I have heard pop fans call him the Drake of Country Music... I guess by that definition he is expected to be country and stay country.

He writes country songs, which are delivered in an unorthodox manner because he's influenced by several different types of music. At its core, what Sam Hunt does is very country. People just aren't used to the delivery of his songs, and that's fine. But if you look at any of his writing hits or the William Michael Morgan song, when delivered in a way that is conventional, he's very much country. Sorry, but Break Up In A Small Town is NOT a country song in any way shape or manner - lyrically or otherwise. Sam can certainly write a great country song (as evidenced by Cop Car), but this just isn't.

This song has pop beats nothing remotely country in production and the terrible rap or spoken word. I would like this song on pop radio but this is in no way a country song just cause one aspect of the lyrics mention a small town. That's not how it works.

Put some stereotypical country themes into a song with a pop sound and you can call it country. This song in particular explores small towns as southern, redneck, in the middle of nowhere countryside. Yeah, this song sounds nothing like country, nor do the lyrics or the way Sam sing-talks... but it's like "hey, it's small town, gotta be country right?". I come from a small town, except it's in a northern state and in a metropolitan area. Is it country or redneck? No, not at all.

I hope I'm not going very off-topic here but that's a great question... what makes a song country?
This made me remember how the other day I was listening to a cover of "Stay" by Sugarland only with an acoustic guitar (like the original) and without Jennifer's "twang" in the girl's voice, and it sounded like an Adele song LOL (the girl had a similar tone to her voice, that's how I made this crazy connection). Is that song, for example, considered a country/pop crossover kind of song because of it's lack of a distinctive country instrumentation?

What's "Country" is most-determined by what generation you grew up listening to the genre. What is or isn't country has constantly evolved through the years.

I wasn't saying it's country. I won't step into that debate. I was just saying if you read the lyrics like you would be reading a book or a poem, the lyrics to me sound like they're about a country song. A break up, a small town, heartbreak, etc. Most of these topics are universal (save small town) but are much more common in country music.

Just heard this for the first time on country radio yesterday, and I'm sorry but this song is garbage. He's verging on rapping/R&B. I get annoyed as it seems Sam and Thomas Rhett are just determined to make "country" be more pop/R&B leaning.

Can you please refrain from drive by comments like this like updating where it's at on MB. These updates add nothing to the conversation also please edit and don't double post. Just a suggestion ;)

That's the rolling chart; Sam should be #27 on the published chart, which will reflect numbers that will be released later today and this evening in the final updates ("Buy Me A Boat" is officially going recurrent). My father heard this for the first time a few days ago...his jaw literally dropped. He said "I think this has gone too far."

Really liked the video... it is as intense as I though it would be and really matches the song. I could do without the excessive editing in the first half of the video (that got me a bit dizzy lol), but really liked the overall product.

Seems like a video of the year candidate to my eyes. Great job and a great song.

Great video, and I'm liking this more and more with each listen. I always find his spoken verse/singing thing a little off putting at first but then I get into it.

I actually don't like the video. I get what the director was going for with the overall treatment and editing but I just didn't care for it, at all. The blurred effects in the editing was just too much for my taste and I didn't like the basic take they decided to do with the story-line. They burned a house down, which was aesthetically interesting, but that's literally the only redeeming part of this video.

The video was a little jarring, production wise, but I like it. I wish they had done a little more with the storyline, but I think it'll do the job to get the song noticed.

I felt that there was an excessive editing, especially with the blurring of the faces, but other than that, I did like the video. I have to say that this is the first time I've seen what Sam Hunt looked like! Oh my my! But back to the topic - this song is not Country at all and I'm genuinely surprised this is doing relatively well. But I personally really do like this song a lot and I will be rooting for its success anyways, especially when it crosses over! Hopefully, Sam can release something more Countrier next to redeem himself.

Hopefully, Sam can release something more Countrier next to redeem himself. There isn't really anything too country to release off of Montevallo if they go with another single off of that album. If you ask me the only country song was "Leave The Night On" and perhaps "House Party". I bet he'll pull an FGL for his lead single for his next album. Release something along the lines of "Dirt" that's pretty genuinely country and the rest of the album won't be as country or country at all. Off topic but I bet FGL's song after Anything Goes, so the lead single from their next album, will be absolutely atrocious.

I don't think Sam can redeem himself. I think he needs to just leave country because he is not country whatsoever. Go to Pop Sam!

And no one would miss him whatsoever You can dislike someone, I get it. Most of your posts are complaining about disliking a certain style or artists or sub-genre. That's fine, I guess. But you sound delusional when you say no one would miss him. He is extremely popular and yes, people would miss him. Obviously not you, but guess what? Not everyone has your exact tastes. I am not a fan of certain artists, but I'm not arrogant enough to think that if they left the genre they would not be missed.

I've been on the fence about buying Montevallo for MONTHS now.
I like every Sam Hunt single. I don't care if he's country or not. His music is made with effort and quality. Comparing him (and his rnb/pop influence) to Thomas Rhett is as insult to Sam, in my opinion.
Thomas, to me, purposely was re-marketed and engineered to be genre bending, with pop filler songs throughout his new album, with a few country songs to keep him on the genre chart.
Montevallo is Sam's first album. There are videos on YouTube of him singing the same songs for YEARS. He's always been the type of songwriter and artist for a while now. He was promoted to country radio and stuck like glue. At least it's good!
