Mediabase Revises AC Recurrent Rule AC Changes Effective next week, MEDIABASE will modify its recurrent rule at AC only. Songs will move to recurrent if they are downtrending and meet one of the following criteria:
(1) 40 weeks below No. 5 (2) 30 weeks below No. 10 (3) 20 weeks below No. 15

Is there a web page where we can see where this info came from?Never mind...it's on All Access' page!

I guess this will help (slightly) increase the turnover on AT10 (which uses the Mediabase AC chart)...

I'm glad Mediabase finally got rid of "Bad Day" on the AC chart. Under the old R&R recurrent rules, it would've been gone just as soon as it fell below #5. However, Mediabase kept it around for several more weeks.

Next week we should see 3 recurrents on AC. Crazy, BH&TCT & The Riddle are all eligible under the new rules. Unwritten also goes when she falls out of the top 5.

This may get songs off the chart faster. But, it does not get these songs off the air. All of the songs on the Recurrents chart are played far more often than hits still categorized as Current. Heck, "Every Breath You Take" would still be a Top 30 AC hit if there were no recurrent rules! AC radio cannot find something else to play that frequently than a 24 year old overplayed hit?!? Mediabase or Billboard can change the chart rules all they want. It still will not deal with how redundant and stale AC playlists have become.

I have to agree with ^^^. This is just another symptom of the dying current based format of AC. Soon this format will have to be called Adult Hits Lite.
Don't get me wrong, I like the AC format. I would like it to evolve back into what it used to be with plenty of currents.

I much agree with this. Not to mention overplaying the same old recurrents and golds to death.
Has Mediabase not been consistent with the old R&R recurrent rule? What rule had Mediabase been using lately?

I think these new rules will force at a least a few new songs into the top 20. And that may lead to at least a few stations maybe adding songs that they would not have otherwise considered adding. Maybe it won't make a huge difference, at least intially, but it could be the difference between, let's say Beyonce or Nelly Furtado being a decent hit versus a few token weeks on the chart.

As a result of the new rule, Josh Groban moves up to #11 unbuleted. Beyonce, John Mellancamp & Kimberley Locke break top 15. Jim Brickman leaps 29-20. Rod Stewart & Sarah McLachlan also break top 20. February Song debuts at #27, Hips Don't Lie re-enters at #29 and Eddie Money debuts bulletless at #30.

Seems like R&R will be doing the same: "R&R will be adjusting the recurrent rules on the AC chart effective with next week's rankings, in the issue dated March 30, 2007. Descending songs will now be moved to recurrent status based upon the following three-tiered system: if they rank below the top five after 52 weeks, if they rank below the top 10 after 26 weeks, or if they rank below the top 15 after 20 weeks." gfa.radioandrecords.com/PublishGFA/GFANextPage.asp?sDate=03/26/2007&Format=3 By next week, "Bad Day" and "Unwritten" could be gone (over 52 weeks, out of the Top 5). "Black Horse & The Cherry Tree," 'Crazy," "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and "You Are Loved (Don't Give Up)" could also be gone (over 26 weeks, out of the Top 10). They may be off the chart, but not off the radio. Based on this week's chart, 14 recurrents would rank in the Top 30 if still eligible. And Billboard's recurrent chart still shows the unstoppable "Every Breath You Take" and "Something To Talk About" in the Top 20.

I much agree with this. Not to mention overplaying the same old recurrents and golds to death. Has Mediabase not been consistent with the old R&R recurrent rule? What rule had Mediabase been using lately? No, they have not. Bob Seger's "Wait For Me" stayed around way longer than 20 weeks, even though it was below #15. And the 50/5 rule had never been enforced once R&R became part of Billboard last fall. They seemed to remove songs whenever they wanted to.
