Top 10 in two formats...the single is top 40 on iTunes...the regular and deluxe albums are both in the top 100 on iTunes. It didn't smash like their last, oh EIGHT CONSECUTIVE SINGLES or so, but...it still did well, as fourth singles go. The streak was already pretty ridiculous, so I'm not surprised it had to end eventually.
As much as I like IWAY, I don't know how it would have done. I understand why they might have wanted to go with something different...Animals and IWAY have a similar beat/sound. If they do eventually release it, maybe it was good to have a two song buffer.

Well...4th* single, but really, 1st single from a re-release/a brand-new recording, which is why it's especially surprising that THIS was the one to end their streak (Hot 100-wise, anyway, since you'd expect at brand-new song from such a hot act to sell much better than this did.)
Though its terrible streaming (No. 44 peak on Streaming Songs, currently No. 50) is even more surprising than its underwhelming sales, especially with such a buzzed-about video. I know it had a warning, but that minor barrier alone can't be to blame for such poor streaming numbers. Is this not on Spotify or something?

Well, it didn't just get a warning. It got a warning, then it got removed, then it got reuploaded on a different channel. So, whatever buzz it had at the beginning was kind of wasted.
The way youtube works, a video's debut really sets the tone of its future trajectory. The more views and buzz a video gets in the beginning, the better it will perform in terms of search results, video suggestions, etc.
And, if a video has mature content (sometimes even if it's not officially flagged), a video will not show up as a suggested video. Being a suggested video on the side of the screen is the largest source of a successful video's hit count.
I mean, it's not like the video (any version of it) had a huge number of dislikes or anything.

The streak had to end eventually but that it ended with this song is surprising considering their last single was much more generic and it went to the top of Pop and the Hot 100 Top 10 with ease, plus it was the third single from an album released a few months prior to its release. What makes this song surprising is that it was a brand new track, recorded and released with summer in mind, and imo much more fresh sounding than their last few singles, though that one can be disputed. I don't think anything with them as actually changed as far as popularity goes so it seems strange to have single after single do predictably well only to have this one suddenly not. Had Animals and/or Sugar peaked even slightly lower than they did, it would make sense, but they both did really well and so effortlessly and this song didn't.
Personally, I liked the song. Cynthia asked a few pages back about what fans of the group felt and I considered myself a fan of them for the first few albums. I drifted away by the third album but still check for them anyway, I'm just not as invested in them. I feel like This Summer's Gonna Hurt is probably the song that sounds least like them as a group but it doesn't generic to me and still has personality so it sticks out in a good way compared to most of their post-MLJ singles.
I'm also hoping for It Was Always You or nothing. I heard it in the GAP last week and it sounded so nice.

I think the main issue with this song's performance was the use of "motherfucker". I have no problem with swearing in a song, especially if it's used cleverly, but it just doesn't work with this song as a single. Pop radio is something listened to by families, so you can't just curse on the radio because children will want to sing along, and the chorus for this revolves around that word. It's a pretty unconventional chorus as it is, but with the swearing, it becomes even more polarizing. With other hit songs where the word "fuck" was in the title, there was always a clean version that hid it and made it family friendly ("F**k You" became "Forget You", "Tonight (I'm F**kin' You)" became "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)", "F**kin' Perfect" became "Perfect"). All of those clean versions made changes that worked in context. With this, they just yell "This summer's gonna hurt like a mother ah-ah, ah-ah", and it just sounds kinda silly and stupid. My friends make fun of it actually. It's a good song, but that kinda drags it down as a radio single.
Additionally, the clean version on iTunes still has the word "MotherF**ker" in the title, and I'm sure that's a turn off for a lot of people. For all of those other songs, the clean version ended up selling better while they were radio hits, but the title of the clean version of this probably drove some people away, and the explicit version never caught on enough. Not to mention the fact that both versions appearing separatly on iTunes causes less exposure at the top of the iTunes charts.
I just think the word "motherfucker" shot them in the foot here.

I dunno, normally I wouldn't disagree but the radio edit replaced it with "huh huh", which I thought worked. (AT40's edit sucked though. It just cut out the entire line and left it as "This summer's gonna hurt" and it was just awkward). I do think they should have kept the title as This Summer's Gonna Hurt though.

I dunno, normally I wouldn't disagree but the radio edit replaced it with "huh huh", which I thought worked. The problem with that is that everyone knows what "mother-ah-hah" means, even if they've never heard the song before. If someone were to hear "Forget You" for the first time, it'd be hard to tell that the original version was indeed called F uck You, because the clean version doesn't make it obvious that it's a clean version. Same goes for "FF uckin Perfect" and "Tonight I'm F ucking You". With no exposure to the explicit version, the censorship comes off as smooth and well-executed. The problem with "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf ucker" is that "this summer's going to hurt like a mother-ah-hah" is not smooth or well executed because no matter what, everyone knows that they're trying to say "motherf ucker", and they know that it was censored from "motherf ucker".

That's true but I have heard "like a mother" as a saying in itself before. It's obvious what it implies, of course, but it has become a saying in and of itself.

This weekend on our local Top 40 station in Boston Kiss 108 when you hear 2 Maroon 5 songs in a row you win $1000. They did the promotion ad with this song but I'm not sure if this is the only Maroon 5 song they will use for it.

Bullet is now -3657? Are they getting in Dixie Chicks's "Landslide" territory with this bomb? Makes me laugh so hard every time I see it.

There are a billion other Maroon 5 singles that still get consistent radio play...3 from THIS era alone. This song was a moderate hit, those were huge hits. Why would a moderate hit linger on the chart when there are so many recent M5 smashes that are STILL getting spins and sales? I mean, Sugar is still top 50 on iTunes. It's their 4th single in like 9 months. Radio doesn't NEED this song. In that context, a large drop makes perfect sense. Though, you're right....it is funny in some regards. If I reached the point in my musical career where a top 10 hit on Pop and Hot AC is a "flop", I'd laugh about it, too.

Easy Xykes, no one is saying anything about their accomplishments or this song suffering from a bit of recurrentitis (which I agree with). They went into overkill and got bit in the a** because of it. Look for them to never even perform this live, it's going to be one of those songs where a group will pretend it never happened, and same with radio...I think. This could be the sign of their downfall, and hey, if that's the case, great, it was a pretty nice run for about 10 years. I mean if they push too hard and too quick again, we could see a Nickelback situation on our hands, however, I think Levine is too well liked for something to get that bad.

REO Speedwagon, Bon Jovi, Hootie and the Blowfish, Matchbox 20, Nickelback, and now Maroon 5.

This is further reinstated by the fact that their previous single's longevity has been unaffected by this numbers' performance. The Nickelback comparisons are very weak too, because they're generally not disliked. People either like them or accept their presence.
