If "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)" could be released as a single and still receive airplay 20+ years later, I think "Choctaw County Affair" has a shot. This was mostly refered to as, "Sold" though. I don't see it being too much of an issue but I get the reasoning behind it. Hard to spell/look up for buying and streaming purposes perhaps. It's not like country music or Carrie have been getting many downloads or streams anyway, so I don't see the big deal.

Well, "Church Bells" is easy to type yet it isn't blowing up the downloads chart. Give me a song that - hard to spell or not - that people are invested enough in to download over an easy-to-type song any day of the week.

Nice move at MediaBase. A top 40 debut for sure. Expecting it to be the fastest climbing song at Billboard: 66 44 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Church Bells 692 155 537 4.664 So close, Church Bells went up fifteen (#50 to #35). However, Tucker Beathard went up sixteen with Rock On.

Only heard this a couple times before this past week but this song has really grown on me. It's my favorite single from this album so far. I just love the way Carrie sings the lines, "Fold your hands and close your eyes. Yeah, it's all gonna be alright" -- her vocals are strong but also gorgeous on that part of the song and I think the song has a catchy vocal arrangement. Sure, it's a little overproduced and I can see why it would be a little 'over-the-top loud' to some, but it's far from the worst I've heard in that regard over recent years.
"Dirty Laundry" is very good too but I'm glad this was the third single.

I've tried to have an open mind with Church Bells because honestly Heartbeat was the first Carrie single I have ever purchased. Love, love, love that song. But I can't get behind CB. It's a poor man's Fancy with some Goodbye Earl thrown in at the end. And usually I think her vocals are overblown and way too much but it's really the story that has me feeling "been there done that" every time it comes on.

There may be a couple other songs with a similar story, but that's nowhere near the amount of songs that are about partying, falling in love, where you came from, etc. "Been there done that" just seems like an odd criticism to me for a song that doesn't covered cliched ground.

Well to be fair, "falling in love" and "partying" are things that pretty much happen to everyone. Multiple times in their lives. Murdering people is not so common.

So are you all saying no one can ever do another song where an abused woman gets revenge? And even irrespective of that, "CB" gives the concept a new framework with the recurring bells motif.

Yes that is what I am saying. Because saying songs about love and partying that happen all the time is common in every style of music. When you have multiple songs about murdering someone, it sticks out. <sarcasm> My god, you're exhausting to have a discussion with.

At first you were saying since murder isn't common then it's understandable that murder songs would seem redundant, but now you are sarcastically saying murder songs stick out? Which is it?

It's not that hard to follow, I don't think. Maybe it is, I don't know. Murder songs are not that common (Fancy, Papa Loves Mama, etc). Carrie has done A LOT of murder songs. So that sticks out. I'm done though.

Wait...Fancy's a murder song? lol I think he got mixed up with "The Night the Lights Went out in GA" Another Reba murder song that is forgotten since it wasn't a single is "Bobby." And some could argue the RIP never was a single but should have been "Maggie Creek Road" was her latest murder song.

I always interpreted it as the mother opening the car door and pointing her pistol at the guy so that her daughter could escape. That would be enough to scare the sh!t out of anybody and convince them to leave your child alone forever! Lol! Murder would just be taking it way too far and make the song unbelievable...

That Vicki Lawrence classic was the #1 single in America 43 years ago this month, and it's still a classic; her then-husband Bobby Russell wrote it if memory serves.
There's no shortage of great murder songs in the annals of American music, be it country of any other genre.

I brought up Fancy as the iconic example of a girl doing what "she had to do" to get out of poverty. The murder part came in with Goodbye Earl. I guess growing up with Reba and that video, that's what I'll always compare with any song released in the same vein. Lyrically Church Bells doesn't do it for me, just like Smoke Break. I kind of like the production, Carrie's vocals aren't overly bombastic but it falls short. Not a station changer but I can't get into it either.

I like her vocal delivery on "Dirty Laundry" a bit more, but I'm happy we got one or the other as a single from this album. I would like to see "DL" & "Mexico" close it out.

Any chances of Carrie performing at the Billboard Music Awards next month? I'd love to see her perform this on the show.

Predictions as to when the video comes out? I feel like right about now would be a good time, but I have no idea lol. I am secretly hoping that they re-thought the live video and filmed a "real" one, but I won't hold my breath on that.
