I can't believe people are writing Katy off. You don't sell millions of albums and score 9 #1 singles (5 of which was from ONE album), headline the highest rated halftime show, and disappear. People need to realize every pop star has a decline period and what separates a legend from an icon is the ability to bounce back. It's far too early to write her off based on 1 album cycle. She's achieved more than any pop star her generation and her core fans still show up for her. Says the person with the Christina Aguilera avatar.

Says the person with the Christina Aguilera avatar. What does Christina have to do with anything? She's already a legend so... My point being that Christina was HUGE. And then she wasn't (as for her being a legend, well, I'll have whatever you're drinking). Having a massive amount of success in a short period of time does not mean you're going to have longterm success. And I just listed a bunch of artists that had massive success in a short period of time and then guess what... didn't. It happens all the time.

Truth time: Katy will be remembered for some big hit singles and that’s about it. Even Teenage Dream is about the glossy hits.

I mean, this is only my prediction and opinion, she may slay the world with her next era for all I know. And I'll be rooting her on. But looking at the careers of a lot of huge short-lived pop stars over the years, she fits way too easily into that category. I don't think she's a dynamic artist and I don't think she holds enough weight in the public consciousness to truly come back big.

I definitely agree. Katy is not be written off yet. Chained To The Rhythm had no longevity but it did extremely well at first, it was one of her highest debuting songs. Bon Appetit and Swish Swish were never going to be hits. And people currently don’t like her image, whether you want to blame her haircut or the weird way she is acting or whatever. But that can easily change. If she comes back with more strong material and fixes her image, she will be fine. The goofy thing worked for her before, Last Friday Night comes to mind. Either she just give up the goofy thing or she become less cringey goofey, but I think she will be fine. She had such a good image and hype going into this era but it all went down hill when the Bon Appetit single cover was released

Can anyone really argue that it wasn't the material that killed this era? I can see the argument for CTTR being a great song, it is, but the political theme hurt it. Every other song from "Rise" until today just wasn't up to her old standards. She can recover, with the right material.
I mean, as "toxic" as she was, Feels was still a big WW hit (even if the US still relatively paid it dust). It was the right song at the right time (summer).

^Id say it was a perfect storm of a bunch of things
Yes the Material. 2017 in general though wasn’t a big year for women in music sales outside of Taylor (and pink). And while I personally have no problem with the haircut I don’t think it turned others off regardless if it SHOULD have or not

Katy also got a lot of backlash for several performances this era. Her SNL performance was ripped apart bc of the drama with drag queens and Migos, and there was that video of Jlo and Madonna cringing at her live performance somewhere else. She just couldn't pull off Bon Appetit or Swish Swish live to save her life -- which, tbh, is very similar to Taylor's new era.

Audiences just aren't invested in Katy, but moreso her hits: when she doesn't have them, she doesn't sell. What happened with Witness was simple, she didn't deliver quality material. "Chained To The Rhythm" was the best of the era and when compared to the rest of the album shines, but still pales in comparison to a slew of her prior singles. Her making a comeback could be as simple as a really strong song, but she can't afford another long break between cycles. That'll be the nail.

The right material will bring her back on track, and more Capitol holding the reigns.

I think her next song should be a bit more serious, between Teenage Dream and Chained To The Rhythm. And the chorus needs to be catchy. Get Bonnie on the phone

I LOVE Chained to the Rhythm -- one of my favorites songs of hers ever. And i LOATHED Bon Appetit -- just killed the era for me (although I kinda like the instrumental i just can't get past the lyrics). Anyway, I think Katy's next few years may follow the same path as Britney since Hold it Against me. I think Katy will come back with a really big hit or 2 or 3 (like Brit with HIAM and TTWE). While she will never have another album era like TD - that just a once in a career type of album - she will probably have a successful album again. Future albums will bring diminished returns both in terms of sales and hit singles, but she will continue to create music her fans will enjoy. At some point I absolutely see her doing a Vegas residency -- she has the hits, her live shows are big and colorful and entertaining. Perfect for a residency. And then she will continue to tour well on her legacy of hits. She will probably do a little more dabbling in acting as well. Future looks bright to me...no one cranks out radio hits forever

Smh at people writing Katy off after one bad era. It’s 100% possible to bounce back with the right material. Britney, Pink, Kelly, and to a lesser extent Gaga all bounced back after disappointing eras. Katy has 9 #1’s, three diamond singles, and 4 music videos with over 1 billion views and this was all in a span of less than a decade. She is still the most followed person on Twitter and she just received a massive payout to be on Idol. Yeah, she may not be what she once was, and she’s not having another TD era, but she can definitely bounce back with another successful era with some Top 10 hits. It really just comes down to having the right material and some good promo. But I will say that her next era is do or die.

With the exception of Pink, none of those artists you listed bounced back to their peaks though, which is the point. I don't think anyone is saying she's a Hot 100 bubbling under artist from here on out, but thinking that Katy Perry can just shrug this flop off and return to dominating form just isn't paying attention to history. Could she buck the trend? Sure, but I wouldn't put money on it. Especially considering I don't think Katy has endeared herself to the public nearly as much as those four have/had.

I don't think anyone is realistically writing her off, but as you say, next era is do or die. She was lucky to get that Idol payout before BA bombed and killed the era. Ditch Max Martin and keep Sia at a minimum. Go for a new sound, work with new people, dial back the goofy image that has gotten old...

Katy’s peak was Teenage Dream and I don’t see her ever reaching the peak again, regardless of her popularity. That’s a once in a career era. I’m not expecting some #1 debut or anything but I can see her getting 2 or 3 decent hits with at least one of them going Top 10. She just needs the right material. And with Capitol having the most to lose financially from another bad era, they’re gonna have Katy on a tight rope next era. I still believe Katy has one more era to redeem herself.

The good thing that Katy had going for her career is that she's always been more GP-based and less stan-heavy like artists like Gaga/Britney where her appeal is a lot broader than theirs but it's also been more casual. All she needed was the right song since her image was always pretty safe/vanilla. The bad thing about that is that because her fanbase isn't as secured/dedicated as the others, any sort of shift/polarization throws everything off. It sounds very superficial to say and it's sad, but I really think her haircut has a lot of to do with why this era failed. Plus the fact that she joined the political arena last year and parlayed that (though with subtlety) into the first single.
For whatever reason, the GP just doesn't like their popstars having a political voice. T Swift has gotten a lot of flack for her silence but I don't blame her at all. Her team knows.

I don't feel like this album is by any means a stepdown from Prism in terms of quality. They are both B+ level pop album with some A+ level cuts. The first five songs of Witness is perfectly what a pop record by top artist should sound like in 2017, and CTTR/BA are made for topping the charts.
To me the issues here are the incoherence between the image of her trying to break new grounds that they wanna push (her haircut, live-streaming, awkward videos) and the fact that they are playing the safe cards with her music. The mismatch makes Katy HERSELF, above anything else, less confident in what she's doing. And GP can certainly feel: something just ain't right.

I'd say Katy's best bet at staging a comeback is to sit in the background and do collaborations on other songs. Sing/write hooks for others, be a featured artist, stand outside the spotlight. Get her name on other hits, then take some time away after a few of those to do a new era of her own.

No to time away. Yes to collaborations. I'd like for her to cop one before her tour ends at least.

Tomorrow is her last show of the North American leg of Witness The Tour. Katy has a month off until she heads to South America. Hopefully she finds some time to get into the studio for a collaboration that can be released this year. Her best bet would be collaborating with one of the hot EDM acts of now or sing the hook on a rap collaboration. I just hope too much of her time doesn’t get taken up by Idol promotions since that premieres in about a month.

Technically I agree with Katy doing some collaborations, but more so I just want her to figure out what she wants and collabs are simply a convenient 'out' to stay in the public eye without having to fully commit herself to heavy promo or a comeback attempt until she's sorted herself out. She might be ready to leave the popstar grind behind her even if that also means leaving behind her days of commercial viability forever. Or maybe she does want to make a glorious return to the top, in which case she needs to come to terms with a lot of things about her strengths and weaknesses as an artist before stepping into the studio for KP5. For some reason I get the feeling she ended the Witness era with more inner confusion than clarity, and I want her to find that.

BEFORE ANYTHING - can the girl get a damn vocal coach? it is not 2010 anymore people want their divas to be able to actually sing. Gaga, Rihanna, Kesha etc. have all stepped up their vocals. There can usually only be a few talentless huge divas at a time and Selena Gomez has taken her spot right now.
If she does a few good folksy performances in between eras and show off some vocal improvement/depth it would definitely generate a lot of goodwill amongst the public, Gaga showed the girls how to use your time off to get the public back on your side so I hope she follows her steps. I honestly use to be the biggest Katy hater on here but seeing her get dragged through the mud last year wasn't fun at all, just sad. Another One of the Boys type of album would be great, it's the only album of hers I really like because it didn't feel too contrived and the lyrics/song themes were quirky and interesting enough for me to bop along too and occasionally giggle.

I don't know if there is anything she or any other members of the pop "establishment" can do to get back on top. The GP's desire for something new all the time has hyper-accelerated.

Mmm, this is what makes me wonder what Katy really wants to do with herself. The type of voice she has doesn't really fit the kind of arena-pop hits she's amassed tbh, and I think if she had the ability to make music with no sales pressure hanging over your head she'd likely wander in a very different direction. I still cling to her old Electric Feels and Black and Gold covers; that is where her voice suits her best. But could she have radio and streaming success in that lane? I dunno.
