How have they been successful despite having a sound that is dated circa mid-00's emo-pop-punk ?

I just cannot articulate or understand how they have been so successful on so little actual substance. They aren't attractive or sexy. They look like they need several baths. They lack charisma and that x-factor. They lack personality. Their music is beyond basic. Their lyrics are misogynistic. They seem really messy and trashy. Nothing about their shtick is terribly exciting, yet everyone is losing their shit over them. Why?

Probably because they opened for One Direction on their last 2 tours and fangirls started to love them for that reason alone.

Because they're young and attractive. That's basically it.

Let me clarify: I don't find them attractive. Lonely teenage girls find them attractive. That's why they're famous.

Here's a wild bit of speculation: maybe a lot of people (and not just teenagers) actually still like music that some say sounds like "dated circa mid-00's emo-pop-punk"? Just a longshot guess from someone who does and age-wise could be their father (in fact my appearance could almost have passed for that, or at least their older brother, when I woke up this morning.)

Fun fact: Your definition of what's attractive isn't the same as everyone else's.

Fun fact: Your definition of what's attractive isn't the same as everyone else's. We discussed it at work and most of the late teens and early 20 somethings thought they looked gross and weird too. Most go absolutely gaga for Zayn and Niall and to a certain extent, Liam and Louis. Most are not here for Harry though. The ones who don't love themselves really go gaga for Harry. There was one who is absolutely obsessed with Harry. Her ultimate fantasy is for Harry to rub his wild, flowing hair all over her body and call her "Pamela" (her name is NOT Pamela!). She also was obsessed with Chris Kirkpatrick of N Sync when they were a thing. मैं ऐसा नहीं करना चाहता हूँ ।
