With those 2 new songs, I wonder if he will do a Carrie Underwood and release at least one of them as a single?

With those 2 new songs, I wonder if he will do a Carrie Underwood and release at least one of them as a single? People have been releasing singles from greatest hits packages long before Carrie Underwood did it, lol. But considering the rumors about his status with the label during the flailing of his last single on the charts, seeing that Jake Owen is getting a greatest hits project release next month sent up a red flag for me that he's probably on his way out the door. I'm not expecting a single from that, especially since they're just now announcing it about a month before its release. I think the more likely scenario is that it's probably to fulfill the last of some contractual obligation before they cut him loose.

I still think it raises some red flags with this release, but Greatest Hits albums typically do not count toward contractual obligations for labels. Hence the reason that Curb kept releasing GH albums for Tim instead of a full studio album - it kept him on their roster longer. Maybe for some reason it will, but I think Sony is just cashing in on him one last time and he'll just end up getting dropped from here, not that this is fulfilling his contract in any way.

They actually do for a lot of contracts (they sometimes signify the end of a contract term too). But mainly, it's just that they can release as many as they want for as long as they own the master recordings. Jake could be leaving but if he was totally leaving, there wouldn't have been a PR push at all for this. It would've just come out. So my feeling is they'll release a single from this toward the end of the year with an impact date of early 2018. Why not? If it stiffs, the label can just move on and Jake can end up on Curb or a smaller indie label.

If they don't put out one of the new songs to radio in the next few weeks, I doubt that anything from it goes to radio. An announcement of its release a month ahead of the street date hardly indicates a "PR push," either. I'm still getting major 'Jake Owen has one foot out the door already' vibes from the whole thing.

I'm mind blown that "Startin' With Me" isn't on Jake's Greatest Hits. Usually labels frown upon any record of more than 11-13 tracks but "Startin' With Me" peaked at #6 on both Billboard and Mediabase and lasted over 40 weeks on the chart...it was a bigger record than "Yee Haw", "Eight Second Ride", "Days Of Gold" and "What We Ain't Got." You can argue first album (from 11 years ago) and it hasn't received any recurrent play past 2008-2009 but to leave it off a Greatest Hits, from an artist who only has nine Mediabase top 10 singles (eight on Billboard), is laughable.
This also spells the end to singles from Jake's American Love album. It's not surprising, considering the past two singles stalls in the 30's and I guess I'd expect one of the new songs to be a single. It's an effort to attract new excitement from programmers and fans with new songs, that hopefully recaptures momentum but I wouldn't be surprised if Jake exits Sony by 2018. His momentum is gone and he's an afterthought with Sony Nashville at this point.

I mean there are only 4 standout songs (imo) that I consider a “greatest hit”: Yee Haw, Days of Gold, What We Ain’t Got, and Eight Second Ride. I mean does anyone think Beachin is great. To be fair, I like all except for Beachin and American Country Love Song, but he really only has enough “great hits” on the album for an EP.

I mean probably the 1 million plus people who helped it become certified Platinum. Also the radio PDs who turned it into his second biggest radio hit (peaked at #26 on Billboard Hot 100, #1 on Hot Country Songs and Airplay chart). Not sure what criteria you are using, but that's a gigantic country hit If I ever did see one.

Yeah, Jake Owen's biggest hits are clearly "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" and "Beachin'", followed by the other singles from the Barefoot Blue Jean Night album. "Yee Haw" was the debut single of his career so I can understand why it's on here, but it wasn't that big of a hit, as it peaked at a modest #16. "Startin' With Me" peaked at #6, though, so I'm not sure why that one isn't on here. "Eight Second Ride" also missed the top 10, peaking at #11.
"Beachin'" was a huge #1 hit though, probably second only to "Barefoot Blue Jean Night".

The next Record Store Day being held on Black Friday (11/4/17) will include a major new project from one of country music's biggest legends as well as some other projects worth noting.
Bonafide country outlaw Waylon Jennings has left us with more music than we probably deserve, even after his untimely death. According to Record Store Day, Jennings was working on a collection of new material to be recorded for a prospective new album in the late 90’s. Before that album could be recognized, Jennings passed away, and while going through his fathers things, Shooter Jennings recovered a cassette tape labeled “New Stuff.”
A collection of new songs performed by Waylon and his guitar was what played from that tape. Shooter restored the tape and the outcome was a zealous collection of songs. New Stuff is a part of the special 2017 Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. The album will be on a limited colored 12” vinyl from label Black Country Rock. Waylon Jennings’ last recorded album was Goin’ Down Rockin’.
Other projects worth noting coming out on that day include:
- Eric Church - Mistress Named Music - 7" vinyl with two live tracks
- Willie Nelson - Spirit - LP - Originally released in 1996, Spirit is issued here for the first time on colored vinyl as a special Record Store Day Black Friday release. It comes newly remastered with a deluxe, gatefold, 'tip-on' uncoated jacket, this is a chance to own this unique album in its most beautifully presented form.
- Willie Nelson - Yesterday's Wine - LP- 1973's Yesterday's Wine has been long out of print on vinyl and is coming to record stores as part of the Friday Music 180g Audiophile Vinyl Series on burgundy vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve and with a poster depicting the cover art included.
- Gram Parsons - Live 1973 Featuring Emmylou Harris - LP - Live album by Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels was recorded at Sonic Studios in Hempstead, New York during a live radio broadcast from WLIR-FM.
- Chet Atkins - Guitar Blues - LP - Originally released on 78 in 1946 on Nashville's Bullet Records, this is the first ever vinyl reissue of Chet's very first release! Packaged in an envelope style picture sleeve with liner notes by Chet historian Pat Kirtley. Limited edition blue vinyl.
- Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson - The Bottom Line Archive Series: In Their Own Words - LP - An exclusive, limited 1000 quantity picture disc LP of select' tracks from Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson's 'In Their Own words with Vin Scelsa' set from 1994 at the famed Bottom Line in NYC.
- Gentle Giant: The Songs of Don Williams - Tribute LP - Williams' longtime producer and friend Garth Fundis have produced a tribute album, Gentle Giants: The Songs of Don Williams, featuring an all-star lineup of artists. Some of the artists on Gentle Giant include Jason Isbell, Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, Alison Krauss, John Prime and Garth Brooks. The 11-track album is being released on Slate Creek Records exclusively for RSD Black Friday 2017.

For an artist that has only released 17 singles, RCA could have put ALL Jake Owen's releases on the greatest hits album. Definitely the end of Owen's stay at RCA.

Just realized that "Startin' With Me" wasn't included on this, but "Days of Gold" is... Sure Sony, leave off one of Jake's best songs (and a top 10 hit) when he's only got like 10 hits in the first place. Wish "Summer Jam" were on this despite it not being a single. Still one of the best things Jake has ever done and it sure has a cult following.

Artist: Jimmy Wayne Album: Ruby Toons Label: Bea Hive Records Release date: November 1, 2017
Nearly a decade after his third country record and literally hundreds of thousands of miles under his feet from tirelessly campaigning for the rights of foster kids across the country, Jimmy Wayne has found a new way to deliver his message and continue his work, a family and kids album inspired by the puppy he adopted on his well-documented walk across America, Ruby.
Says Wayne, "The music isn't a comeback record. It's simply a companion piece to the book Ruby the Foster Dog. Each song title is woven throughout the book. It's another way to raise awareness about foster care in a fun way.'
The songs are infectious pop/hip hop anthems that share timeless messages of hope and courage wrapped up in the cutting edge music of our time.
“People don’t expect it from me,” he says of the upbeat pop coming from a known country hitmaker. “A lot of it comes from growing up in foster care. I was exposed to all genres of music. I have a cassette tape of me rapping when I was 13. It’s not something I just started doing. I grew up listening to it, all that music.”
“People really want to be entertained. Bill Anderson once told me, ‘It’s not a singing business. It’s not a guitar business. It’s an entertainment business,’” says the artist who has populated the country charts with such hits as “Do You Believe Me Now,” “Stay Gone” and “I Love You This Much” and “Paper Angels” — which became a book and a made-for-TV movie — and has graced the New York Times Best Seller list with the autobiographical Walk to Beautiful: The Power of Love and a Homeless Kid Who Found The Way.
“You have to evolve,” he shares. “I thought, ‘How can I get my message out about foster care? Am I going to be able to do that in a sad broken-hearted message?’ I’ve done that already. I did that in ‘I Love You This Much.’ So how can I reinvent the wheel and tell the story again like I did in Walk to Beautiful so that kids can understand and be inspired?
How do I keep this mission alive?”
He found the answer by looking through the eyes of Ruby, the rescue dog he adopted while walking from Nashville to Phoenix to raise awareness for children who were aging out of the foster care system. “When I started writing this ‘Ruby’ book I was so convicted. I could see the story. All I had to do is write it down,” he says.

What's the best place for that (I'm sure it's not this thread)? The guy was arguably on a track similar to what T. Rhett is on now, and then they just whiffed on singles. Was it just poor single releases? They went 4-4 with BBJN singles, and then have only really hit with Beachin and American Country Love Song.

Dear Someone | Tucker Beathard - November 17. Announced two weeks before the release date? Yeah, I think Big Machine is done with Tucker. I'd bet that this will largely be a digital-only release. And I don't think Tucker will be with the label much longer.
