I think "Gettin' In The Way" would be a great choice for the next single. The only song I'd prefer more is "Worry 'Bout Nothin'". "Blue Ain't Your Color" could make for a good single, but I don't think Keith should release another ballad next after having already released a ballad earlier this year, that of course being "Break On Me".
I just don't think that "Boy Gets A Truck" has as much hit potential. Personally, it's one of my least favorite songs on the album; I don't particularly care for the chorus, where the last word of each line and the first word of the next line are the same. There aren't a lot of specifics to the lyrics, either. It's similar to "Raise 'Em Up" too (and I actually like BGAT better than REU). I'm sure almost any song on this album would be a hit, but I think "Gettin' In The Way" is more likely to connect with the general public than "Boy Gets A Truck".
"Gettin' In The Way" doesn't offer much of anything new either (from a lyrics standpoint), but it just sounds like more of a hit to my ears than "Boy Gets A Truck" does. Perhaps the biggest indicator for me, if we're only talking "Gettin' In The Way", "Blue Ain't Your Color", and "Boy Gets A Truck", is Spotify streams. "Gettin' In The Way" and "Blue Ain't Your Color" are in the middle of the pack among Ripcord tracks. "Boy Gets A Truck" is at the very bottom.
Here are total Spotify streams for Ripcord tracks, not including the 3 singles:
1) Gone Tomorrow (Here Today) - 573,461 streams
2) Habit Of You - 787,969 streams
3) Sun Don't Let Me Down (f/ Pitbull) - 1,386,308 streams
4) Gettin' In The Way - 611,743 streams
5) Blue Ain't Your Color - 610,536 streams
6) The Fighter (f/ Carrie Underwood) - 5,726,624 streams
7) Boy Gets A Truck - 559,219 streams
8) Your Body - 681,418 streams
9) That Could Still Be Us - 615,930 streams
10) Worry 'Bout Nothin' - 563,071 streams
I would hope that labels look at info like this. Obviously there are tons of other streaming platforms: Apple Music, Pandora, YouTube, etc. But the above info suggests to me that "Gone Tomorrow (Here Today)" would be a poor single choice. It's the first track on the album and normally you'd expect the first track to have more streams than a lot of the tracks that follow, but "Gone Tomorrow (Here Today)" is one of the least streamed tracks on Ripcord. "Habit Of You" is doing exceptionally well, and I think it would make for a great single, so I'm a bit surprised that they apparently aren't considering it. Obviously the two features (especially "The Fighter") will see a lot of streams. "Boy Gets A Truck" is sequenced right after "The Fighter" and "Break On Me" in the tracklist, and yet there's a huge dropoff in streams, only for the streams to climb again rather substantially for the next track, "Your Body". Even the ballad "That Could Still Be Us" has numbers that are quite a bit better than "Boy Gets A Truck".
Now, of course I wanted "Worry 'Bout Nothin'" as the single, and its streams are pretty much right on par with BGAT, but WBN is the last track on the album so that probably has a bit of an effect on its streaming numbers.

Looking at those numbers, none of them are really streaming particularly heavily except "The Fighter" and "Sun Don't Let Me Down" all of the others are within 100k streams or so which is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
I agree that "Gettin' In The Way" has a hit sound. But man, we've just heard so MUCH of "that" Keith. "In the driveway, who would have thought in the drive way"? Really? I just have a hard time buying some of the lyrics.
"Blue Ain't Your Color" is an original idea and I haven't heard it in a song like that before. But there are simply too many ballads at radio right now for Keith to release one. Wait until Nov. I bet a lot of the guys on ballads right now will come with tempos and the lane will be open.
I know Ive said it, but "Boy Gets A Truck" is the strongest candidate for tempo and substance. Sure, it has the "kids" element that "Raise Em Up" had. But who cares? Also, wasn't that nominated for vocal event/song of the year? I can't remember. In my opinion that is the best written song on the album and could be a Song Of The Year candidate if it sees radio.
I also think that BGAT could help Keith's image with the "country" crowd. A lot of people thin he's a pretty boy singing pop songs. Singing a "life" song like BGAT could give him some cred among the "flyover state crowd".
Perhaps you aren't the demographic for BGAT?

Singing a "life" song like BGAT could give him some cred among the "flyover state crowd". Perhaps you aren't the demographic for BGAT? MR "Raise 'Em Up" did get a nomination for Song of the Year at the ACM Awards earlier this year, but in the end it really wasn't that big of a hit. I know a song doesn't need to be a big hit to be nominated for Song of the Year, but to me the fact that REU wasn't a huge hit suggests that BGAT wouldn't do any better. It'd probably be a top 5 or another #1, but as I said earlier, anything that Keith releases would do just as well. I think the main reason that REU was nominated was because of the theme of the lyrics, not necessarily the lyrics themselves. But anyway, if a duet with Eric Church wasn't able to help Keith's image with the more rural "country" crowd, then I don't think "Boy Gets A Truck" will either. And I just don't see "Boy Gets A Truck" as the well-written song that others do. The lyrics to me seem pretty simple, and again, I feel that they lack specifics. I prefer songs that have a bit more detail to them. Oh, and I'm not sure what you mean when you say that "perhaps I'm not in the demographic for 'Boy Gets A Truck'". I grew up on a farm outside a town of 2500 people (my dad farms more than 600 acres of land), and I own a truck, lol. I drive it everyday. I like 'life' songs a lot, but I just happen to feel that "Boy Gets A Truck" isn't that well-written. And I do think that the difference in streaming numbers is pretty significant, especially if the numbers are trending fairly similarly on Apple Music and YouTube (admittedly I haven't looked at that data). On Spotify alone the gap between "Habit of You" and "Boy Gets A Truck" is pretty significant. When a song has only 500,000 some streams, but another song is 100,000 or 200,000 streams ahead...well, that's a pretty big percentage difference. It just seems that there are already some indicators that suggest BGAT wouldn't connect as well with the general public as you personally think it might.

Meh.. we will just have to agree to disagree here. It resonates with me. A guy whose first vehicle was a truck.
Also, i think "raise em up" was one of the finest songs from last year ( it only went #1 and got an ACM nom but whatever, right!?). You didnt care for it therefore we obviously have different tastes.
"Gettin in the way" is kind of like "drink on it" or "I'll just hold on" for Blake. No one will really remember or feel anything in a few years if they hear it.
But hey, we don't pick the singles do we!?

"Raise 'Em Up" was far and away my favorite from Fuse, both as a song and as record (i.e., taking into account production, which is where my other potential favorite, "We Were Us," faltered for me). I don't disagree that "Gettin' in the Way" would be more of the same from Keith and probably not remembered down the road. And I'm probably not in the demo to which "Boy Gets a Truck" is geared, if for no other reason than I'm tired of the boy being the one to get and drive the truck. I know, I know, it's a "story as old as...when they first rolled off the assembly line" per the lyrics, but it's somewhat surprising to see co-writer Aaron Scherz, who is so vital to Maddie & Tae's breakthrough, looking backward here. But I root for Aaron Scherz, so if he gets a single here, great. And if Emily Weisband, a terrific young talent, gets her first hit single with "Gettin' in the Way," then I'll be happy for her as well. Past that, I'm not invested enough in any of the songs on Ripcord (other than "Blue Ain't Your Color," probably) to care whether any particular song is a single (well, beyond previously stated concerns about "The Fighter" vis-à-vis what I hope will be a countrier single from Storyteller). I think that jhomes87 is right that whatever Keith releases from Ripcord will likely do well at country radio, and not because he has a free pass there. Interesting debate about the potential value of Keith throwing a bone to the "flyover state" crowd. jhomes87 makes a good point about Keith's relationship with that demo at this point, though I think that "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16" was a form of outreach, and that certainly did well. So maybe, streams to date notwithstanding, it wouldn't be a bad idea to return to that well. On the other hand, I'm also a believer in taking indicators of early interest into account.

But hey, we don't pick the singles do we!? MR For the record, I like Ripcord quite a bit. It's not really a country album, but I do like it. Is it my favorite Keith album? Not by a long shot (that would probably still be either Be Here or Love, Pain, & the Whole Crazy Thing). And I don't think "Boy Gets A Truck" is a bad song at all...it just happens to be one of my 2 or 3 least favorites from an album that's full of catchy pop songs. As for "Raise 'Em Up", nowhere did I say that I didn't like it. Go check the "Raise 'Em Up" thread, go check the 'Weekly Pulse Country Chart' thread. I'm on record multiple times on this forum stating how much I like REU. I simply said that I don't like it as much as BGAT. Oh, and I'm not sure why you felt the need to include "it only went #1 and got an ACM nom but whatever, right!?" in parentheses, as if I wasn't aware of that and hadn't already acknowledged that. I found REU to be one of the better songs on Fuse (although Fuse is one of my least favorite Keith albums), but I personally don't think it was one of the absolute best songs released in the last couple of years. Obviously we have different preferences there. The reason I said REU wasn't that big of a hit is because it's Keith's lowest-peaking single on the Hot 100 since 2010. It's true that the 4th and 5th singles from albums usually don't chart as high on the Hot 100 as the earlier singles do (and REU was the 5th single from Fuse), but then again, REU also had Eric Church on it, and it still didn't seem to move the needle as much as one might expect (from a sales and streams standpoint). For me, the last truly great single from Keith was "For You", and before that it was "'Til Summer Comes Around", which is one of my all-time favorite songs. Keith has never released a bad song (in my opinion), but of course I like some of his songs better than others. I really like "Wasted Time", "Somewhere In My Car", "Long Hot Summer", and "I'm In", and I think the 1-2 punch of "Stupid Boy" and "I Told You So" in 2007 is one of the best 1-2 punches ever.

Interesting 6 of the 8 songs you note were written or co-written by Keith. Even with Stupid Boy it is pretty well known he made significant changes to the original melody and composed a nearly 3 minute outro, but never took a songwriting credit. Perhaps you prefer Keith's own style of melody and lyric versus the songs he interprets from other writers? I too tend to gravitate to the songs Keith composes and wish he would find his confidence as writer again and go back to 8-10 cuts per album being his own.

I agree that Getting In The Way is forgettable-I had to go back and listen to remember it. Granted, this album isn't one of my favorites, but certain songs definitely stood out-for good (Blue Aint Your Color-excellent; hope it is a single in the fall) or bad (The Fighter- blech; pure pop without the charm and fun of his last album We Were Us duet).
So far the singles have all made sense-whether I personally think they are meh (JJJ-good lyrics but boring melody) or great (Break on Me-beautiful lyrics and melody-one of my favorite Keith songs) but Getting in The Way doesn't make sense to me, although I do understand the streaming argument.
I'm in the camp of Boy Gets A Truck even though it is cliche (Isn't 75% of Country Music based on well worn recurring themes-it can get difficult to present in new ways). Maybe it will be more popular than Raise Em Up (my eventual favorite off of Fuse), which I think could have been more popular if it was more obvious that it was Eric dueting with Keith (they sounded too much alike)-or another A- Lister whose sound was more identifiable.

There are a lot of good songs left. I hope we get three more singles. I would love to see habit of you be one. Boy gets a truck should be one also. And the fighter. And sun don't let me down on pop lol

Well, not saying that this has everything to do with it but it does present some indicators... The tour is 3 weeks in now and changes have been made already. Keith's stated time and time again that he really wants to change things up throughout the tour (he's getting such a huge catalog of songs it's nearly impossible to play them all) but I have to say for the first time this tour he's REALLY doing that.
I always seem to be in the minority with the general public, but here goes, lol:
- Gone Tomorrow, Here Today is one of my favorites off the album. It's amazing live and I'm surprised it's not higher in streaming numbers. Will it be a single? At this point I would say no. - Not including previously released singles, next would be Habit Of You. He has NOT been doing this one at the live shows yet, but I have confirmation that he is going to put it in the setlist (I'm assuming as early as this coming weekend.) A lot of people are asking about it and I think it's becoming one of the album favorites (without even looking at streaming numbers, which are obviously also on the high end of the album) - This one might have more single potential than we think a little bit down the road. - Sun Don't Let Me Down - he did it opening night and hasn't done it since. It actually really seemed to connect with the crowd and they were totally into it, and lots are asking about it him signing it. While I obviously don't want it to be released to country radio nor do I think it will, I must admit I will be really bummed if I don't see it live at some point on this tour. - I'm going to stand up for Gettin In The Way here. Was it a favorite of mine from the beginning? Truthfully, it wasn't. With that being said, it really grew on me and this is a MUST SEE live. Sure, it may be about the same types of things that are usually talked about, but it at least it's brought about in a different way and sound... It has substance, to me at least. I wouldn't mind this being the next single as I think it would do better with the general public than BAYC would. - It's been thrown around a couple times now that Blue Ain't Your Color may be next. It's fantastic live and it really goes over well with the fans too. I personally think that if he releases it as a single, it shouldn't be next because Break On Me is still a fairly new song and this is a slower one. This is one that he's done every single night at the shows so far and I definitely see it being considered. - The Fighter - I've already stated my thoughts on this one as a future single as many here have. It's GREAT live, people really respond to it, and I have no doubts in my mind that it'll be a single. - Boy Gets A Truck - I have heard people here say that they have heard it may be a/the next single. I haven't heard it anywhere else but that obviously doesn't matter. I really like this one and think it would do well on country radio. Like GITW - it's theme is very common, but at it has substance and creativity. He has NOT done this one live yet and there hasn't been any talk about him adding it into the setlist yet. To me, this is a very good indicator of which songs really are being considered singles and which ones aren't. - Your Body obviously will not be a single, lol. During the tour rehearsals last month, someone suggested he do it and his reaction was rather priceless, lol. - That Could Still Be Us - at the beginning of the album release, this seemed like a frontrunner. He talked about it at all of the listening parties, release parties, etc. and he always performed this one. When the tour started he did it as part of the encore (and it was amazing) but it hasn't made an appearance in a couple weeks now. I personally love this one and to me, is the most "classical Keith-sounding" song on the album. Single? Thought it had a chance but now I'm not so sure. - Worry Bout Nothin - this is one of my absolute favorites off the album and I can't see why it doesn't seem like that big of a song. jhomes brought up a good point though, about it being last on the album. He has not done this one live yet one time, nor has it ever really even been mentioned and I cannot figure out why. Fans have been asking about this one A LOT too, and I think it would do really well on country radio. This too, is one of the more "classical Keith" sounding songs on the record. I reallyyyy wish they would do more with this song.
The only 3 to make it this far without being cut/traded out one time is BAYC, GITW and The Fighter (minus Gone Tomorrow, Here Today but that one will never be cut) - It seems they've become a staple to the setlist. I do know he wants to eventually try some of the other ones still though, so it'll be interesting to see what they do!)
I have a meet & greet coming up in a few weeks and I do intend on talking to him about some of this and picking his brain some. Obviously a new single will already have been picked out and most likely already announced/added but it can't hurt, especially with their future plans for after the next single. So happy for Keith and Wasted Time - that is also one of my favorites off of the album and performed live as well. Onto 21 #1s!!

I'm pretty sure he said something about "Gettin' In The Way" being the next single at his show last night in Michigan. What did you think of the show?! I went the night after :)

Most of the reviews I've read so far about the tour have been really good and some even calling him Entertainer of the Year!
Very happy about his 20th #1 for WT and looking forward to seeing what his next release will be. Said it before and I'll say it again....I love RIPCORD!

Where do you see all the setlists? I either have attended or know people who have attended almost every show so far. Yes, I grew up a KU superfan if y'all haven't noticed. I have Keith friends throughout the country and I'm a part of many groups who analyze each and every detail about just about everything lol, most normal people check online though... sometimes people post pictures and what not via social media! I am also so glad to hear you had such a good time at the show!!

1 = KEITH URBAN Wasted Time 8580 +68 651 -13 58.031 +0.489
2 = JASON ALDEAN Lights Come On 8266 +0 259 -37 55.820 +0.266
Second week at # 1 on both charts for Keith? Jason had called "power up for # 1" but Keith has remained stable throughout the week, in fact earned. And behind Jason, Carrie is going strong ... I still do not understand the strategy of the Capitol ... "Huntin 'fishin ..." of Luke went much better in sales (345k vs 212k) and streaming audio / video (example: on Spotify 15.000.000 vs 10.000.000; also on youtube views there is a lot of difference) than "Wasted Time" ... even though I do not love Luke, he deserved a second week # 1 more than Keith.

This songs peak definitely has confused me. Luke was definitely more deserving of a second week at #1, and last week this song needed a major boost in spins and audience to leap Jason. It all but seemed certain this would drop this week like most heavily pushed songs do. Now it's looking likely for a second week at #1? I'm surprised Broken Bow has played so nicely, but I'm guessing they feel confident next week is theirs. Anyways, this has definitely been an odd scenario.

I guess good for Keith for getting a second week. Definitely unexpected to say the least.
I do wonder if Broken Bow will try next week with Jason, I obviously think that they will as Carrie Underwood is about 2.4 miion in audience behind Jason, which is a comfortable enough lead. There is a sense of doubt since they said that this week they were "powering up to #1" so I took it as Broken Bow having this week as the push week.

Isn't "power up to #1" different than "max spins now"? I think Jason should still be fine since his single is still pretty young in its chart run.

It might be, I'm not a hundred percent sure, if I'm being honest. I figured that any memtion of going to #1 would imply some sort of push to the top. Jason song will be fine, as will Carrie and FGL I'm willing to say, but anything below them I am completely uncertain about.

I too am a bit surprised that Broken Bow took their foot off the gas this week, but I really don't see "Wasted Time" as a song that needed a big push. It got a pretty big push last week, but this is a song that would have hit #1 regardless. It made it to #1 in 13 weeks, which is one of the fastest-rising Keith singles in years. While I agree that Luke's song was the bigger hit, I think it's a bit unfair to compare the two of them. Luke is, after all, the most popular male artist in the mainstream country radio format when it comes to sales/airplay/streams. It's unlikely that a Keith Urban single (at this point in his career, which has spanned 17 years) would sell or stream as well as a Luke Bryan single. And remember, Capitol basically did request max spins for Luke last week (they had that "#1 and still goin' strong" ad out), so it was radio that didn't follow through. My guess is that radio was just more ready to move on from Luke's song than they are from Keith's, and so after the first couple of days last week, when Luke started falling, Capitol probably realized that they weren't going to be able to keep him at #1 for a 2nd week, and so they shifted their attention to "Wasted Time" instead. It's also possible that radio programmers like "Wasted Time" a little more than "Huntin', Fishin', and Lovin' Every Day". That's not to say that they don't like Luke's song -- obviously it was plenty popular at radio -- but perhaps they just felt Keith's song was a little better, or maybe they feel that WT is a little easier to program around. This topic came up in the Chris Stapleton "Nobody To Blame" thread; obviously NTB is a more extreme example of a song that programmers might find difficult to program around given that it's so traditional-sounding, but Luke's song is more towards the traditional-country end of the spectrum as well, and it doesn't have nearly as much going on when it comes to the production. In short, it's more sparsely-produced as compared to "Wasted Time", and radio often prefers to keep uptempo songs in max rotation longer than ballads or mid-tempos. So I think there are several possibilities as to why Luke was unable to hold on to the top spot last week, and I think the general "radio just wasn't willing to keep it in max rotation" possibility is most likely. After all, Luke didn't even come close to getting that 2nd week at #1. He finished nearly 6 million behind Keith, 4.3 million behind Jason, and 1.4 million behind Carrie. Capitol ran that "#1 and still going strong" ad for Luke in the daily Aircheck emails every day last week (just as they've run a "max spins" ad for Keith this week) but it seems that most programmers had already made up their minds and weren't willing to keep Luke in #1 rotation.

Jhomes, I love how you explain things so well. I have a hard time with some of the commenters saying other artist deserves so much more than Keith. That there song deserved the top more than Keith's. Maybe that's there opinion, but to me, Keith's song is a lot more enjoyable to hear on the radio than Luke's humdrum song about fishing and hunting.
Truly, I've been a fan of Keith Urban's for a long time and never have I been bored with his music like I have with others. Keith tries new things and experiments but you can pretty much predict what is going to come out of a song by Luke Bryan. I liked him a lot at first, but grew bored with his music, same as I have with Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley, but not going to rule out that I may never like anything else they release. I still sometimes like music by Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean (not his latest though) and other artists that I thought had good music, but could not get to the top
Granted we all have different taste so it seems that radio must have disagreed with those stating Luke's song was better. Just proud for Keith and enjoying his new album a lot.

You can count me in among those a little surprised that "Wasted Time" gets to coast to a second week at #1 here given that we seemed set up for a string of one-weekers with "Lights Come On" taking over this week at #1. Neither "Wasted Time" nor "Lights Come On" is a particularly big hit outside of country radio given sales and streams, but I think jhomes87 nailed it when she mentioned the tempo factor. When you look at the current top-10, you have at most three other songs that might be coded uptempo ("Church Bells," which is dark and sung by a female, so it might be coded differently; "Noise," which is so cluttered, it might be a tougher sell, and "Fix," which is just now gaining top-10 conversions). Moreover, we're heading into a long weekend in the U.S. which likely will have more than the usual pre-programming and during which country radio probably will want to favor uplifting, uptempo fare for outdoor celebrations and whatnot. So in retrospect, that's how I would explain "Wasted Time"'s second week at #1. It won't be a reflection of its overall impact as a song, just good timing and chart circumstance.

This song goes down better than wine on a hot summer day. I was laying on grass staring at the fireworks for Canada Day and this song really hit hard. I love how the production goes super hard and vocals have this dreamy, airy blissful sound to it. This song transcends genre without pandering or being apologetic to appealing to all.

I'm glad to see we have a Keith Urban fan here. I agree with you with everything said. Remember, country loves Coco!

I think you have a good theory. That billboard article early this month definitely seemed pretty revealing about how PD's like to program their stations, and since many were complaining about the lack of tempo at radio this summer, this could be a gentle but effective way of country radio saying "Hey labels, we want more uptempo fast songs, please oblige". The tell tale sign will be how fast "Lights Come On" and "Wasted Time" take ti drop out of the top 10. Radio certainly has been hesitant to let go of the decent sized hit "T-Shirt", yet couldn't wait to drop one of TIM MCGRAW's recent biggest hit in "Humble And Kind". Maybe this could also explain the baffling success of "Fix" (vomit's in mouth)?

Now it looks like we could have a split #1 this weekend (Jason on MB and Keith on BB, but that 207 spin gain for Jason though...). I was also surprised that "Wasted Time" could hold on for a second week at #1, but I would gladly take this over "Lights Come On". Very breezy and nice song to listen to especially on summer nights.

Keith will be #1 on Mediabase. "Wasted Time" was only out-gained by "Lights Come On" by 42 spins over the past six days and Keith has gained more audience. "Wasted Time" had a 684 point lead on this past week's chart. Judging the numbers, Jason has likely made up no ground this week. Barring some miraculous update tomorrow, Keith should hold on Mediabase.
