Wow, "History" is like... not country at all. If it was released straight to CHR, I could see it doing alright there and I wouldn't have batted an eyelash if I hadn't know she had a prior country music background. I really hope "Next Boyfriend" sounds nothing like that musically, because the live performance she gave of it sounded so promising, but the pure pop feel of "History" puts me on edge. I could see Lauren Alaina balancing the poppier stuff with the countrier stuff pretty nicely (like Carrie Underwood), but "History" isn't a good example of that, imo. Still can't wait to hear more new music from her though because her voice is incredible. There's so much talent there. <3

Wow, "History" is just terrible.
Lauren is so talented, it's frustrating to see so many young female artists being stripped of their identity because of record labels and politics.
Young female artists need support from both radio and the public, but instead they're being hung out to dry.
It's truly baffling that all the Nashville executives pressure so many artists into completely changing their sound for the sake of (possible) success when it usually doesn't end up being a successful gamble, anyway. Lauren would be so much better off just doing her own thing, but (unfortunately), she's probably too "green" to realize/care that she can make music without having to settle for trying to please a major label that wants to mold her into their next star.

THIS JUST PLAIN PISSES ME OFF.
I like "Next Boyfriend" it's OK. Not super compelling but whatever.
"History" is even NOT REMOTELY COUNTRY! Why do these artists keep chasing trends and dragging the genre down with them? WHY?! F**^ING WHY!?!?
I'll tell you why. Because they don't know who they are! And even if they do know who they are operating from a position of FEAR. Fear of pissing off their label execs. Fear of FAILURE at radio.
These poor "artists". "Evolving". Screw that.
We need a Shania moment, a Gretchen Wilson moment. Someone to come out and say "enough with the bulls&&T!!" I thought we had it with Maddie & Tae in "Girl In A Country Song" but "Fly" killed their momentum. Here's hoping they can get it back with whatever they release next. It's not Kacey, she doesn't play the game. Who else?
By now I'm rambling but my God, what is this genre doing? We truly do need a Country Music Jesus to come and save us all!

Says who? When male artists change direction and release these songs, I NEVER see anyone say it's because of their record label.

History is listed as pop on iTunes. Maybe they are planning on having a split album?

It's obvious that BOTH male and female artists face pressure from record labels to fit a certain image, but I chose to only focus on female artists in this post because Lauren is one of (many) new females facing a big identity crises right now. The females DO face an entirely different set of battles than the males do, and I don't see why I would even need to mention male artists when discussing that. Young female artists who don't yet know who they are do face an entirely different set of challenges, and there's more than enough evidence to prove it.

Well based on that tweet about this being associated with 'CollegeGameDay', I have my doubts that this song will even be on the forthcoming album then. I initially thought it was like a promo track off that, and it still could be, but I'm not thinking that it's not all that likely and it's probably just a one-off track associated with something else like "Let's Ride" for Easton Corbin, i.e. So.... yeah, even though I expressed a distaste with the sound of "History" not being country, some of these responses are getting a little extreme (especially the outburst from mus1cr0w... chill, dude).

The song is ok. Kinda has a Jessie J. feel to it.

HA! So it was just the ineptitude of the publicity at the label that got me so mad.
Thank God this is not being sent to country radio.

pressroom.umgnashville.com/news/lauren-alaina-writes-and-records-exclusive-track-for-espns-college-football-campaign/NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 31, 2015) – Worldwide sports leader ESPN selects country star Lauren Alaina to create a track exclusively for this season’s college football coverage. Lauren and Imagine Dragons were the only two artists chosen to contribute brand new recordings for ESPN and its college football promotion. “I have followed Lauren’s career and knew of her talent. The pageantry, traditions, passion and atmosphere of college football is unlike any other sport and Lauren has captured what makes the season special in her song ‘History’,” shares Kevin Wilson, ESPN Music Director. Alaina, along with Jesse Frasure and Emily Weisband, wrote “History” specifically for ESPN which will use the powerful song in its promotions across all platforms for the top college football matchups each week. The track will also be used as a central part of the campaign building towards the College Football Playoff (CFP) semifinals on New Year’s Eve and the CFP National Championship on January 11, 2016. “For a southern girl, college football is everything. I am so pumped to have my song used for ESPN’s college football coverage,” Alaina excitedly explains. “Thank you ESPN for giving me something to make my boyfriend, dad, and brother think I’m that much cooler!” Alaina is currently on radio tour in support of her highly-anticipated new music expected at country radio next month.

She's been doing the radio tour for months now, will this really help her once the single is released? Hope Interscope won't screw Lauren

Hope Interscope won't screw Lauren It can actually be very beneficial to build a relationship with the people you want to play your music. It's a very clever technique, in my opinion. She's doing live shows for these people, and building an actual personal relationship with some. That way, when her new music comes across their desk, radio programmers may be a little more willing to give Lauren a shot; especially if they know there was a positive reaction to her music during her acoustic sets. Honestly, Lauren already has the fan base necessary to get a hit, and she has the quality music for it too, she just needs to get radio on her side... I think she's off to a good start in that field. Now if her label decides to support her after the release, that remains to be seen, but it does look to me like they're willing to put a little effort into promoting Lauren. Let's hope they're successful! Lauren's voice and music NEEDS to be heard, she truly could be the next big thing in country if they play their cards right.

I'm really optimistic she'll get pushed. Why would Interscope/Mercury Nashville spend all these money for the radio tours if they won't promote her properly once the actual single goes out??? Hopefully the radio add date is also on October 5, same day as the iTunes release.

You're exactly right with how it works, but I really hate the whole radio tour aspect. The problem is that EVERY SINGLE ARTIST goes on a radio tour, and therefore radio feels obligated to play EVERY SINGLE ARTIST (hence the extremely slow-moving charts)...and the artists that are the most popular and the most-liked by fans get the most airplay. In short, it's not about the quality of the music...it's about whether or not that artist kissed radio's a$$ enough.

For what it's worth I heard this on Big Froggy 101 in State College, PA (WFGE) yesterday. From what I remember it wasn't too poppy. Definitely had some country elements. Certainly not as country as "Georgia Peaches" or "Eighteen Inches" but definitely a step up from "Barefoot and Buckwild". My overall impression was it wasn't terrible. I'm not a huge Lauren Alaina fan by the way but just thought I'd share that I heard it!
