You did WHAT to Tracie Spencer now? :sip2: We gave her tender kisses, then told her bye baby, bye babyTracie is one of those artists whose biggest Hot 100/pop chart success isn't her biggest success within her niche - not necessarily a rarity but I always find it a kind of odd quirk when things like that happen. Her only two top forty hits on the Hot 100 were This House (#3 peak) and the quasi-comeback single "It's All About You (Not About Me)" (#18), but her two biggest hits on the r&b charts were Tender Kisses (#1) and Love Me (#2). TH and IAAY(NAM) had to settle for lower top 10 peaks there.

Back in a few to hit it with the next reveal! hint: Az Paynter is known on Pulse for being something that our #30 act is not.

#30-26 are, statistically, probably the most boring top five set in the rankdown, but I'll try to dress them up anyway. - It Takes Two is the only song of the group that was ever in danger of being bottom 10, but it pulled itself out of that quagmire fairly early and never looked back. Only two songs skimmed the top 20 - and I do mean skimmed. #28 left the top 20 as soon as I received the first submission besides my own, and #27 hovered at #20 on the dot for all of two submissions. - #27 also has the 7th highest sd of the rankdown so it has that going for it I guess. But everything else was pretty much middle of the road. - At this stage in the reveals, it's no longer notable that each song will take one to three top 10 ranks with it. Some people will be disappointed but there are not any big shockers here IMO. --------- - The act at #29 was known for being big in one way and small in another, but their final place in this rankdown was not at the far end of any spectrum. - The song at #28 appeared somewhere else before it was released on the artist's own album, which actually narrows that one down quite a bit. - #27 is a group, but probably not in the way you think. (or were thinking, until you rread this hint lol) - I asked Janhova's Witness in RT which song he preferred by the artist at #26 b/c he had the album cover as an avi at the time I was picking songs, and that hoe never responded! So rude!

Welp, no one's around to guess at anything so I suppose I'll just throw these out there.

Coming tomorrow: #25-21 - this is a much more interesting bunch than our 30-26 set; the highest, eighth-highest, and tenth-highest SD's of the rankdown will appear here. Opposites attract, except when they don't and then they just cancel each other out for a spot smack dab in the middle apparently. Hopefully no one is too touchy about it. - the song with the highest SD will also be taking our first #1 losses - two of them - with it - if I didn't know any better, I would have sworn one of the above artist's visuals was directly inspired by Diamonds and Pearls. However, that is not the case, as the song and video were released before D&P was. - Arguably the biggest star of the rankdown will see their season come to an end. It's not the hugest surprise, but I did think this one would make it into the top 20. - Also leaving, the original Carly Rae Jepsen (in the sense of being branded a one hit wonder by most people even though they technically are not). Hell, even I had forgotten about the other hit(s?). But as the saying goes, men lie, women lie, numbers (on the charts) don't lie. - And a few bonuses - only a couple of people sent me any so I almost forgot to do them, but it works out anyway because top half of the rankdown is a convenient spot to start inserting those.

Who the hell ranks "It Takes Two" in the bottom 10?
Vanessa Williams is smokin' hot. No wonder she won the Miss America pageant and then had it revoked for appearing in Penthouse. Where's a drooling emoticon when you need it?

Never liked the Heavy D track. The first thing I think about regarding that Vanessa Williams single is how ugly all of her dancers in the video are.

Biggest differences in these reveals: 35. Live and Learn (3): Awwww... :'( This was a personal favorite back in the day (top 5), after I heard it in AT40. The pre-chorus is quite infectious, and the melody in the chorus also works. Why so low here??!! 33. I Like the Way (22): I liked this one enough, but considered it more of a smooth R&B song. Cool laid-back song with nice harmonies, too. 32. This House (20): This was a bop, but as I said before, this sounded more like dance pop ala Cathy Dennis, a style that I really liked 30. It Takes Two (16): I sort of gave extra points to this song due to its huge longevity and becoming a song that has remained popular for decades and used in multiple opportunities 28. Round and Round (47): This one was just too meh for me. 27. Now That We Found Love (7): Oh, my! I LOVED this one since I heard it. It had this high energy, techno, dance vibe that I really liked, plus it sounded different from any other song at the time 26. The Right Stuff (42): This was ok, but almost a second-rate version of a Paula or Janet song. She looked great, though :)

"Opposites attract" was a red herring - it was simply a play off the title Nite and Day. "hopefully no one is too touchy about it" was the Sensitivity hint. I thought it was interesting that Ralph spent more time in the top 10 than Al did (and in fact, was ranked higher for the first two thirds of submissions) even though Al is the one who had four top 3 ranks, including two #1s. Al was very close to pulling out a top 20, but Juanca's bottom five rank killed it at the last minute.

I referred to Shanice as the original Carly Rae Jepsen because she has landed on one-hit wonder lists several times, but I'm sure most people have long forgotten her second top 5 hit, Saving Forever For You from the Beverly Hills 90210 soundtrack. It ended at #33 on the 1992 year-end chart, so that #4 peak wasn't a fluke. But it got overshadowed in the long run by Brian McKnight and Vanessa Williams' Love Is (also from that soundtrack). Likewise, her other top-10 r&b peaks are pretty much paid dust in favor of folks' insistence on declaring their faulty memories more important than recorded stats.
On the r&b side, Shanice is more often compared to Tracie Spencer because they had such a similar trajectory - two teenagers with a handful of late '80s/early '90s r&b hits, followed by a prolonged absence from the charts, and then a one-song 'comeback' in 1999 before finally being put back in their '80s/'90s time capsules and not heard from again. Tracie's two pop hits are both fairly equally remembered, however (well, inasmuch as anyone remembers Tracie Spencer) so I don't see her mistakenly labeled as a OHW much.
As for Summertime, to this day I cannot wrap my mind around the same Philly guy riding around on the back of a trailer with patio furniture also being Will Smith, permanent A+++ list movie star slash Jada Pinkett's swinging husband slash sex dungeon basement owner slash Jaden Smith's daddy. It's all just so unfathomable. He is easily the hugest celebrity on this rankdown, but if it weren't for his acting career I'm not sure people would really even 'remember' most of his Fresh Prince hits much. Summertime was destined to be an urban classic no matter what though.

I was a little obsessed with ”Round And Round” as a kid. I can’t get enough of it today, especially Prince’s background vocals.
“I Love Your Smile”, “Summertime”, and “I Like The Way” are just timeless childhood bops.

singingrulebritannia IDK why but I completeley forgot to 'warn' that #22 would also be taking a #1 rank with it. My bad! It absolutely deserved betterr IMO; I wrestled with leaving it out of my top 10.

Ky got this guess correct. Karyn misses the top 20 by just 0.267 points. This is another song that I struggled with leaving out of my top 10, and I'm not really sure why it ended up falling into the lower teens for me. I should have pulled an Az Paynter and changed my rankings after the fact to boost it lol. But that would have knocked the #20 song out (and no way was I going to knock that song out of the top 20) so here lies Romantic's final resting place. From a pure production/arrangement standpoint, this is one of the most masterful pieces of musical art I have ever heard. From the instrumental layering to the way it literally riffs itself into four bridge sections and three variations of the hook at the end, without once feeling cluttered. I wish Karyn had gotten more time in the r&b spotlight. She was talented, gorgeous, and kind of occupying her own lane; but unfortunately she was coming up just as the winds were changing. NJS was being replaced by an even heavier urban sound and r&b ballads were mostly being supplanted by bombastic-vocal crossovers.

I will avoid saying 'tomorrow' this time. Coming up next: - the song that simply had to be in this rankdown's top 20. Any other result would have been simply unacceptable. - The second time around for this act was much better than the first, even though it didn't really last that long. - another New Edition-related act. - if Alicia Keys were to participate in this rankdown, I would probably guess that this song would be her #1. - a tie! (The first of two, in fact.) One of these acts is already known for being shady in other ways so it should come as no surprise that their fleeting success was also procured by unscrupulous means. The other act established more of a lasting name for themselves, though until recently it had been a good while since we heard from them.

Optional: When submitting your rankdown you may also submit up to ten of your favorite NJS songs that didn't appear on this list. Songs with the most mentions will be featured during the rankdown. The only rule here is that the song cannot be a ballad. Hey Cynthia, remember this? I hope I was not the only one who submitted extra songs.

Only you and one other person I think bothered to send any extras in so I''d more or less forgotten about it. I suppose I could still scatter a handful of songs between the remaining reveals tho.
