hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=300382Monday, March 28, 2016 MOM DAY FOR ZAYN AND SARAH (UPDATE)ZAYN’s Mind of Mine—make that MIND OF MINE—is out, and it has been at the top of the iTunes album chart since release on Friday (3/25). That‘s precisely the same spot in which we expect to see the RCA release on the HITS Top 50 Albums Chart this Friday. The latest projections put the album at 120-130k in sales and 160-180k SPS.

I was expecting 100k so that's a solid opening. Hopefully he trends upwards since the album is actually really good.

I expected 200k+, but this is still great coming off of "PillowTalk". What's K''s prediction?

I was really expecting upwards of 200k, coming off all the talk of him in media, Pillowtalk, and him in general. But 150k is still pretty good.
Is he now confirmed a "singles" artists?

I think Mind of Mine will have long legs, maybe a year in top 100 or sth.

Cute numbers for K. Michelle. Tamar did 38k (43k SPS) so she's doing better.

I guess not terrible numbers for Zayn, but what happened to that 300k+ projection from earlier?

Early first week estimates does not make someone a singles artist. The album is not for children. Many parents are not allowing them to purchase a sex album. Furthermore, while many thought he would do better, 170k first week is nothing to sneeze about in 2016. Plus, it can still trend up.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7317815/zayn-no-1-debut-billboard-200-chartZayn Heading for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart With 'Mind of Mine'3/29/2016 by Keith Caulfield Zayn’s debut solo album, Mind of Mine, is heading for a No. 1 bow atop the Billboard 200 chart. Industry forecasters suggest the set, which was released on March 25 through RCA Records, could earn upwards of 160,000 equivalent album units in the week ending March 31. Of that sum, perhaps 120,000 could be pure album sales. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new April 16-dated chart (where Zayn may open at No. 1) is scheduled to have its top 10 revealed on Sunday, April 3. If Mind of Mine starts at No. 1, Zayn will succeed Gwen Stefani, who notched her first solo No. 1 album with This Is What the Truth Feels Like on the April 9-dated chart. Stefani, like Zayn, previously visited the No. 1 slot as part of a group: Stefani is the lead singer of the band No Doubt, which topped the chart with Tragic Kingdom. Zayn was formerly a member of the vocal group One Direction, which hit No. 1 with four albums (Up All Night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories and Four) during his time with the act. Mind of Mine was led by Zayn’s debut solo single “Pillowtalk,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February. The achievement made Zayn the first U.K. artist to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 with their first charted single. Other albums on course for a high debut on the new Billboard 200 chart include K. Michelle’s More Issues Than Vogue (with around 50,000 units or so), Asking Alexandria’s The Black ( 30,000 units) and Young Thug’s Slime Season 3 ( 30,000 units).

TOP 15: MIND POWER EDITION
RCA'S ZAYN continues to move toward the #1 spot on Friday's HITS Album Sales and SPS charts; his Mind of Mine has hit #1 at iTunes in 83 countries, btw. Let's take a look at how this and the week's other top sellers are likely to fare. *ZAYN (RCA) 115-120 album, 155-160k SPS *K. Michelle (WMG) 48-53k, 52-57k Adele (XL/Columbia) 38-43k, 47-52k *Asking Alexandia (Sumerian) 27-30k, 28-32k Joey + Rory (Gaither) 23-26k, 24-27k *Joe Bonamassa (J&R) 23-26k, 24-28k Chris Stapleton (Mercury Nashville) 22-25k, 28-32k *Young Thug (WMG) 21-24k, 24-28k twenty one pilots (Fueled By Ramen) 20-23k, 38-43k *Anthony Hamilton (RCA) 20-23k, 21-25k The Weeknd (XO/Republic) 17-19k, 34-38k Gwen Stefani (Interscope) 17-19k, 20-23k Justin Bieber (Def Jam) 16-18k, 47-53k Sia (Monkey Puzzle/RCA) 15-17k, 22-25k *Amon Amarth (Metal Blade) 15-17k, 15-17k Now 57 (NOW/Legacy) 15-17k *Debuts Zayn barely selling more than Shawn did last year (with no singles on the Hot 100) is terrible. Feels so weird to be praising 170k first week sales only 2 months after... you know. What happened 2 months ago? Or are you referring to Adele in November? If so, her opening sales are completely irrelevant. I think ANTI came out exactly 2 months ago and pulled similar numbers. Speaking of which, where's Rihanna in the midweek preview?

Zayn is for adults. Shawn is for kids. Target and Best Buy do not sell clean albums. Many parents will not buy an album that even has to be censored as well. Words like "piss" are not appropriate for an 8 year old and it is not censored.

Zayn has barely promoted. I'll be honest. I expected a little more. I think he would've met those expectations if he had a better promo plan.

If so, her opening sales are completely irrelevant. I am pretty sure he meant that other Columbia act that released an album in November, lol. But really, has anyone ever performed as well as or better than their former group with the first solo effort? Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone who has. It's not a realistic thing to expect. Of course, reaching that level of success can happen later, but that isn't something that can yet be determined from just one opening week.

It's not a realistic thing to expect. Of course, reaching that level of success can happen later, but that isn't something that can yet be determined from just one opening week. Cassadee pope ???? Jesse McCartney Oh wow, I had totally forgotten Jesse McCartney was in a band once. And that reminds me that Fergie got her start in Wild Orchid - but would that even count since we generally associate her with BEP? I wasn't really thinking of people who were in independent and/or commercially unsuccessful bands though (in that case I could add a whole bunch of people have technically succeeded their former group almost by default). So I guess I should amend my statement to say, has anyone ever been a member of a highly successful group, then performed as well as or better than the group with his or her first solo effort? Beyonce comes close - Dangerously In Love opened with 317k (the DC album preceding that, Survivor, opened with 663k) but matched Survivor's 4x platinum total and has since outsold Survivor, though I don't know if that happened during the album's run or in a later year through catalog sales. She has not outsold DC's biggest success, The Writing's On the Wall (8x platinum). If you take Tragic Kingdom out of the equation, Gwen's solo debut also managed to outdo all her former band's other albums, both in opening week and overall sales. Aside from that I think I have to go all the way back to New Edition - interestingly all but one of them actually performed better without each other than with. I can't find opening week numbers for any of them, since that wasn't such a big deal back then. But NE's best selling album was their last 1980s release, NE Heartbreak (3x platinum). Bobby was the original Zayn and left the group first, but had a misfire of a debut solo album; it was his second release, Don't Be Cruel, that ended up being the best-selling effort any NE guy put out. (Fun fact - Don't Be Cruel and NE Heartbreak were released on the same day; Bobby definitively won the race at 7x platinum.) After NE Heartbreak, the group broke up entirely and the other guys all released albums in 1990. BBD's Poison went 4x platinum, and Johnny Gill's self-titled release was 3x platinum**. Only Ralph Tresvant got left in the dust - his debut 'only' sold 1 million - but I'm guessing a little bit of fatigue had set in at this point, as his was the last of the bunch to be released and BBD and Johnny had stolen most of the thunder that spring. He also seems to be the only one who had no crossover action at all, which could explain the difference. **Technicalities - Johnny had two solo releases before joining NE as Bobby's replacement. BBD is not a solo act, probably b/c all three of those guys wisely ascertained that they wouldn't be very successful individually. NE is also the only group I can think of that spawned multiple big successes from its former members instead of just one breakout star, although it should be noted that none of them became long-term forces on that level. /nerd

:) We could add George Michael, who easily outpaced Wham with Faith. Maybe MJ after leaving the Jackson 5? Still, it seems like we're having to go decades to find a good correlation.

Michael Jackson was doing solo records while still being apart of the Jackson 5 so I wouldn't know where to put him. The one that I can say that went solo and was a bigger hit would be Lauryn Hill. Edit: What about Phil Collins? He took a short break from Genesis for a couple of years and his debut album was HUGE. I believe in return it actually elevated their stock even higher than before when he came back. Can failed groups be apart of this too because @antigonerising had me thinking of P!nk, Tinashe, Sevyn Streeter, Ne-Yo, Bobby Valentino, Missy Elliott, and a slew of other artists.
