TOP 20: DEATH RACE 2.0

Juice WRLD looks likely to repeat at #1 this week, even as Ariana Grande nips at his heels. Juice's prior album also continues to perform. We note that UMG owns the Top 6 below, and 7 of the Top 10, with four Top 10 titles belonging to Republic and two to Interscope.

Not enough big albums coming out. They could cut streaming after a certain amount of time, if an album is in a certain region. That would probably help a bit. Or just cut the streaming of singles.

Post Malone, Drake and Travis still killing it. I'd argue that even the Hot 100 is boring right now. It's the same songs in the top 10. Sucker debuted at #1 and can very well fall out of the top 10 next week. Not enough big artists are dropping music yet.

70k for #1 isn't that bad though, it's just that top 10 has very low numbers with all the old albums climbing by default.

CHART STORY: JUICE'S RACE TO THE TOP

Grade A/Interscope’s Juice WRLD holds at #1 on the Top 50 Chart for a second consecutive week with sophomore full-length Death Race for Love, which tacks on an additional 74k.

In fact, the entire Top 3 remains the same this week as Ariana Grande’s thank u, next (Republic) and Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack (Interscope) stay strong at #2 and #3, earning another 66k and 38k, respectively.

No debuts managed to make the Top 50 this week, but Queen’s Greatest Hits 1 (Hollywood) did re-enter at #25. The band’s music continues to reap the benefits of award-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody—the actual soundtrack for which hops #5-4.

And as Billie Eilish’s big bow nears, the Darkroom/Interscope talk of the town’s 2017 EP, Don’t Smile at Me, sprints #28-20. Remember: Her premier full-length, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, is scheduled to make a massive splash when it drops 3/29. We can’t wait to see what John Janick wears to Coachella, and blue hair should definitely be taken into consideration.

The move made by Lauren Daigle's Look Up Child (Centricity/12Tone) is also worth noting. That album goes #44-32, as single "You Say" breaks into the Top 20 at Pop radio.

When it comes to marketshare, UMG is #1 with 54%, WMG follows with 29% and SME is #3 with 15%, while the indies claim 3%.

Streeting this week are projects by Interscope’s Rich the Kid, XO/Republic’s NAV, Warner Bros.’ Jenny Lewis and Island’s Dean Lewis.

... those pure sales are tragic. Only two albums sold over 10,000, and the lowest in the Top 10 couldn't even sell 7,000.

Dude, what? I know you're against streaming, but seriously, you suggest to cut streaming after a certain amount of time? Cut streams that come from singles? Dude quit living in the past and get your head into 2019.

I don't see the issue with this. Streaming allows for people to constantly stream week after week. It's a flawed system. The UK cuts streaming from its singles and limited the songs that can show up, so I don't see why the US can't do the same.

But 1 stream is worth way less than 1 sale. Plus, if you take away more streaming - the SPS weekly totals would be even lower than they already are. I don't think the music industry wants that.

The UK's system is so flawed that its chart rules are laughable at this point.

The purpose in the UK was to prevent someone from taking 16/20 of the songs chart - as Ed Sheeran did.

So you're admitting it's a way to inflate numbers that aren't really there? Streaming as a system is flawed, because it treats the consumption of one song as consumption of the album. However, this isn't just limited to streaming, the same should be applied to digital sales of songs, which shouldn't count towards the album. You're essentially double-counting songs, but it's not done in reverse for albums.

I can already imagine charts not including streams. Oricon didn't include streaming (or digital for that matter) until late last year. So I'm used to seeing charts that don't include streaming. And I'm perfectly fine with them. You're picking a very specific example. When overall, the best-selling albums tend to be the most popular. Are you going to tell me A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album is popular even though it's only selling 200 copies a week?

Are we really going to call Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Kiss' a huge success in the US? It's eligible for Platinum off "Call Me Maybe" alone. That's a bit asinine. If we really want to make it accurate, and I've stated this before, an album purchase should count for as a purchase for each song. 

How is the same songs being streamed by the same people every week count? I'd probably limit how much an IP counts towards streaming as well. It's a pretty easy way to game the system. There's also stream trolling tactics. Hey, let's stick 100 songs on an album and they're all going to count and be more "popular" because of the sheer amount.

And I'm perfectly fine with them. You're picking a very specific example. When overall, the best-selling albums tend to be the most popular. Are you going to tell me A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album is popular even though it's only selling 200 copies a week?

Well, for one, stores don't actually count multiple copies towards the charts. If you buy multiple copies at the same time, only one is counted. Two, it's far less cost efficient. Streaming parties cost you pretty much nothing but time. And even then, not really. I can just get put it on repeat and walk away. Three, you can't buy multiple copies without creating a whole bunch of accounts when it comes to digital sales.

I'm sorry, I refuse to consider 'Sleepify' by Vulfpeck a popular album. That album alone earned them $20,000 and had no music on it whatsoever. Now, Spotify did remove it, so they did something right. But it shows how far easier it is to manipulate with no cost to you.

That's a good point actually. When it comes to albums that have the same tracks on them, where should the streaming go? The way it works now, you'll have albums making huge jumps and falls one week after another, jumping up and down the chart.

Streams from playlists (Today's Top Hits, Rap Caviar, A-List Pop etc.) should not count for album consumption, remixes & video streams shouldn't count either. I disagree with the IP system though, if a person continually streams ASTROWORLD 200 times per week for a year, then the album should get those units added.

You misunderstand me on the IP system. I didn't mean after a certain time, your streams would stop being counted. But if you stream a song too much in a certain time period. For example, if I spend 24 hours playing 30 seconds of one song over and over again. There's some shenanigans there. Only obvious situations of attempting to game.
