We always talk about the "One Sweet Day" record when a song gets to 12 or so weeks at number one, but "Starboy" may be coming for that "Waiting For A Girl Like You"/"Work It" record of ten weeks at number two. Would you rather it get 11 weeks and take the record or sneak a single week at number one?

Will J. Cole have enough points for any top 10 hits? 4 days in and he's at around the 7-8 million mark for some tracks on Spotify (so maybe around 11-13 million for the week), and around 25-35k estimated sales.

It's just gonna be kind of lame and boring if BB remains #1 throughout the holidays. The formula change earlier in the year didn't change anything - just a few songs remain #1 each for like a billion weeks. It would be nice if people, well, just didn't stream the same songs for so long.

Lol, welp...Yeah as I've said before, streaming has shown me I was very naive about how much people want to hear the same songs over and over. But if a chart is supposed to measure interest and popularity, then people listening to the same song over and over should be reflected.

Yeah, the song I hear brought up most often when talking about weeks at #2 is "Work It" by Missy Elliott, which never hit #1.

But if a chart is supposed to measure interest and popularity, then people listening to the same song over and over should be reflected. Only people who are really into current music and or are chart geeks are really searching out for new music and are done with a song after a couple of months. I used to think I made the best mixes introducing people to album tracks, brand new singles etc. However that's not what most of them want to hear. lol. Friends always agree I have the most current music and know every song but they don't always want to hear my current mix of the week. lol. My best friend has no problem playing a song 2 years old like it just came out. Ugh...lol

And this is where the 'flaw' in measuring streams v. sales for chart purposes. So I have a balance of songs I buy and those I stream. If I stream a song multiple times for multiple weeks, it 'counts' for the charts for each week. However, if I buy a track, it counts once - for the chart week purchased, even though I may play that song multiple times for multiple weeks - the same as my streamed songs - on the same device no less.

Oh for sure; in a literal sense, sales reflect new interest and streams reflect sustained interest. That doesn't mean, as you said, that people can't continue to listen to music they bought, but at the same time someone could download a song and only listen to it 2 times. Until we can measure every time someone listens to a song in any format - which, frankly, is a scary thought because of what else it implies - then all formats will have a 'flaw' for sure.

The thing is the finances (and associated chart points) to consider. When you buy a song, that's a couple of cents of revenue for the label (40-70 if memory serves) and it's not like you pay to continue owning said song. With streaming, you contribute a fraction of the money ($0.003 to $0.008, again if memory serves) per play on average with the caveat that you do not own the track to get free plays off. As streams become the dominant form of online consumption of music, the issue of sales being a one-time deal will become even less of an ideological issue, unfortunately for some of us.

Can one of you chart enthusiasts and experts help with a question, por favor? I tried to google for info but didn't see anything concrete....does it matter what a YouTube video is categorize as (ex. Music, Entertainment, Comedy..etc) for billboard to count it as streams? Or does it need to be categorized strictly as "music"? I found two instances where I believe points were counted by Billboard and the videos were not categorize as "music" but instead "comedy" or "entertainment"....Harlem Shake and Wrecking Ball viral videos. Does anyone have confirmation as to what is Billboard's criteria when they count YouTube videos?

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7625408/zayn-taylor-swift-i-dont-wanna-live-forever-top-10-hot-100-debutZayn & Taylor Swift's 'I Don't Wanna Live Forever' Headed for Top 10 Hot 100 Debut12/16/2016 by Gary Trust The new collab from "Fifty Shades Darker" should make a top 10 start, while launching as the week's top-selling song. A lack of both an official video & a presence on Spotify in its first week, however, will likely keep it from No. 1 upon its start. Zayn and Taylor Swift's new single "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" looks set to debut in the top 10 of next week's Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Dec. 31). Based on industry forecasts, "Forever" could sell between 175,000 and 200,000 downloads in its first week (ending Dec. 15; the song arrived at midnight on Dec. 9, so the tracking week covers its first seven days of availability). Such a sum should easily make "Forever" the best-selling song of the week. The song is from Fifty Shades Darker, starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. The film, the follow-up to 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey, hits theaters Feb. 10, the same day its soundtrack will be released. Per Billboard projections according to preliminary Nielsen Music data, "Forever" should also draw more than 25 million in radio audience and more than 3 million U.S. streams for the week. Notably, no official video for the song has yet been released, and the track, while available on Apple Music, Tidal and other subscription-only streaming services, was withheld from Spotify during the tracking week, both of which will impede its chances for an even higher entrance on the Hot 100. However, already looking ahead to the second chart week for "Forever" (on the Hot 100 dated Jan. 7, 2017), the song is now on Spotify as of Friday (Dec. 16), while a lyric video was released Dec. 15 on the official Fifty Shades YouTube channel. As previously reported, "Forever" debuted on the Dec. 24-dated Pop Songs airplay chart, at No. 25, following its first three days of tracking. (The airplay chart tracking week runs Monday-Sunday, while sales and streaming data follows a Friday-Thursday period.) Check Billboard.com on Monday (Dec. 19), when highlights of the new Hot 100's top 10 will post. The entire chart, and all rankings, will update the following day. Additional reporting by Silvio Pietroluongo, Keith Caulfield & Kevin Rutherford

Can one of you chart enthusiasts and experts help with a question, por favor? I tried to google for info but didn't see anything concrete....does it matter what a YouTube video is categorize as (ex. I'm pretty sure it has to be categorized as music. Harlem Shake and Wrecking Ball were probably before they implemented that rule. It's a little more nuanced than that. It's not that Billboard only counts it if it's categorized as music, so much as YouTube reports it to Billboard if it's categorized as music. So, with something like "Harlem Shake" or "Wrecking Ball", that has a bunch of user-generated content that uses it in the background, while the user videos might not be classified as music, the Content ID system still tracks the use of the content to these user-generated videos, and the parent material is still classified as music, and all of its play across however many videos are aggregated as such. Here's an article Billboard ran during the time "Harlem Shake" was still huge that gives info about the Content ID system. All of that said, as with many things, I'm sure, if ever there's grey area, the power that be at Billboard just make judgment calls, and as we've seen with other such calls, there can be inconsistencies. But the categorized as much thing does seem to be the general rule they follow.

I would assume the Corden video is similar to, say, the Chatroulette videos. Do those cont? The difference here from previous Corden videos is this one is a single song versus a collection of songs.
