After 251 days in the MB Top 50 it looks like "Nights On Fire" will finally crack the Top 20. I don't think this song can last a whole lot longer since this week will mark week 40 for BB and it's just now in the Top 20. With a lot of songs below David Nail that are probably going to start gaining on him and pass him (FGL, Sam Hunt, Zac Brown Band) then you have songs that are a lot younger that can also catch "Night's On Fire" (possibly Justin Moore, Dan + Shay probably will soon, and even Kip Moore could get ahead of David Nail). With how long it took to hit the Top 20 I doubt "Nights On Fire" will last much longer. It can probably last longer. With Top 20 placement it'll get late adds that it's still missing and will get more airplay and more countdowns. The song can hold on for a Top 10. Why not follow a Love Like Crazy path at this point. What do they have to lose?

Also what do they have to lose? I don't know money, waste of promotion, this song helping the chart clog that is happening right now cause it won't die so other songs that have more hit potential probably won't now because this won't die. If they don't release an album they won't get any money back. Also what other syndicated countdowns are there. There's CCUSA, American Country Countdown, and Bob Kingsley Country Top 40 but I think that's it. This song has sold decent enough but it's really not moving the needle all that much.

The same could all be said about a plethora of songs - ala Chase Bryant - but without an album officially scheduled, why not try to get the song up the charts more. The label is invested in David, the better a single does on the charts, the more chance he has to tour and give the label back some $$.

I hate being reminded of how long that song spent on the chart especially since a bigger hit song like "I Got The Boy" should have been a Top 3 not that mediocre at best seller. Why doesn't the label schedule an album release so fans can get some new music from David Nail since it's been two and a half years now and that'll get some money back too since David Nail is more than ready with new music and there's a Top 20 to his name. Also no sh!t the label is invested David Nail if they weren't invested they wouldn't try anymore and he would've been dropped but he's not. Finally, can you please explain to me when a song is in general losing money for the label why in the (expletive) is it smart to keep promoting it. That'd be like if a company kept sponsoring a product that wasn't gaining them any money but was instead hurting business.

It's entirely possible they're not. The song has sold 118k. That's $152k+ before royalties and iTunes $$ taken out. The promoter's wages are spread out over the entire MCA label so that success of acts like Sam Hunt, etc. can absorb cost for calls about Nail. Add in revenue from Merch and concerts and they're more than likely breaking even at this point and even if they weren't on this track, they're most definitely able to afford the costs to promote the slower moving songs for a long time.

Let's be real here Sam Hunt is the only one on MCA that is doing well, George Strait took forever to get his album released, Josh Turner's got delayed indefinitely, Kip Moore's album got delayed. Vince Gill finally released an album after a long time and Clare Dunn is well certainly not going to release an album anytime soon. David Nail well for some reason can't get his album released when there's a Top 20 and plenty of new material too release. If hypothetically speaking they are breaking even why not then make at least a little bit of a profit and release the album already. Then it's a profit and this single will actually be worth something. I rest my case I'm done. Just it's not worth going back and forth about, I have my view points you have yours.

Because they have release schedules and things lined up for that. The MCA label is part of the whole UMG group, not JUST MCA. They can absorb delays on the roster at this moment. They also could be re-working the project. The label has the time to make it right. If you were arguing this about Chase Bryant (who is now two hits in without a full album), I could see it. But David's not on the second single w/o an album scheduled. He's still on the first. I suspect we'll hear a release date for it soon and like the Canaan song, this one's more tempo and will do better in the summer months than it has already.

If I was Radio PD I'd be pretty pissed off if I supported an act that released a song that was mildly successful and no album but that's just me I guess. I have my opinions you have yours I'm done, you have your viewpoints on stuff and honestly you're not going to change my mind on the fact that this song is taking up chart space (IMO). This song and Canaan staying on the chart ar just going to slow down the chart and make songs that should be hit singles not at all. Your not changing my mind I'm not changing yours sp I'm out.

raylatch98, You're overthinking the whole situation. Most radio PDs are told what to play. As if they really had a choice in the whole matter.

I really don't think Matt needs to explain that any more clearly. An artist like David always has slower chart climbs, but now that this is top 20, the label has significantly less incentive to stop pushing it - quite the opposite, they have more incentive. This is when they can plan the album release, etc. So just because YOU think this song is taking up space, the label clearly does not agree. And maybe, just maybe, we can concede that Matt, who lives in Nashville and has one of the more prominent blogs in the industry, knows just a bit more about how this all works and let. it. go.

Every song that last more than 25 weeks on the chart gets the same treatment on this board. "Taking up space", "losing money", etc. Of course the song is taking up space. Space that it is has earned (or that someone has paid for). As for losing money, some folks here act like these people are losing their own personal savings account. The people on this thread represent .0001 of the radio listening public. While most posters here are right on the money on things a majority of the time, 99.9% of the people have no idea how long a song has charted, they just know they like it or don't. I know that everything I just stated is pretty much why this board exist but it gets old. The Chase Bryant thread was a spectacular read. I am sure everyone here knows this, but there are reasons why things happen the way they do in music. It goes much deeper than the surface. Sometimes we may think they are really stupid, sometimes they are brilliant.
As for PDs....a majority are robots. They spit out what they are fed. The station I worked for got their Playlist from a California consultant.....I live in Alabama.
As for this song, it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it broke a record for weeks on the chart. I personally love the song and can't wait for an album release date.

I think I get more annoyed when a song hits number 1 in 15 to 20 weeks or even less. I enjoy the ride when songs put in their time earn their way to the top. I hope "NOF" goes top 10 or even top 5 I love David Nail and am pulling for him.

I like this one quite a bit, but I'm having a hard time seeing this as a big hit. It's a likable song, it just doesn't have the X factor in my opinion.
I do like how long this has been steadily rising up the charts. I know most people hate when songs take their time, but I always root for them (ex. "First" by Cold War Kids on Alternative radio).

Freaked out when 4 of the first 5 songs, David didn't have a hand in writing. Glad the rest of the album are written partly or all by him.

This song is growing on me. I still think it's a Dan + Shay knockoff, but I like it more.
Also, I think I'm discovering one of the elements that makes Frank Liddell's production so messy. He doesn't let things ring out and decay. Normally, things like guitar strums or snare drum beats have a sound wave that looks like a greater-than sign, a louder noise fading away gradually. But the snare beats on this, and many of the guitar chords, are cut off before that "decay" begins. It's especially noticeable on the four snare beats before the chorus kicks in. And I think it's also why his guitar solos always sound so tinny and claustrophobic, because he's compressing everything so much and not letting the notes get sustained.

This song is growing on me. It's growing on me as well which is interesting because this song came out nearly a year ago. I've always been kind of meh about this song. Didn't hate it by any means but wasn't head over heels (or should I say boots :) ) for it. Lately I've really been enjoying this one a lot. It's the perfect song to roll the windows down and jam to. This song is meant for the summer.

"NOF" looks like it could break the weeks record on the Billboard Airplay chart. I believe the record is Craig Campbell and/or Lee Brice at 54 weeks. That's just off the top of my head, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't see "Night's On Fire" lasting quite long enough to equal either.

How many weeks is this at now? 46. I think it can approach both. Not sure if it'll beat them, but it should be close.

I think it can approach both. Not sure if it'll beat them, but it should be close. My guess is it'll be let go once the album drops in four weeks. Once a song hits 50 weeks, it becomes really really difficult to keep alive. This one has been spun in significant rotation by so many stations for so long. Programmers are really cognizant about that. Label has probably made it known that the album drop date is close and top 10 is in reach. As long as they have some incentive, radio will go along.

I think this can reach the Top 10, but I expect once that happens, the label will let this go.
Right now, David Nail is 4th in line to get in the Top 10 on MB, while he's fifth more than likely on BB. Let's do MB, so Chris Lane will take Tim McGraw's spot, Dan + Shay will be in the Top 10 once Thomas goes recurrent, then Luke Bryan and either Kenny Chesney/Keith Urban fall then that should get David Nail in the Top 10 along with Jake Owen.
I believe that should take about a month to do which will be when the album drops. By then, I think RCA Nashville will stop promoting this, I do think David Nail's Top 10 chances will be diminished if in those 4 weeks Sam Hunt, Dierks Bentley, (he's moving pretty darn fast while David is stagnant) and Kelsea Ballerini. If even one of them passes David, then I think his Top 10 chances are significantly down.

Ok, so the album is coming out in 2 weeks. Which is approximately how much I give this song (maybe 3 weeks at the most) and I am a little bit struggling seeing this hit the Top 10.
"Nights On Fire" has gained approximately 430k in audience since Monday, which compared to the songs around him makes Davids gains not impressive at all (Sam Hunt has gained 680k, Justin Moore approximatley 1920k, and Kelsea Ballerini has gained 1830k) and suggests David gains have really slowed down and radio is about ready to drop this. David Nail is at #14 this week on Billboard and MB as of today. Right now it appears that David is more or less 4th to 6th in line for the Top 10 (depending if Justin Moore stays ahead and if Kelsea Ballerini can pass David).
So this week Dan + Shay is taking Thomas Rhett's (BB) or Tim McGraw's (MB) Top 10 spot. Next week Jake Owen will take Luke Bryans spot. After that Keith Urban will more than likely be the next artist falling starting Monday or Tuesday (Kenny Chesney and Jon Pardi are still wildcards that could fall in those weeks so that might help David Nail) and that will get Sam Hunt into the Top 10. Assuming Kenny and Jon are still gaining three weeks from now (which I think they will be), the next spot open will be when Jason Aldean starts falling on July 11th/12th (after he hits #1 next week more than likely), which would probably means Jason Aldean won't be out of the Top 10 till the end of July. I am not sure I can see David Nail lasting that long and holding off Justin Moore/Kelsea Ballerini within that time frame.
Maybe MCA Nashville slows down Sam Hunt and puts the accelerator on David Nail and make a mini push to the Top 10 within the next two weeks.
