MICHAEL'S TOP 40

Hey! I've been seeing all these personal charts for some time now, and I have decided I want to make one of my own. The ranking is based on my listening activity from this week and the six weeks before it. Every play is worth points, of which the amount decreases every week. A play from the second week is worth more than a play from the sixth week. I won't be doing any certifications, maybe later on I'll add a "Bubbling Under". I'm hoping the "system" I've created will work out, I'm really excited to see how this works out!

WEEK 44

I'm starting out with week 44, my first chart! It could be that you've already seen a chart of me, the one that's now removed. I've sort of optimized the way it works, so it reflects more what I have really been listening. And it shows, since the chart has changed: Just Hold Me by Maybon now has the #1 spot.

WEEK 45

Well, this is a quite drastic week. A lot of songs have gone down, or even left the chart. However, in the top 10 this is not the case, with two new songs entering the chart and other songs moving up. "Cruel" by Snakehips & ZAYN has become #1, going from #35 to #1. Other big climbers are "Fighting For Love" by Dami Im, going from #36 to #8 and "Lookin' Like That" by Jordan fisher, going from #37 to #9.

I know! I don't know if I should change the way my chart behaves since I actually listened to that song a whole lot this week, but debuting at #3 is maybe a little too high. But on the other side it does keep the chart fresh.

Out of curiosity, how do you keep track of plays? I like your way of using the last 6 weeks plays to keep the chart relatively steady. Do you track with last fm or something else?

Yeah! I use last.fm to track my plays. I then load the info into excel with last.fm's api because doing it manually is too much work.

WEEK 46

This week probably has even less tracks going up the chart than the week before. Oh well. Also a lot of Lorde showing up since I've been listening to her album again. "Cruel" by Snakehips & ZAYN stays at #1 while "Tennis Court" by Lorde takes up the spot of "Setting Fires" by The Chainsmokers & XYLØ, which last week was at #2 and now fell down to #3. The biggest jump this week has been made by Dave Silcox's going from #37 to #10.

I don't know to feel yet about songs entering this high, I need to make a compromise between keeping the chart representative and keeping it steady. I'll have to see, but I'm probably going to keep it this way.

WEEK 47

"Cruel" by Snakehips (ft. ZAYN), although not as much as before, keeps gaining points, ensuring it's #1 position for this week's chart. Both "Setting Fires" and "No Diggity" rose one position higher, after "Tennis Court" from Lorde fell from #2 to #14. With "Unsteady" falling out of the top 5 as well, we now have two new songs entering it: "Used To Have It All" by Fais, which was just waiting for the spot to become free again, and "Burnt Out". After reaching it's peak at #10 last week, we now see "Broken Promises" losing it's spot in the top 10 to "Body Moves" by DNCE, which re-enters the top 10. Underneath it we see "With Every Heartbeat" by Son Of 8 entering the chart, making it's debut at #12. A little down we also see "September Song" by JP Cooper entering at #20. All songs by Lorde got an expected big hit, at #31 & #32 we can see "400 Lux" and "Team" both going down ~12 spots. At the bottom we see 3 new songs entering the chart, and "By Your Side" by Jonas Blue and "24K Magic" by Bruno Mars re-entering. Question is if these two will make it to the next week, considering their peaks are #38 and #40.

This week will be "Cruel" it's 5th week at being #1, and looking at the points it'll probably be next week's too. JP Coopers "September Song" has reached #2, tackling "Setting Fires" and "No Diggity" from their steady position of last week, both go down one position. And while "With Every Heartbeat" seemed to rise really fast last week, it hasn't been able to get above the two. 

"Used To Have It All" recovers a little bit from last week, but not much and gets one position higher, the same goes for "Body Moves". Also, "Starboy" finally enters the chart! It was around 41-45 last week and it immediately has captured itself a spot in the top 10. It took a while to grow on me. Nathan Sykes it's song has to endure the rise of the two songs and "Starboy" it's debut, and falls to #9. It's expected to fall down even more next weeks. 

Other notable things are the debuting of Adele's "Send My Love (To Your New Lover), "Chameleon" and "You & Me" both getting their highest peak yet, the debute of "Shed A Light" and Sean Paul & Dua Lipa's "No Lie" and "Broken Promises" going down 12 spots from #15 to #27, making it the biggest loser.

WEEK 50, 2016

I am always a little amazed at how many songs go down compared to how many go up. Oh well. Anyways, "Cruel" for the 6th time has the #1 spot, be prepared to see this for another 2 weeks or so, after then it probably has lost enough points that it actually will have to compete with the songs below it. Adele's "Send My Love" jumps to #2, underneath we see "No Lie" making a huge ass jump to #6 and "Starboy" jumping to #2. This has broken up the what seemed to be steady top 3. I expected for "Setting Fires" and "No Diggity" to go back to their old positions. I've never been good with predictions though. 

The songs underneath it go down a little bit, not much, making room for the songs that rose. "You & Me" rises to #11, making a new peak, and then we see "I Got You" debuting. I expected it to chart last week, but it didn't, so now it gets in high. We see the going-down-just-like-three-spots kind of throughout the whole chart. "Shed A Light" only goes up one place to #20, right below it "Sit Still, Look Pretty" goes to #21, both now have a new peak. We have three more songs than last week that stayed at the same place. "By Your Side" by Jonas Blue got out of that awkward place where it has been a while in the chart but hasn't been higher than ~35, it's peak is now at #26. "Unsteady" and "Broken Promises" both get a big hit, going down 9 and 10 places. Then, at the bottom we see new songs debuting. "Adore" by Jasmine Thompson debuts at #30, Sia's "Never Give Up" (i love Sia's uplifting motivational songs) at #33 and, some people love it and some people hate it, but "Rockabye" also makes it's debut. At #40, that is. Martin Jensen also re-enters the chart with "Solo Dance", simultaneously making a new peak at #34. We'll see how this song will do.

So this chart is a little late, mainly because I had a test week and all the holidays. I didn't want to post it without the layout but I'm afraid I have to. I don't have much time right now and filling everything in takes a bit of time. I wonder if I can automate stuff in Excel but I honestly wouldn't know how to do that. But, a quick overview: steady top 3, "September Song" and "No Diggity" both rise and beneath it "No Lie" at a steady #6. "You & Me" still rises but "Setting Fires" and "Used To Have It All" are wearing off and are going down. There are a lot of songs that have been at the same place, maybe because of the fact I haven't been listening to music much because I didn't have a lot of time to do that. This means that a lot of songs have just been losing points, which makes it easier for newer songs to compete with the old ones, given that I listen to those more than the older ones. "Cruel" is still at #1, but losing points slowly. I maybe will change the opening posts to include some rules I've set for myself etc. so it gives you a better overview of how my chart exactly works.

Another just text chart. "Cruel" still one, that's pretty much a given by now. I have a feeling the #1 might be stolen by another song either next week or the week after it. Cruel only has ~150 points more than the other song, and since I listen to the other songs more, Cruel will probably be losing points while the others gain. Let's talk about the top 10: "Starboy" has worked his way up top the second spot. A bit late, looking at the charts of other people, but it took a while to grow on me. "No Lie" is something to keep your eye on: it's been gaining and gaining. Adele's song has gone down 2 positions, it probably won't make it's way back up again. "You & Me" instead rises from #7 to #5, probably making it's new peak? I don't know because I haven't formatted it this time so don't take my word for it. "No Diggity", "Body Moves" and "September Song" have gone down, while "Used To Have It All" goes up one position. There's this thing I've noticed on my chart where a song goes up really fast, then goes down a little, then goes back up again and then just goes down the chart. I guess it's a good representation of how I listen to music: be addicted to the song, it wears off, then I listen to it casually and slowly get enough of it. Marshmello's "Alone" comes in at #13, "Angel" by DVBBS at #18 and we also see two new The Weeknd songs on the chart: "Rockin'" and "Secrets". I've been casually listening to these so it took a while for them to even chart but here they are. The new song to look out for is "Taped Up Heart", I have a feeling it might be going up and up. Also let's have a moment of silence for "24K Magic" which hasn't been able to get above #33 and has left the chart once already. "Chameleon" at #11 and "Shed A Light" at #12 both have gone up and made a new peak for itself. "Sit Still, Look Pretty" too at #19, has gotten a new peak. I feel like Daya hasn't been really pushed in Europe, or I have just really overlooked her, but how can I be finding out about this song just, well now it's 6 weeks ago. 

I'm now going to find out a way to partially automate my chart so it doesn't take that much time anymore to make it. I literally don't know how to use Excel at all to be honest, so it's going to be a hassle. But I hope you liked it :) Took a bit of time before I could post this, I don't know how it's going to be with the next one because that one is exactly at New Years Eve, but I hope I will manage.

WEEK 01, 2018

We kick off 2017 with a new #1 song, "No Lie" by Sean Paul & Dua Lipa, while "Cruel" after 8 consecutive weeks at #1 drops to #4. It's safe place at the top isn't guaranteed anymore. A lot of new songs entered this week, notable are "Places" by Martin Solveig at #3 and "Ain't My Fault" by Zara Larsson at #6, both entering really high, with Zara Larsson now having two songs on the chart. You can pretty much say that the kinda steady top 10 in the last week of 2016 has been broken, with only "Cruel", "You & Me" and "Send My Love (To Your New Lover) surviving. We now see all the songs going down really fast. "Rockabye" also enters the chart again, this time a lot higher at #12. It's a messy week.
