John Mayer is a really talented guy, I hear New Light almost everytime in radio on my country, and he's known for being in a relationship with both Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. The question is, did we overestimating his star power, or did we underplaying his song?
He only have 7 top 20 songs (No Such Thing [#13], Your Body is a Wonderland [#18], Daughters [#19], Waiting on the World to Change [#14], Say [#12] Beat It {with Fall Out Boy} [#19], and Who Says [#17]) and he got no top 20 hits since 2009. Heck, his duet with Taylor Swift, Half of My Heart, is only at #25, while Who You Love, his duet with Katy, only reach #48.
So, is John Mayer an unlucky music guy, or did we praised him a bit too much?

Heβs seen as one of the greater guitar players to emerge this century I think, and has recorded a lot of music but not all of it lends itself to support from pop radio or fans of pop music. His range of success in terms of hot music still extends to nearly a decade if not more so Iβd say he did quite well.

Besides the Beatles, John Mayer is my favorite artist ever. His first 4 albums are all in my all time top 20 and I've enjoyed the others a lot as well. "New Light" and "Still Feel Like Your Man" from last year are great too so he's been putting out great music for over 15 years. And "New Light" has proven that he can still get a decent hit.
Having said that, it is of no surprise to me that he hasn't had more Pop/Hot 100 success. Sure, I wish some of his songs had done a little more ("Half Of My Heart," "Bigger Than My Body"), but then again, others did better than I expected ("Daughters," "New Light"). He's not Justin Timberlake or BeyoncΓ©. His sound doesn't lend itself to massive chart success like that. At the same time, I believe he's been much more successful than his chart history would suggest. He's somewhere in the middle and I'm sure he's fine with that. Amazing musician

He's a decent guitar player, but that's literally all he has.

He sold like 12 million albums domestically in the first decade of his career. He's a coffee shop artist that happened to have a string of multi-platinum releases. Although I do wish he didn't nosedive so much in terms of relevancy, his career has been more than fine.
