A couple of extras for tonight. newpower sent these in. Patti showing the young folk how it's supposed to be done: Yo, why does ol' boy on the right in this Casanova video look like a cross between Kenan Thompson and a happy pug? And he was clearly the Michelle of the group b/c very quickly it becomes apparent that the camera tried to avoid him as much as possible so we would not notice him struggling with those ~complex~ dance moves lolol. I contemplated including this one in the rankdown, but its NJS status was kinda debatable, as it predates Make It Last Forever by a few months.

An absolute favorite! Singing for days and days! I could have seen this in this RD regardless.

NOO to Romantic being this low!! :(( Very solid song, with delicious instrumentation and hooks for days, plus it sounds lush, smooth, and sexy.

I have no idea why I'm awake rn but since I'm up I figure I might as well reveal #20. If the birth song of NJS had not made top 20 of its own rankdown I would have cancelled this whole thing! Thankfully only one person tried it with a bottom 10 and it hung out in the lower teens for the majority of its time.

I lied to newpower earlier, I just thought to double-check and there were actually two other people who sent in some extras. So let's feature a couple of those! This first one is from Glove Slap. I had initially planned to do a whole write-up about Prince and how ironic it was that he is rarely associated with NJS when, due to his influence on Teddy and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, he's really the grandfather of the whole thing...but then I got busy (or lazy, depending on what day it was) and never made time to write it, so Glove Slap having good taste will have to suffice. *shameless plug* I'm opening the Prince rankdown after I finish this one so it's best I save all my Prince energy for that anyway. Ky immediately became one of my favorite people of the year when he sent this song. When I lived in DC with my best friends they used to make fun of me - and still do occasionally - b/c I was OBSESSED with this song and every time they came downstairs this would be what they heard. I swear I was listening to other music too! They just had bad timing lol. Or maybe the NJS gods were just trying to tell them to get their shit together, I dunno.

Just realized, we will be losing only one #1 rank among the #20-#15 songs. However, that rank is coming up next so everyone get your salt ready!

I take it no Shalamar fans took part in this rankdown lol; that hint was pretty easy. Jody started out as a dancer on Soul Train, and her popularity stood out enough that Don Cornelius picked her and fellow dancer Jeffrey Daniel to be original members in the group. But they were mostly confined to the r&b chart (The Second Time Around was Shalamar's only Hot 100 top 10 with any line-up), and even within r&b, their chart status was more on the moderate side. Tension and egos led to Jody and Daniel leaving Shalamar in 1983. Jody moved to England and did some various one- or two-off projects for a few years before coming back to the States and jumpstarting another brief moment of stardom as a soloist. Although Shalamar would technically outdo her in terms of longevity, she would well outpace Shalamar's commercial peak, achieving six Hot 100 top 10s and winning Best New Artist at the Grammys. Didn't even realize until I was uploading this image that Jody was almost never in contention for a top 20 spot. She didn't make it there until the last two submissions, and even that was less to do with those last two people pulling Jody up and more to do with them ranking something else low.

Ky immediately became one of my favorite people of the year when he sent this song. And you immediately became one of my favorites when you started this rankdown! Sad to see Jody Watley out. Backing up a few, I wish Karyn White woulda lasted a little longer too. Edit: also meant to guess that Pebbles must be the unscrupulous means slot. I'm surprised she's made it this far tbh, but it's a great song.

#18 has 3 top 10 ranks - all at #6. That's not creepy at all. #6 is also the highest rank the song achieved during the submission period, as well as the rank it originally started with (I'm one of the #6 ranks). I have to admit this was a heartbreak.

I Want Her is about 1 of maybe four songs I can actually tolerate Keith Sweat's voice on!
Also, Jody Watley needs some RESPECT put on her name because that woman has put in WORK for decades and been a major influencer in and contributor to black music and fashion.

I should try whittling this down to the top 10, eh? Doubt too many people are or will be around since it's a US holiday, but here is 17 to start the day off.

A few extras before I reveal the two songs tied at #15. The first is from Ky - this one is more along the lines of Patti's Feels Like Another One. Minus a rap feature though, this one kind of flies under the radar as an out-and-out NJS song. But it does show how well the NJS spirit holds up with a 'classic' r&b voice on top of it. The second artist was mentioned by both ky and newpower. Ky suggested Can't Stop while newpoweR went with the song below, Heat of the Moment. After 7 is a group that I think a lot of people (self included) unfairly forget about when talking about NJS b/c the group is much more strongly associated with their ballad hits. Someone in the YT comments for this pointed out that the arrangement here bears some similarities to Bobby Brown's On Our Own. One more extra from Glove Slap. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I have virtually no childhood memories of Sheena Easton as a solo artist, which is insane. The problem is I have definite recollections of hearing her songs at one time or another, but not of her name outside of Sign 'o the Times - I basically wrote her off in my mind as one of Prince's light skinneded harem girls smh - so I'm always having to look her stuff up real quick to refresh my memory.

Tale of two cities - these songs found themselves at the same place despite one having one of the 10 highest s.d.'s and the other having on of the 10 lowest. There will be one more tie inside the top 10.

Babyface’s uptempos were all similar. lol. I always play “On Our Own” and “Heat Of The Moment” back to back. Sometimes I’ll throw Pebbles’ “Giving You The Benefit” in the mix.

Holy s**t Motownphilly was #1 right before my ballot
That's one I thought I'd have higher but this list was too good so it kept getting pushed down

I'm about to go at some bbq! I'll be back to this rankdown later with a full stomach and the last two songs to miss the top 10.
Four #1 ranks will be taken out with these two. #12 will also be our final high standard deviation - it and Motownphilly are the only two non-top 10 songs that actually briefly flirted with being #1 (although Motownphilly spent a lot more time in the top 10 overall).

I'm glad it at least made top 20 though. And there's not anything ahead of it that I think doesn't deserve to be there...although I guess that's easy for me to say when I only disliked 3 songs and don't have anything below #34 remaining lol.

I ranked a lot of classics low because there were so many songs I love on this last. I'm sad to see It's No Crime go, but glad to have my top 2 in tact. Loving the extras... After 7's voices are amazing. I love the whole Sheena Easton The Lover In Me album.
