I can’t really put my finger on why exactly I ended up ranking “In Heaven” so low because lyrically the song is great and had my mom still been around to hear this song I’m sure it would’ve hit pretty close to home for her. That said, I suppose I might’ve found the production a bit too contemporary for what I’m used to hearing from Suzy especially with the strings. Like I had previously mentioned there wasn’t a single bad song in the rankdown and I like or love everything including this song. I’ve never found “My Sweet Love Ain’t Around” all that memorable and I’m actually surprised it made it as far as it did as I think I had it pegged as a possible bottom 5 contender. I’ve always loved “One More for the Road” and I remember both the song and the album Simpaticio got quite a bit of buzz during its release because of her collaboration with Chet Atkins. I wasn’t at all sure this would do well but I’m happy to see it make it into the top 25. “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” is good as well and it did end up receiving a CMA nomination for Vocal Event of the Year, but as .indulgecountry mentioned the other duet is far superior to this one. I hadn’t heard “She Said, He Heard” in so long and it was a joy getting to revisit it again. I had really high hopes for the Give Me Some Wheels but I don’t the label really got behind pushing the album’s singles.

Ugh, I was afraid this might happen because "From Where I Stand" wasn't one of her hits, but this song was easily my favorite discovery. The melody of the song (the chorus in particular) is just such perfection and the instrumentation and vocals are both great as well. It's such a great toe-tapping tune the whole way through. It was the one I kept coming back to as I was doing the rankdown. Total jam.

WOW!! I could’ve sworn my #1 was the first to leave since the other songs from the same album have left already.

You guys are just too harsh at western swing songs and yodel songs...I particularly enjoyed the piano break in Cupid Shot Us Both. The yodeling in I Want to be a Cowboys Sweetheart is extremely mesmerizing and fun.
And I'll comment for Souvenirs which is the song that motivated me to do this after all. I like the influence of Gretchen Peters not only in the lyrics ("I come all this way to find my heart, all I get is souvenirs" is good to highlight the disappointment to reality, also the word "facsimile"), but also the instrumentation such as light harmonica and harmonizing in the end. It is easy to listen to.

Yes, the 3 albums after that in the 90’s were more commercial and had higher charting singles for that time compared to 1989’s “Somewhere Between” but the sound on that album in full to me outshines everything she did afterwards. My #1 vote is from this album it’s the song that when I first heard it on the radio I had to run out and buy it! Hopefully it makes at least Top 5.

Maybe Under The Gun will do better if the melody is not so buried deep in the mix. That being said I think the melody is strong. Cross My Broken Heart has a very catchy melody, especially that piano. Also... I have lost track of my number of perfect rankings in this rankdown lol

I abosutely love the yodel in “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart” and this is just a classic western swing styled song that I’ve long enjoyed. I also just got part two of the Ken Burns Country Music documentary that featured the original song as it was released in the 1930’s by Patsy Montana. “Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt” is such a well written song by none other than Bobbie Cryner who of course gave us the great “You’d Think He’d Know Me Better”. Suzy does a wonderful job with this. I was really hoping that “Souvenirs” would make it into the top 15 as this was one of my favorite re-discoveries from the rankdown. And as recordyear mentioned Gretchen Peters influence is very much intertwined into the lyrics and the production is so spot on for a song like this. Not sure how someone found it in their heart to put this gorgeous song in last place, though! “Under the Gun” did better than I was expecting as its never really stood out to me as one of her best songs and while it does have a catchy chorus it can never really quite hold my attention. “Cross My Broken Heart” is the song I featured for Suzy in my 80’s Ladies of Country rankdown and it has since really grown on me since then. I had mostly all but forgotten about this song until I was looking for songs to include and this is one that I really fell in love with. Another song that exceeded my expectations was “You Wouldn’t Say That to a Stranger” and I’m pleasantly surprised as this is yet another wonderfully written story song that Suzy sounds right at home on. I wouldn’t have guessed that “Heartache” would’ve come close to being a top 10 contender but I’d have to think that the chorus is what likely really draws the listener into this song and it sounds so good with that steel guitar!

I wasn't quite sure what all had made the top 10 so glad to see "Cold Day In July" make it and deservedly so. I must admit I was first introduced to this song by the Dixie Chicks and had no idea at the time that it had been previously covered by Suzy. It wasn't until later on when I started diving into Suzy's discography that I realized she is one of the original performers of the song.

Doesn't compare to the Dixie Chicks' version, but "Cold Day In July" is just plain a fantastic song! SO glad to see it make the top 10!

"Somebody To Love" just plain sounds iconic. I'm not sure if it actually is or not, but the chorus melody was instantly stuck in my head, and has been ever since I made my list back in 1964 when this rankdown first opened! I kinda figured this would be a top 5 contender. Glad to see it at least made the top 10.

I actually didn't know either until after the Dixie Chicks released it as a single. BTW remaining 8 songs are: "Someday Soon" "Outbound Plane" "Aces" "Letting Go" "Drive South" "Just Like The Weather" "Hey Cinderella" "Give Me Some Wheels" Sorry I didn't post this before! Doesn't compare to the Dixie Chicks' version, but "Cold Day In July" is just plain a fantastic song! SO glad to see it make the top 10! I agree that the Dixie Chicks definitely owned this song, but I do love this song in general.

I almost forgot how much I enjoyed "Somebody to Love" and it was another one of my favorite re-discoveries because it was never really a song I thought of revisiting much...but that has since changed! I can't believe this missed the top 30 on the country charts but I'm just not sure her label was all that invested in her at this point in her career.
Oh and that's two perfect rankings in a row...keep 'em coming!

Listening to "Cold Day In July" again. Suzy's version is SO good; way better than I remembered it in fact! I still think the Dixie Chicks gave that song a new life, probably due to their harmonies and their more modern production, plus I think Natalie Maines' voice has a bit more character than Suzy's, so she automatically has an advantage when it comes to selling a song... Still! It's a damn good performance from Suzy too!
