What are you surprised is still in? Both Steve Azar songs still being in is a massive surprise to me. I could easily envision them having been knocked out in like the #70s.

Oh this is fine. I can’t stand Blake, but I do really like this song. I don’t actively listen to it by any means, but it’s a great song. I either find Blake boring or terrible the past decade or so but the singles from his first three albums were really good for the most part. That’s the Blake I miss.

Carolyn making the top 20 is shocking to me.
I’m going to assume that song has a very low deviation. Not much passion either way (although i am a huge fan)

I can see “Waitin’ On Joe” since it missed the top 20 at radio (great song) but no way on “I Dont Have To Be Me (‘Til Monday)” — I knew that would make the top 30 at least before this rankdown started.

I saw him open for Toby Keith back in 2003 and really enjoyed him and his first albums but then shit hit the fan. His music got crappier and so did his personality. Now he’s cocky and generic.

OK, so I just missed like, the last 12 of these or whatever, but some scattered thoughts:
- "Mendocino County Line" is a song I heard for the first time when doing this rankdown. I should have had it higher.
- "Life Happened" is the kind of multi-layered country song that doesn't get written anymore, let alone becomes a moderate hit.
- Wow, I ranked Emerson Drive that low? To be honest, I just find the song alright more than have any active dislike for it. I should have had it higher.
- "I'm Gonna Getcha Good," polarizing or not, well ... got me good!
- Chris Cagle had some good, underrated stuff back in the day.
- I don't know how I ranked "Beautiful Mess" that low either. Another song I think is alright.
- I literally can't remember how "Forgive" goes, to be honest.
- Normally, I'd advise people to stay away from covering a George Jones song, but come on, this was perfect for Blake.

Alan and Kenny have majorly overstayed. Thankfully I imagine Alan won't last much longer since I know I'm not the only one who tanked his song, lol.

Blake is awful but I love a handful of his older songs for sure, and "Ol Red" is definitely one of them! It's amazing! Still actively listen to it.

I am shocked Kenny made it this far because he has his detractors, and I am not complaining that 'Waitin On Joe' is still in (LOVE that song) but I expected like a #75 finish for that.
I think its a little surprising that Red Ragtop is still in as well.
Does SHeDAISY have a shot at the Top 15?
I think these are next George Strait – “Living And Living Well” Kenny Chesney – “The Good Stuff” Rascal Flatts – “These Days” Tim McGraw – “Red Ragtop” Steve Azar – “Waitin’ On Joe”

I think the biggest surprise is "Mine All Mine" still being alive. That song didn't even do that great in the SHeDAISY rankdown (finished 7th if I remember correctly). It's a very good song, but in a year this strong I didn't expect it to make the top 20.

Can we PLEASE get rid of "Red Ragtop" ugh that is way worse than "Unbroken" (which I also don't care for) but it has LONG overstayed and "Unbroken" should have placed higher tbh.
<3 @ SHeDAISY still being in this! I should have ranked my girls higher but.... even tho I love the song, "Mine All Mine" is not one of my fav favs from them. It didn't make my top 10 in their RD remember lol.

I agree but Pulse is full of SHeDAISY stans so songs like “Drive” which were much more impactful get tanked...and speaking of Alan I’m sure “Where Were You” is on borrowed time although if it were me it would make it to the top 5. I’m also surprised that Steve Azar’s “Waitin’ on Joe” has made it this far but nonetheless happy to see him have two songs still in at this point. “Red Ragtop” is another song I didn’t see making it this far but I think might leave before the top 20.

I don’t even think it’s an age gap I just think we connect with and respond differently to music and lyrics.

#20. Alan Jackson - "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)"
Total Points: 829 Average: 39.4 Year Released: November, 2001 Radio & Records Peak: #1 Billboard Peak: #1 Rankings:Andy - 2 Cody Wants Out... - 2 zack97 - 2 zaclord 🌈 - 3 fearlessarrow - 4 tim - 4 kw9461 - 8 someguy - 10 toomuchboy - 11 castleoblivion26 - 14 bboat11 - 20 sabre14 - 24 austin - 37 Kanenrá:ke - 45 bigfan101 - 46 CoJoFan - 92 George Strait Junkie - 94 ClevelandRox - 97 ChicaCherry콜라 - 100 LBTrocks - 105 .indulgecountry - 109 Following: gonecountry"Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" was the lead single off Alan Jackson's Drive album in November of 2001. Alan Jackson wrote it after the events of the September 11th terrorists attacks. It was released to radio after its debut on the 2001 CMA Awards, where Alan changed plans to perform "Where Were You" less than a week before the show. Stations started spinning the live recording immediately and it climbed to #1 in just six weeks and spent 5 weeks at #1. It won the Song of the Year at the ACM's and CMA's, along with winning Best Country Song at the Grammy's the following year.
Alan actually had just released "It's Alright to Be a Redneck" off his When Somebody Loves You album two weeks before "Where Were You" was debuted but Sony quickly changed plans after the song was debuted.
This song doesn't hit me nearly as hard as it did back then but I still think it's a great song. Doesn't take a political side and focuses on different human emotions many were feeling after September 11th. It's not a song I would ever go out of my to listen to but I still think it's one of the few times an artist's abilities shine through to the fullest extent, with Alan writing this one by himself so quickly after an event like that.
Here's something crazy, if the three rankings in the 100's were taken away, this would have been #1 in this rankdown, or at least top 5 factoring in other song's points being affected.

Yeah, I knew "Where Were You" wouldn't last, but happy it made the top 20. Seeing that song performed live at the CMA Awards just weeks after 9/11 was one of the most powerful moments I've ever experienced as a country music fan.
Morgan Freeman was in the video for "Waitin' on Joe", so that's next. :'(

#19. Steve Azar - "Waitin' On Joe"
Total Points: 827 Average: 39.3 Year Released: July, 2002 Radio & Records Peak: #26 Billboard Peak: #28 Rankings:sabre14 - 2 kw9461 - 4 Andy - 5 austin - 13 castleoblivion26 - 16 zack97 - 18 bigfan101 - 19 George Strait Junkie - 23 someguy - 26 fearlessarrow - 30 Kanenrá:ke - 43 tim - 44 toomuchboy - 50 LBTrocks - 51 CoJoFan - 58 .indulgecountry - 60 ClevelandRox - 65 zaclord 🌈 - 67 Cody Wants Out... - 69 bboat11 - 77 ChicaCherry콜라 - 87 Following: gonecountry "Waitin' On Joe" was the second off Steve Azar's album of the same name in July of 2002. It spent 21 weeks climbing, peaking at #26 on R&R in December. Azar wrote the song himself. The music video features a opening monologue from actor Morgan Freeman.
Azar's first record deal came back in 1996 with River North Records and he charted two singles on Billboard. 5 years later, Azar signed with Mercury Nashville and released "I Don't Have To Be Me ('Til Monday)". After his single "Doin' It Right" only peaked at #45 on R&R in 2005, Steve left UMG by the end of that year. He charted several more times, including "You Don't Know a Thing" off Midas Records Nashville and his own personal label Dang Records. He hit the top 40 twice more in 2009 and 2010 with "Moo La Moo" and "Sunshine."
This song is pretty close to phenomenal. It's such a great story, melody and the production is perfect. I thought about putting it at #1 tbh. Nobody really tanked this, so that helped it for sure. Thrilled this one got to the top 20!

Where Were You was by far the hardest song to rank in this whole rankdown. It's impact in the moment was so huge, but today it's not something I go out of my way to listen to. Still though, it's such a raw, powerful song that I had to bump it into my top 10. I knew there would likely be a gap on this song (between those who lived the moment and those who came to know this song after the fact), but it's still jarring to see no rankings between 46 and 92. Deserved better, but at least it didn't get tanked out of the top 20.

I'm amazed--and happy--this song made it to the top 20. I just love this song, it really hits me still. Most of us do remember that day vividly. I still remember reading Sailor Moon manga in my room after being dismissed from school early, to try not to think about it while my parents were watching the TV coverage.
