Sam never had the intention of being anything but a country music singer. He loves pop and R&B music like other artists and people of the same generation but that wasn't what he wanted to record (at least as specific genres). Also, he once was turned down by nearly label in town (including BMLG) when he had a 'me too' image and sound. Only when he, Zach Crowell and Shane McAnally honed in on the sound we hear from him now did everything click and he went with the look he has now (getting a manager who saw his potential to do something different didn't hurt either). He seems to be quite comfortable in the country genre. He has to actually release a country music song before he makes that assertion. ;) kw9461 , I heart you.

This is my least favorite of the three singles so far, but honestly, that's a minor quibble as I love the entire album and listen to it so much as it is.
I hope there are more singles after this, Break Up in a Small Town needs to be a single, as does Single For the Summer.

"House Party" is among the songs on Montevallo that charms me -- there's a genuine sense of fun & spontaneity to it that I've never gotten from the formulaic party songs that overran country radio during "bro country"'s reign. I also think that Sam Hunt sings with a cute playfulness here that's reflected in the video. Well, at least as long as I don't think about what a thirty year old is doing partying with a bunch of college kids...
Anyway, I have to add that I don't understand how releasing this would be in any way a concession or a response to those who don't find his music to be country. Was the slightly distorted acoustic guitar supposed to persuade me of this song's country-ness? Because it doesn't. But again, country radio is barely interested in country music, so Sam Hunt's music hasn't had to be or sound remotely country for him to be the hottest new artist on country radio.

If these guys wanna make songs that are CLEARLY not country (no matter what any of their promotion teams or "buddies" tell us) then they should find the appropriate genre instead of using this one. I just wish they had the stones to release it correctly, but I'm assuming they know it would be much easier (as you said) to find quick success in this volatile quick-changing genre.

Exactly, it's why I give Taylor Swift credit, she didn't want to lie to her fans about what she was doing with her music, so she switched to pop. These guys (like Sam, and Thomas Rhett who is so blatantly trying to be the Bruno Mars of country which is so frickin' laughable) don't have the power to compete over there nor do they even have the decency to admit that their music isn't country. I remember reading an article one time that Dallas Smith was raised on, pretty much, strictly rock, southern rock, you get it. He only came to the country genre because it was "open to so many new sounds". This is probably secretly the mindset of a lot of these new guys. I'm tired of country being the recycle bin for people who can't make it in other genres and i'm sick of people who try to defend themselves saying that they are country. If you actually have to defend your song saying that it IS in fact "country", then let me tell you it probably isn't. You don't see other genres trying to be something else, they know what and who they are and are happy with it.

I agree about the Opry performance. While I didn't find the actual performance "bad" per se , it just seems so damned disrespectful. I thought the same thing , when I seen Florida Georgia Line booked last week. The Opry used to mean something to the artists that played there. It stood for something. Pete Fisher is absolutely destroying an institution and its sad.

Yeah, I think calling Sam Hunt a "country artist" would be like calling Miranda Lambert a rapper/hip-hop artist.
Having said that, I do enjoy this song even if it's on the wrong format. I definitely expect "Break Up In a Small Town" to be the 4th single (they seem to be releasing the singles in order of the album's track listing).
Edit: I just saw the track listing and realized "Take Your Time" actually comes before "Leave the Night On" (track 1 and 2, respectively). I still expect "Break Up In a Small Town" to be the next single though.

WBEE put this up as their "Music Meeting Song of the Day", so I fully expect official word about this single's release by Monday, either on Play MPe or in Country Aircheck.

Was "Raised On It" ever technically a single? That's my fave!!! It was a Sirius/XM only single in late 2013/early 2014. It wasn't released to terrestrial radio.

I like this. Quite infectious. It's my favorite of his three singles and is actually the one where I don't have as much objection to it being played on country radio. I do think they could have "countried" it up even more though, particularly by lessoning the distortion (?) on his voice and letting it sound more natural.

Does anyone know why this Taste of Country site is so egregiously late with these stories? I don't at all blame you for posting it - it's a new article on a popular site - but this achievement was actually announced via press release on April 17.

The only thing I can tell you is that in the Take Your Time thread, rsmatto announced that Montevallo went gold while I posted that Take Your Time went platinum. Rsmatto linked his own story stating that Sam Hunt went gold faster than any new artist since Florida Georgia Line.

damn I wanted "breakup in a small town" l You may get your wish. Sam said in a recent interview that he's looking forward to making the music video for "Break Up In A Small Town" next (after "House Party" is done). The song's already sold 350k with no airplay. It might be a gold record before it goes for radio adds. Can't wait for the chart slayage once it's officially released!

I'm definitely thinking "House Party" will be pulling in a lot of adds the next two weeks. MCA is taking a slow approach for this song's release since it's coming on the heels of a pretty big hit in "Take Your Time." It got 15 adds this past week, bringing its total to 35 monitored stations on the MB panel.

I saw him last summer with Hunter Hayes when "Leave The Night On" was just starting to take off and he wasn't very well known at all. He was a great performer, and this was one of the songs that stuck out during his performance. Really glad this is the new single. It should be absolutely massive this summer.
Despite not liking "Take Your Time," I think I am on the verge of stanning for him. His looks don't hurt, either.

17 adds this week for "House Party", bringing its total to 52 monitored stations. This one already cracked the top 50 on both charts and it will be on nearly half of the monitored stations (MB) by the time it officially goes for adds on June 1st.

Big jump into the top 40 tonight, moving 42-34* despite getting passed by the two big debuts. I can see this being a leading candidate for 'song of the summer'.

"House Party", "Sangria" and "Kick The Dust Up" look to be the 3 main contenders for song of the summer IMO. Blake's will be peaking earlier than the other two, but I'd expect it will get some strong recurrent play throughout the summer. I suppose "I'm Coming Over" and "Real Life" could be dark horse candidates too.

"House Party" is just fun and relatively unoffensive. I like it, but it's a very safe choice and doesn't really bring anything new to the table melodically or lyrically. I like Sam's style and it's very distinctive. This one doesn't really have that unique quality, but it's still a nice enough listen.

Meh to be honest while this song should be a massive hit I find the chorus too be a little way too overproduced for me but I don't mind him with this song it's good forgetful summer filter.

Doubt it will matter, but this is the first of Sam Hunt's three major country radio singles to fare poorly in the Mediabase callout report. While Leave the Night On and Take Your Time received sizzling hot responses from that survey panel, House Party has one of the format's lowest net positive scores.
With a familiarity of 81%, this song is right now in a bottom group with She Don't Love You and a handful of female country songs.
