1. Rank all the songs from most to least favorite 1-50 and PM me your list
2. For this rankdown, there will be no points system. If I receive more than 20 submissions, the songs will be ranked based on median score, then average, then st. dev. If two songs are still tied after all that, I'll leave the tie as is. If I receive less than 20 submissions, average and median score will be given reverse priority in the ranking system.
3. Let me know if you want/do not want to be tagged. You do not have to be tagged to participate. Feel free to tag anyone you think might be interested!
4. The current deadline is Friday April 6, 2018 at 11:59 pm CST.
Optional: When submitting your rankdown you may also submit up to ten of your favorite NJS songs that didn't appear on this list. Songs with the most mentions will be featured during the rankdown. The only rule here is that the song cannot be a ballad.
On November 27, 1987, Keith Sweat released Make It Last Forever, a debut that is now recognized as the world's first New Jack Swing album. For the next several years, New Jack Swing would dominate the airwaves, merging smooth r&b melodies and harmonies with hip-hop sensibilities. While Teddy Riley is typically credited as the architect of NJS, he is by no means the only producer who was a part of it. Throughout this rankdown I'll talk about NJS's history, the artists and producers who helped mold the new sound or r&b, and how NJS indelibly marked r&b and hip-hop music as a whole.
I have put together a carefully crafted list of 50 NJS songs - some classics, some less-mentioned-but-still-great hits, and one personal favorite that I threw in just for fun. No artist appears more than once here. I did my best to avoid rankdown repeats - at the time I put this list together I believe only one song here appeared in a previous rankdown, although I don't know if that still applies now that more time has passed - but at the same time the vast majority of these songs should be familiar to all r&b heads and even several pop fans. All but four of the songs included were a top 10 hit on the Hot 100, R&B/Hip-Hop, and/or Rap charts; 33 were Hot 100 top 10s. NJS was an extremely popular sound that crossed over many times and at its peak began influencing even the biggest pop stars' music.
There are a few omissions that, if you are familiar with NJS, are pretty notable. I had my reasons for not including those songs/artists in this rankdown but they will be given proper attention during the reveal! I'll also note that there are no ballads on this rankdown - I might do a NJS ballads rankdown some time in the future, but for now I wanted to highlight the more energetic side of NJS.
