Knew this would be their first not to smash since pre-MLJ. Lol, you said the same thing about Sugar. You're SO good at this. Edit: I also like how you have to say "not to smash" instead of "flop", because this "garbage" is still a top 10 hit on two formats. Also still has 2 versions in the top 100 on iTunes...3 versions in the top 200.

Just out of curiosity, how many self-proclaimed M5 fans here liked this? when the song came out I noticed that people who aren't normally into M5 were admitting they were into this, while the fans seemed mostly indifferent to it or just plain disliked it. My perception there might be wrong though...I just get the feeling that they are one of those acts that are actually better off always catering solely to their fans instead of trying to shortcut it and make a song 'for radio,' because they have enough fans that the radio part will happen naturally regardless.
I usually love M5 but I wasn't feeling this. It's filler music and they've done better. They might call this era done, but it's not too late for them to throw out something else if they want *cough*itwasalwaysyou*cough*

I just get the feeling that they are one of those acts that are actually better off always catering solely to their fans instead of trying to shortcut it and make a song 'for radio,' Compared to Overexposed and V, Hands All Over was a much more old school, less electronic album in the vein of Songs About Jane and It Won't Be Soon Before Long. (Misery and This Love were basically separated at birth.) Yet, Hands All Over wasn't very successful. But, then Moves Like Jagger happened. Then Overexposed happened. And, then V. They're better off just doing whatever the heck they feel like, rather than catering to anyone in particular. It was a good thing that they took their musical style and upgraded it to fit the current musical landscape (though it still sounds very "Maroon 5-ish"). If they had listened to those "hardcore fans" who only wanted SAJ2, SAJ3, SAJ4, etc. Maroon 5 would be long dead.

Just out of curiosity, how many self-proclaimed M5 fans here liked this? I'm a fan (my preferences are Songs About Jane and usually the funk-inspired album cuts, e.g. "I Can't Lie" and "Give A Little More," but I don't really dislike any of their material except when it's ultra-repetitive and is on the radio all the time) - I liked it at first, but it hasn't really grown for me since then (this era, I liked "Animals" and "It Was Always You" right away; "Sugar" was up there too upon the album release). I really like the verses and prechorus; the chorus is a little repetitive and monotonous (I mentioned the two/three-note chorus melody earlier in the thread vs. the more interesting intervals in the verses and scalar prechorus). I still prefer "It Was Always You" to this, and comparing it with its fellow re-release track, I prefer "Moves Like Jagger" over it.

This breaks their 8 consecutive top 10 streak on the BB Hot 100 with a peak of 23 thus far. This isn't one of my favorites; I actually everything but the chorus but that never quite grew on me. It's still a moderate in the end, but its performance is underwhelming given their hot streak. I'm curious to see what happens next. This will probably mark the end of the era.

I also maintain the radio edit is better than the explicit, which is rare.

This is going to fall hard. I think the bullet will be below -3000 at some points. Easily their worst song to date.

The full deluxe album "V" actually moved back into the top 50 on iTunes recently. Considering how it's 15 bucks, when most things in the top 50 are much cheaper, that's pretty cool. It's actually tied with Mumford and Sons for the most expensive album in the top 50.

I've been impressed by that too, although it should be mentioned that by this point it's carrying 3 solid hits, and an additional single as well. Another song also got a Grammy performance too. The performance overall has been very good. Some may argue that their albums don't match their radio success, but this has actually had a very strong run and by far their longest run in the top 10 overall.

I don't think this song is THAT bad. I am surprised how radio didn't give it a free pass just because it's M5. Not to mention this song was MADE for the summer. I guess carrying Daylight and Love Somebody to #1 with horrible sales was enough. I too think they will end the era after this, even though It Was Always You and even Unkiss Me would work as singles.

Did those songs really have horrible sales though? I thought they both sold 2 million+ or around that mark which seems pretty good to me for the 3rd and 4th singles off a popular album. Like, maybe not great sales, but enough that I wouldn't call radio playing them as a "free pass" This wasn't a complete disaster, but it is weird to see M5 not have a smash especially with a song that seemed particularly crafted for summer pop radio. It never quite grew on me though. Like, it wasn't as catchy as it should have been?

I think this is easily the worst single they've ever released, even worse than the middle-of-the-road AC singles that catch grief on here. I've historically enjoyed Maroon 5, but they've tested my patience this era and I'm glad the terrible lyrics and contrived "edginess" caught up with them. Hope their next album is a bit more inspired.

I've always said that lyrics don't matter as much as the beat and melody as long as they are hot, but this is one instance in which I'll have an egg on my face. The lyrics are atrocious. Makes Roar seem like a lyrical masterpiece. I really think that's the main problem, as the beat is hot. Sugar is such a better summer song, especially with so many weak contenders right now.

Agreed on this song burned very quickly.Haven't listened to this since first week of release. "Maps" and "Animals" were the best singles this era. They have had worse although like "Love Somebody" which was terrible.

I still like it but dont bring myself to listen to it anymore. Animals is the only highlight of this era. Sugar I cant stand at all, worst single this era imo

I got the impression that this was huge and well on its way to be another #1 for them, but it might just be my local pop station playing it to death.
Anyway, it's a shame because I love it mostly because it sounds nothing like them. I think they're decent generally, but this kind of production and Adam Levine not singing in his typical tone was a nice change of pace, especially with the production which kind of reminds me of a less polished "Style"

I think by next week we'll start seeing a quadruple digit negative bullet. Heck, "Bright" by Echosmith is doing so and that song was decent. Whoever said -3000...yeah probably in two weeks. This thing will be off the chart by August.
