No.10-No.4
No.3-No.1 will be announced tomorrow, the last day of the year!! Tomorrow the #1 song of the year will be revealed!
#10: Shut Up And Dance - WALK THE MOON
Weeks: 34 [spent 1 more week in 2014]
Peak: 3
Points: 3,709,500
Notes: My friends were all over this last fall, and I caught onto this song because they played it so much. So this song reached its peak of #3 in mid-March long before it reached its peak on the Hot 100 in late May. This was the only alternative #1 hit this year to make it past #50 (Mumford & Son's "Believe" peaked at #50) and one of the few alternative top 50 year-end hits that made it into the top 50 (Other than "Believe", Imagine Dragons' "I Bet My Life" and "Shots" went to #32 and #24 respectively, Hozier's "Take Me To Church" peaked at #19, George Ezra's "Budapest" peaked at #7, twenty one pilots' "Stressed Out" just debuted on my chart at #97, and James Bay's "Hold Back the River" reached #9). I think I liked this because it was definitely more pop-leaning than most alternative hits. This is such a jam :)
#9: Blank Space - Taylor Swift
Weeks: 51* [spent 9 more weeks in 2014]
Peak: 1 (2 weeks) [spent 4 more weeks at #1 in 2014]
Points: 3,738,600
Notes: Actually there were two more songs that spent the whole 2015 chart-year, and one of them was this song (and the other one is also by Taylor Swift, "Style"). This was the #12 year-end song of 2014, and it has earned more than 7.3 million points. The video for this was perfect, and partly because of that video, this song will probably remembered as one of Taylor's signature songs.
#8: Girl Crush - Little Big Town
Weeks: 46*
Peak: 1 (2 weeks)
Points: 3,905,100
Notes: I've been a fan of Little Big Town ever since I heard "Pontoon" a little more than three years ago and every single one of their singles since then have made it to the top 10 ("Pain Killer" isn't looking good though), but this became their first #1 song. At first I wasn't too keen on the song because it was such a slow song (I tend to like faster songs more) but when the whole controversy happened, I actually paid attention to what the lyrics were and from then I was hooked. I was really disappointed when it didn't make it to #1 on country radio, but considering the fact that this song was hanging around in the 30s, it did well. I'm really happy about the Grammy song of the year nomination
#7: Lean On - Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat. MØ
Weeks: 32*
Peak: 1 (1 week)
Points: 3,933,900
Notes: I didn't understand the appeal of this at first, but it became one of my favorite songs of the year! It became a hit everywhere around the world, even in the US! I could have totally seen this as a hit in Europe, but not in the US, and this song surprised me by hitting #1 on top 40 radio and #4 on the Hot 100. It had longevity on the Hot 100 as well, and it made the top 20 of the year-end Hot 100 which was another pleasant surprise to me. The followup "Powerful" didn't do as well in the US, but it reached #13 on my chart. The current single "Light It Up" is probably going to debut on my chart in the coming weeks.
#6: Take Your Time - Sam Hunt
Weeks: 38
Peak: 1 (2 weeks)
Points: 4,099,200
Notes: 6 songs made it past the 4 million point threshold in the 2015 chart-year, and this was one of them. Last year there were 10 songs that made it past 4 million points, and if this was last year, this song would have ranked at #11. I surprisingly enjoyed the combination of rap and singing in a country (?) song. I wanted this to do well on top 40 radio, but unfortunately it didn't :'( They could have sent "Leave the Night On" to pop, but oh well...
#5: Wildest Dreams - Taylor Swift
Weeks: 20* [spent 1 more week in 2014]
Peak: 1 (8 weeks)
Points: 4,178,100
Notes: This became the longest-reigning #1 out of any of the 1989 singles so far. This was one of my favorite album tracks on 1989 when the album was released, and I didn't think she would release this song because Taylor tends to not release her best songs on her albums ("All Too Well", "Last Kiss", "Dear John", "Cold As You", "You're Not Sorry" etc.) but I'm so glad it was released! Because "Out of the Woods" is the next single, she automatically now has six consecutive #1s from 1989, and it becomes her seventh consecutive #1 single (starting with "Red") and her eighth consecutive #1 song ("All Too Well" reached #1 after the Grammy performance). The Taylor domination does not let up..
#4: Bad Blood - Taylor Swift feat. Kendrick Lamar
Weeks: 33* [spent 1 more week in 2014]
Peak: 1 (5 weeks)
Points: 4,588,800
Notes: "Bad Blood" improved so much with the added beats in the remix! The music video which got her the Video of the Year Award at the MTV VMAs was great as well! This is probably my least favorite single out of 1989, but the fact that this could come in at #4 year-end shows how much I love Taylor :) At this point, the top 10 is dominated by Taylor lol...
* denotes that the song is still charting.
