One Direction's pretty much done, so no. I'd say Katy and Taylor will stay because I can't really see them become irrelevant in 5 years time especially considering their strong fanbase, whether they're still relevant in 5 years time depends solely on them and what they decide to do with their careers, but otherwise they'll still be popular. Sam Smith, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande are toss-ups, they could go either way, depends on how well received their following albums are. Unless they finally decide to promote more female rappers, I think Nicki Minaj is here to stay. I think Meghan Trainor is an "of the time" artist, she's doing well right now, but I think people are already starting to get tired of her, so I don't see her still being popular in 5 years time. I don't think Selena or Demi will still be around in 5 years time, Demi never really had a huge level of popularity (music-wise) compared to other major pop stars, and I can't really see Selena continuing to maintain her level of popularity for that much longer, although she has a much better chance of still being relevant in 5 years time than Demi, it really depends on the direction music goes in that period. Justin Bieber is also a toss-up, it depends if he continues the momentum he's going on right now, if he does, I think he's here to stay. I don't think Jessie J will have another major U.S. hit, "Bang Bang" was big mostly because of the "featured" artists. Fifth Harmony and Little Mix are the most likely to be irrelevant in 5 years: they were never really that huge to begin with (Fifth Harmony's "Worth It" was really the only hit that even made the top 20 from any of them), and most girl groups don't last very long, I think they're "of the moment" fads. As far as Rihanna goes, right now is hard to tell, but there's actually a chance that she could become irrelevant in 5 years, but at the same time, she could still be making hits well into that period, people didn't think she'd last very long when she first came out before the "Good Girl Gone Bad" album catapulted her into a star, so we'll see.

One Direction's pretty much done, so no. Hello, they haven't even gotten started. 1D probably depend on how long their "hiatus" is. Assuming they've regrouped by 2020, they probably will have a large fanbase or at least will be widely remembered, but whether that translates into actual hits is an open question. Arguably their radio success thus far hasn't matched their overall popularity.

And I kind of forgot, but I don't see either 5SOS, Miley or Lana Del Rey being relevant 5 years from now. Soon enough, Miley's antics are going to wear thin on people and won't have anything to fall back on anymore, 5 Seconds Of Summer are just "in the moment" artists and eventually their teen audience will move on to the next teen sensation. And Lana was never really too much of a force on mainstream radio, she's only had one major hit and that was mostly because of a dance remix, she'll still have several followers, but she probably won't come anywhere close to matching the commercial success of "Summertime Sadness".

Lady Gaga - Will still be paid attention to, though I don't know if radio will still play along. It should. Katy Perry - Yes, probably. Rihanna - Maybe. Will have been 15 years since her first hit, but still well enough known that she may still be having new hits. Lana Del Rey - May still be active, but I doubt she'll actually be having hits. After two years, "Summertime Sadness" seems somewhat flukish. Taylor Swift - Yes, in whatever musical direction. Nicki Minaj - Probably. Miley Cyrus - May still be talked about, but I don't know about played. Selena Gomez - Maybe. I was doubtful of her musical longevity at first, but she keeps proving skeptics wrong. Demi Lovato - Dunno. Has hits, but they mostly seem pretty anonymous and tend to fade fast. Ariana Grande - Decent chance for longevity, though more distinctive material would help. Like some others on here, acting career helps. One Direction - Depends on how long their "hiatus" is. Justin Bieber - Quite possibly. I'd have doubted it until recently, but his comeback after a run of bad press is pretty impressive and he has six years of hits by now. Sam Smith - He should, unless there's a backlash due to overexposure. Jessie J - Doubt it. Meghan Trainor - Maybe, but seems ephemeral; her hits may be remembered more than her. Fifth Harmony - Probably not; pretty generic sounding and only one really big hit to date. 5SOS - I like them, but I doubt it unless they manage to establish themselves in the public eye more as rockers than as a "boy band with guitars". If they don't, blame the media/promotion. Little Mix - So far, no. Overseas, maybe, but no really big US hits so far.

The biggest NO being Rihanna, of course. She is making such a disastrous move by not releasing her album that she is quickly becoming passé. She seems like a non-entity at this point.
And I think Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift, in 5 years time, will all rely on lead singles to perform well before their "eras" pan out. All veterans have to face that reality sooner or later. Depends on their motivation, and I feel all 3 have it.
And the biggest YES to Justin Bieber. Just imagine a filled-out, muscular, tattooed Justin at the age of 26. He is going to be huge.

How can anyone possibly think that Justin Bieber (coming from his biggest airplay success and most universally acclaimed hit) WON'T be rocking the charts in 5 years time?
Or maybe Little Mix will fill that void instead.

Hopefully MOST of those people on that abysmal list will be gone and we'll have ushered in some real singers and dancers to entertain us.

Honestly, aside from the groups and maybe Jessie J, I can see most of those people still doing some kind of damage, even if it most likely won't be as high as their peaks then. I don't think Sam Smith will be as red hot as he's been the past year or so, but he will definitely still be a familiar face and not hurting for work.
I think Nicki will likely be much less active then though because she's been upfront about wanting an acting career and not planning on being a rapper into her 40s. Don't think she'll actually fully retire, but she'll be far less frequent.

Lana Del Rey does not belong on this list....she is not a top 40 act and is more of a hipster staple. She could very well still be having solid selling albums with no commercial radio. She is a different type of artist than the rest on the list.

Well, let's look at 5 years ago. 2010: Katy Perry (currently on hiatus between albums, still produced hits on her last release) Eminem (not the superstar he was hit wise, but still sells albums like crazy) Train (had their random resurgence in 2010 only to disappear again) Ke$ha (legal issues currently bogging her down) B.o.B (still gets some attention from the rhythmic and urban crowd) Taio Cruz (pretty much unheard of now) Lady Gaga (in between albums, last one produced hits but struggled to do so, but is a critical darling with her work in between albums) Usher (people still take notice, but he definitely has lost his knack for producing hits) Bruno Mars (as big as ever) Rihanna (8th album still in limbo, but is still a hit maker) Enrique Iglesias (dips in and out of popularity like crazy, but remains mostly popular in Latino world) Lady Antebellum (still does well in country, has yet to repeat mainstream success of "Need You Now") Flo Rida (can still produce hits, surprisingly) Owl City (lol) Jason Derülo (still very much relevant today) The Black Eyed Peas (Fergie is no longer with them, latest music isn't catching on) Yolanda Be Cool (lol) Shakira (last album failed to produce a big hit in the states, but still garnered attention, likely not a big hit maker but still very much in public eyes) Mike Posner (lol) Travie McCoy (lol) Justin Bieber (on track to becoming a major male pop star) Nelly (drifts in and out of GP's collective consciousness) Iyaz (lol) Far East Movement (lol) Cee Lo Green (still a celebrity, but not a hitmaker) Jay-Z (see: Eminem) P!nk (in between albums, currently on hiatus) Edward Maya (lol) Timbaland (still talked about in production world, but nowhere near the hitmaker he used to be) Some of these are surprising, and yet many aren't. A lot of the artists off of this list are on the list we're discussing today, which is probably a good thing for them. Lady Gaga - She'll likely continue her trend of losing relevance, but I fully expect some more big hits out of her, just fewer and farther between. She'll likely produce a few jazz/AC albums along the way to keep in the critics good graces. Katy Perry - She'll never top Teenage Dream, and she'll probably also start to lose her hitmaking power, but she'll still be relevant in 5 years. Rihanna - She's got that icon status. I fully expect some more hits from her for a while, slowly fading away as time passes. Lana Del Rey - She'll keep up the album sales for sure, but likely won't have many mainstream hits. Taylor Swift - She'll likely never top 1989, so essentially I'm expecting her to follow Katy Perry's career trajectory, just a little slower. Nicki Minaj - I definitely still see her being relevant in the rap world, but likely not so much in the mainstream outside of celebrity status. Miley Cyrus - Depends on her direction of choice for music. Really up in the air. Selena Gomez - Possibly? This era is really her deciding factor, really. Demi Lovato - Same as Selena. Ariana Grande - Hm... for some reason I see her having a similar career trajectory to Avril Lavigne. I don't know why, but yeah... One Direction - No. They'll have disbanded by then. Justin Bieber - Most likely. This era seems like it'll be the one to put him in the pop world's good graces. Sam Smith - See: Norah Jones Jessie J - Unless she has a random breakthrough hit that people can actually attach to her name, she will fade into obscurity. Meghan Trainor - Hard to tell based off of just one era. Fifth Harmony - Probably not. 5SOS - Yeah, no. Little Mix - Maybe outside the US, but likely not. Lana Del Rey does not belong on this list....she is not a top 40 act and is more of a hipster staple. She could very well still be having solid selling albums with no commercial radio. She is a different type of artist than the rest on the list. This isn't talking about hit singles specifically, it's just discussing the charts in general. Lana Del Rey does very well with album sales. Bascially the question is asking if you think she'll continue that.

Lady Gaga - Yes, I see her having a comeback with her next era and regain her foothold in pop music, but definitely not as big as TF/TFM eras Katy Perry - Yes, she'll probably have a few more albums with the same hit success as Prism. Another TD era is definitely not happening Rihanna - No. I think her upcoming era will be moderate but I can see her popularity falling apart over the next 5 years Lana Del Rey - No. She'll still be an album seller, but I don't see anymore mainstream success Taylor Swift - Yes, biggest name in pop music right now, will probably have a handful of successful eras over the next many years Nicki Minaj - No. I see her staying popular in rap. Maybe one or two more mainstream hits. Miley Cyrus - No. If she keeps with her whole indie music road Selena Gomez - Yes, she seems to slowly get more popular with each era. Demi Lovato - Yes, same as Selena. She gets more fans with each era. Ariana Grande - Yes, My Everything was huge and I can see her stepping it up with her upcoming eras. I predict her to have a massive era at some point. One Direction - No. They're splitting up Justin Bieber - Yes. WDYM has revived Justin and he is on his way to being a huge pop star ala JT Sam Smith - Yes. He'll have successful eras but not as big as his past era. Jessie J - No. She seems to only get a few random hits in the US Meghan Trainor - Yes. If she changes her sound and doesn't stick to the doo-wop sound, she'll probably stay. Fifth Harmony - No. I can see them breaking up within 5 years. 5SOS - No. See above Little Mix - No. See above.

Will likely still be the same in 5 years. Lorde - No Maroon 5 - Maroon 5 is really just Adam Levine at this point. He'll still be big 5 years from now but he might be more focused on his solo work. Ellie Goulding - Yes Macklemore - No
