Mariah is done in the R&B field. The panel will not nominate her. Why though? She could probably get in if she really wanted it and put in the effort to win people over. But at this stage in her career it is doubtful that Mariah would actively network and campaign for votes - you can nominate her on her merits or you can not - and she already was never strongly connected within those inner Grammy circles as it was. She was routinely snubbed at her '90s peak, handed a few awards off-air for her '00s peak, and hasn't been nominated for her own material since DFAU in 2007 (and I believe that might be the last time she bothered attending too now that I think about it...she hardly even goes to the parties I think?). So I wouldn't hold my breath for something to happen for Caution now, though it would be nice. Honestly, it would be weird to me as a lamb if she suddenly started caring. Toni is clearly in good with several people in those r&b circles. I was a little surprised at her nods this year but I don't find it the weirdest thing. Lalah Hathaway is another one who gets nominated just for showing up. Lalah is on a Grammy committee or two, so her connections likely run deep.

I see 21 Savage absolutely sweeping the rap categories, and Nothing Breaks Like A Heart for Best Pop Duo and Record Of The Year.

She has publicly dissed the Grammys for not recognizing her enough times. www.newsweek.com/how-many-grammys-does-mariah-carey-have-836370Most times I kind of understand why she lost. She was always up against some formidable albums and songs. I think the fact that she's past her commercial peak is probably a bigger strike against any possible nods though. And the album came way too early for it to stay on the voter's radar without a hit.

Sometimes, especially in the recent years theyβve asked her about it and her answer is she doesnβt watch the show. Thatβs not really much of a diss. I mean, Kanye for example, has gone off the rails talking crap about the Grammyβs yet they have awarded him 21 times. Mariah has been nominated 34 times. While yes, sheβs gone against some formidable opponents thereβs been plenty of times where she was the one to beat and yet they didnβt give it to her for whatever reason.

The only person I feel comfortable calling a lock for nominations right now is Ariana Grande.
I feel like Ella Mai and Billie Eilish are highly likely to get genre nods (and BNA for Bille) even if i don't want to guarantee it, and unless H.E.R. totally drops the ball she'll get recognized as well.
That said there are a lot of Grammy bait dropping from now through the end of September so I think the forcasting will be clearer by mid summer.

Mariah is done in the R&B field. The panel will not nominate her. Why though? Have you even paid attention to the R&B field lately? Mariah is the furthest thing from what they're nominating and rewarding there in this era. And Caution will be long forgotten by the end of this Grammy period.

Mariah is done in the R&B field. The panel will not nominate her. Sadly and it doesn't help that the album will be completely forgotten by then. It's weird how they have always been there for Toni though. Toni had her down period in the '00s. That Babyface collaboration put her back on the map. Even then, she's not winning over H.E.R., a fresh newer artist. Besides, Toni's run with the Grammys voters in the R&B field has always been better than Mariah's.

Mariah is not done. If Toni could make a little Grammy comeback, then so can Mariah.

"Without Me" is really, really good, but I'm gonna guess the academy will relegate it to a Pop song nod because Halsey is not a huge name for them yet.
I do think this is the year Ariana graduates to the big General nods.
Cardi x Bruno coming too. Remember "Finesse" wasn't nominated because they didn't actually submit it.

Hoping Zedd/Katy - "365" will get a nom for Best Music Video.

It would have easily gotten a grammy Well, more aptly, it was submitted but rejected by the committees in all categories except for best video [which was highly competitive this year, not sure if that's the norm for that category]. Once you are nominated for an album category the tracks on it aren't eligible for subsequent nominations unless you submit a remix or live version, and I'm assuming NARAS didn't consider Cardi's addition enough of a change to treat Finesse as a 'new' recording. Please Me is all but a lock for rap/sung collab. Still way too early to see if it will be big enough for ROTY or SOTY. If 365 has any staying power, it should have a decent chance at pop duo/group.

I hope Robyn can finally nab a statue. Honey is sublime and lovely and her tour is just about to begin. She may depending on where she's submitted. Dance/Electronic would be much more in her favor than Pop. Barring a massive plummet in goodwill, Ariana will get noms in the 3 general fields. Wins not guaranteed, but she starts out the favorite for Pop Solo Performance. If there's a rock act in AOTY, it will likely be The 1975. Mariah will get nominations in R&B. Whether she'll win depends on the competition. If SZA comes correct, she's in the running too. If Cardi's second album comes out in the eligibility period, she will likely be nominated. More Drake, more noms. Kendrick? The Weeknd? (not LOTF obv, a full album if it comes) After the Oscars, I don't think there's anything else to keep ASIB in the public eye, it's a long gap from then til the nominations period, and nothing other than Shallow has stood on its own in terms of attention. I think if they submit a song to Pop Solo Performance, it could get a nom, but will likely lose to Ariana, and I can see the full soundtrack getting in for AOTY, but losing. There may or may not be a more acoustic Ed Sheeran album this year. Right now, I'd put Ed as likely to lose to Ariana in terms of actually winning the award, but nominations in the Pop fields are likely. Sam & Normani's duet is getting a Pop/Duo nom more likely than not. Always remember us this way has been holding strong on iTunes. Itβs sold 250k so far and is likely beyond 300k I just donβt have official numbers on it. After the oscars And shallow dies down they could easily send it to ac/hot ac/ & pop in March and give it a performance at the billboard music awards. Thatβs if they feel the need to promote it. I could easily see it going top 15 on hot ac and ac and top 30 on pop.

That will depend on whether Gaga actually has an album ready for release as it's been rumored for a while now... I can't see her delaying the album much for another ASIB single.

I believe the right song could get ASIB a Pop solo win. Ariana's TUN album would have a better shot at a win than her winning in a song category, and Joanne won it this year.

"I'll Never Love Again" pretty much has Pop Solo performance nom locked.

Could Maren Morris with her new album pull a Kacey Musgraves and get nominated in AOTY? The album is out in 2 weeks. She has always got Grammy Buzz.

Gaga might have a new single out by the deadline but album probably not. An ASIB track will probably be nominated in pop solo category.

I hope they do! It was nice having a few more nominees. Not sure about Maren though. Kacey has been a critical darling for a long time. Maren did get nods for The Middle for some reason... we'll see.

Maren also got a nom this year for a random cover she did of an Elton John song plus her duet with Vince Gill that was a random release last fall. She's definitely picked up lots of support from Grammy voters so I think anything is possible with her future Grammy success with this album. Many people thought it was strange "The Middle" got Record and Song noms, but I'd wager Maren's good favor with Grammy voters is a big reason why it made it in over other songs with similar success.

Agree with all of this. She seems to have garnered a lot of favor with Grammy voters. Probably helps she writes all her own stuff and she gave a pretty good performance a few years ago. She could definitely be a factor. I saw some people say "A Star is Born" may be too old to be nominated and/or win AOTY. I see this similar to Taylor Swift and her wins. In both of her AOTY wins, she won nearly a year and a half after her albums came out because the album had legs. A Star is Born has been a consistent top seller since its release and it's now 5 months old. I think it's a lock for the nomination and given it's cross-genre appeal in pop, traditional pop and country, it could very easily win. For me it's the early favorite over Ariana, easily, especially given its songwriting chops.

And the album came way too early for it to stay on the voter's radar without a hit. Maybe "most times" in a technical sense, but to me there are some glaring snubs: - "Hero" losing Pop Female Vocal to "All I Wanna Do" - Daydream losing Pop Album - "One Sweet Day" losing Pop Collaboration (seriously, what the f?) - "Butterfly" losing Pop Female Vocal- "We Belong Together" losing Song of the Year to a U2 non-hit There are some others I could quibble with, but the 5 there are outright snubs in my mind. Female (who don't write) like Whitney and Celine won major awards for their biggest projects, Toni Braxton won a slew of R&B awards, and of course Alicia Keys and others won time after time. Even Christina Aguilera has as many Grammys as Mariah! She also still gets nominated for flops, whereas Mariah can't get nominated for genuine hits like Touch My Body, Obsessed, and #Beautiful. Mariah and Madonna have always been slighted relative to their artistic and commercial success.

I don't think she cares and I don't think she will bother to do anything but submit (I say "she" to mean her team), but Mariah did go to the Roc Nation brunch last year. Though that was likely out of respect to her close friends Jay and Bey.

www.billboard.com/articles/news/grammys/8504120/grammy-eligibility-year-close-one-month-earlyGrammy Eligibility Year to Close One Month Early by Paul GreinThe eligibility year for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards will close Aug. 31, one month earlier than it has in each of the past nine years. The change is the result of next year's Grammy telecast being moved up two weeks to Jan. 26, 2020. That change was made so the Grammys wouldn't go head-to-head with the 92nd annual Academy Awards, which moved up two weeks to the Grammys' intended airdate of Feb. 9, 2020. This is only the second time in 44 years that the end of the Grammy eligibility year has been moved up from its traditional Sept. 30 cut-off. This also happened in 2009, when the eligibility year also closed on Aug. 31. The adjustment was made that year because the Grammy telecast was moved to Jan. 31, 2010, to avoid competing with the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In the past decade, the Grammy telecast has moved to January two more times -- 2014 (Jan. 26) and 2018 (Jan. 28) -- again to avoid conflicting with the Winter Olympics. The eligibility year wasn't adjusted in those two years, however. The resulting truncated schedule is known to be punishing for Recording Academy staffers, who operate on a tight timetable in the best of times. This year's change means, of course, that this Grammy eligibility year will consist of just 11 months: Oct. 1, 2018, to Aug. 31, 2019. That was also the case in 2009. Recordings released after Aug. 31 will be eligible for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards. As a result of this change, we're less than three months away from the date (June 24) when voting members can submit recordings for consideration online by logging into their member accounts. Last September, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced that they were moving the date of their 2020 Oscar telecast up by two weeks, from the previously announced Feb. 23 to Feb. 9. No entertainment award show can compete head-to-head with the Oscars, the granddaddy of all award shows. The Grammy eligibility year has ended on Sept. 30 since 1976, except for the two exceptions cited above. The Recording Academy will notify voting members and registered media companies of the change in the eligibility year by email today.
