BEFORE ANYTHING - can the girl get a damn vocal coach? it is not 2010 anymore people want their divas to be able to actually sing. Gaga, Rihanna, Kesha etc. have all stepped up their vocals. There can usually only be a few talentless huge divas at a time and Selena Gomez has taken her spot right now. If she does a few good folksy performances in between eras and show off some vocal improvement/depth it would definitely generate a lot of goodwill amongst the public, Gaga showed the girls how to use your time off to get the public back on your side so I hope she follows her steps. I honestly use to be the biggest Katy hater on here but seeing her get dragged through the mud last year wasn't fun at all, just sad. Another One of the Boys type of album would be great, it's the only album of hers I really like because it didn't feel too contrived and the lyrics/song themes were quirky and interesting enough for me to bop along too and occasionally giggle. Mmm, this is what makes me wonder what Katy really wants to do with herself. The type of voice she has doesn't really fit the kind of arena-pop hits she's amassed tbh, and I think if she had the ability to make music with no sales pressure hanging over your head she'd likely wander in a very different direction. I still cling to her old Electric Feels and Black and Gold covers; that is where her voice suits her best. But could she have radio and streaming success in that lane? I dunno. I completely forgot about those covers!! yeah back then I use to actually think Katy had a pretty good voice. I remember her talking about how much Alanis influenced her and I think if she had the choice she would be doing that kind of pop/rock stuff. What's funny is I could see Katy being totally happy having the sound that Kelly Clarkson had for the majority of her career (a sound Kelly F**kiing hated having to conform to) with more cutting lyrics. But this is just what I think lol I think it's a good point that you're bringing up that none of us have any idea what she really wants to be doing musically (a problem that now that I come to think of it, I feel Taylor Swift shares with her latest release). Even if Katy doesn't ever come close to being a A-list diva again it be nice to see her set into a respectable path with some goodwill from the public.

Even if Katy doesn't ever come close to being a A-list diva again it be nice to see her set into a respectable path with some goodwill from the public. First off, you must’ve never seen Katy in concert. I saw her last two concerts and her vocals were on point. As much as I dislike Save As Draft, she sounded amazing!! She may not be Gaga but she still has great vocals. Second, that 2000’s Kelly sound is dated. The pop rock sound from OOTB is the closest to Kelly’s old sound and it would not work at all in 2018. Katy needs to evolve with pop music if she wants to try for chart success again. Katy is a singles artist and is best known for her radio friendly hooks. Drifting away from that to a more experimental album didn’t work for her (Witness). It all comes down to what route Katy wants to take.

I still think Katy can come back. There was (in my opinion) huge hype before Witness, and even for a few weeks into Chained To The Rhythm’s run. I’m not blaming the haircut but when that happened and the Bon Appetit cover art came out (which had Migos instead of Ariana), the era effectively died. With the terrible handling of singles, image and promo following Chained To The Rhythm, I would have been more surprised if it had been a success (and even at that, it was #1, she had a top five hit, Feels and Bon Appetit’s video was big).
I think what this album lacked outside of a proper image was catchiness. Chained To The Rhythm was catchy but it was a bit jarring. Nothing else outside of Roulette and maybe Witness was objectively (as objective as music can be) catchy. That was something her last hits all had - a chorus you could sing along to and dance to easily. Bon Appetit and Swish Swish were the exact opposite of that, Hey Hey Hey is way too jarring and wasn’t going to be a hit that late. She did a lot of soul searching this era and I hope with her next era she comes back with a consistent image for the era. I obviously want her to stick to the sound of Chained To The Rhythm and her other songs, but if she doesn’t want to that’s fine, as long as she sticks to it. Also - GET BONNIE ON THE PHONE! Her, Bonnie and Max could come back with a smash. I would also love to see a collab between her, Taylor, Gaga and Rihanna. Maybe throw Ariana in as well

When was the last time Bonnie wrote something good? Someone reliable implied another collaboration with Calvin could be coming so I hope that is true.

She’s not horrible right now, but she does have a lot of potential. She’s in the same both with Rihanna in terms of vocals although the latter has been more consistent as in live performances. Songs like “thinking of you”, “Firework”, “The one that got away (acoustic)” , “Roar”, “Unconditionally” and “Save as Draft” shows that she has the potential.

just for god's sake, do NOT come back and try to do what Taylor is attempting, and that's trying to appeal to the Rhythmic market and be all hip-hop and stuff. No Katy rapping please.

Some of Katy's best songs are the urban leaning ones like "Dark Horse," "E.T.," and "Tsunami." She doesn't half ass it or just try to put an urban twist on it, if she wants to make an urban record she just makes one. Some time ago @antigonerising noted how she uses more vocal restraint on those urban records and she sounds really good, and I agree with that. "Bon Appetit" would have been in an entirely different league of hot mess if she went all in on those vocals.

Shocked no one posted this yet Katy Perry Addresses Career Dip: “It’s About Killing My Ego”
Katy Perry has always been quite outspoken on a range of topics – and it turns out that extends to the state of her career. Well documented is the dismal dip that derailed her once-unstoppable train of success. And, in doing away with the “pretend it never happened” approach most Pop stars opt for, Perry has revealed that she’s more than aware of her predicament following the commercial tanking of her ‘Witness’ album. Here’s what she had to say when speaking on her current status in an interview with Glamour magazine: Humble Queen Read more: thatgrapejuice.net/2018/02/katy-perry-addresses-career-dip-killing-ego/#ixzz56Mx2GRyO

I understand where the market and trend is. I guess I shouldn’t have been so broad. Yes to “features” as others above have pointed out. No new album is needed right now. But let’s not forget that “Feels” was a UK #1 and a Top 10 on Pop for her. That’s exactly the type of projects she needs to be on. I would give Zedd a call.

I'm on board with a return of her late 2000s pop/rock sound. Dated or not, if that style somehow made a comeback with a modern twist, I'd be on the moon. While I like a lot of her last 2/3 albums, I do think she sounds her best doing a more edgier pop with a rock influence.

While I overall enjoyed the album, I didn't like how all of the singles were released before the album was released. I understand promotional singles but these were actual singles.

I knew I was right to start stanning for her during her flop era. I haven't played Witness in a couple weeks. It's time to get back into it. She seems like such a fundamentally good person, so she deserves to win.

Maybe backlash isn't the best word but there was definitely a disconnect that occurred after she dropped CTTR and started off with the whole "conscious pop" angle only to pivot 180 with BA and SS.

Maybe backlash isn't the best word but there was definitely a disconnect that occurred after she dropped CTTR and started off with the whole "conscious pop" angle only to pivot 180 with BA and SS. Right, going to BA & SS after CTTR did mediocre certainly seemed like the label didn't expect the lead single to not live up to the hype, so they instead of pushing another of the more "purposeful pop" songs as a single, they went with something they thought was safer, and it just seemed like Katy wasn't that into them. Makes me wonder how those two even ended up on the album, because they really don't fit sonically with the rest of the project
