Sorry but the production of Unwound is not my cup of tea. The fiddle sounds too sharp for me. I put a George Strait song in my top 10 and I don't expect it to leave soon until top 25.

I mean, it was recorded in like 1980... You could probably do a better production job with Garage Band and zero technical experience nowadays I would be curious to hear how a modern re-recording would turn out! It might be kinda nice to hear some updated versions of George's ancient classics :)

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger, And finally drank away her memory. Life is short, but this time it was bigger Than the strength he had to get up off his knees. We found him with his face down in the pillow With a note that said, 'I'll love her till I die.' And when we buried him beneath the willow, The angels sang a whiskey lullaby.
Bonus: "Whiskey Lullaby" - Brad Paisley ft. Alison Krauss

"Whiskey Lullaby" finished at #1 literally right at the start of the eligibility period for this rankdown, when it won the Brad Paisley rankdown hosted by fearlessarrow. Unfortunately for fearlessarrow, this song had already won a rankdown before, so it was featured in the previous BotB rankdown, and was not actually eligible for this one. And since fearlessarrow has gotten so lax on his Pulse responsibilities, he does not actually have any other songs in this rankdown... Anyway, "Whiskey Lullaby" is a beautiful song. The lyrics are so poignant, sad, and downright shocking, so the song really grabs your attention. I am not surprised this song is well-loved. But I am always a little surprised by just HOW well-loved it is. This seems like the type of song that would have random tankers despite being incredible, as what happens with most incredible slow songs, and yet that is just simply never the case with this song. It has now won every rankdown it has ever been a part of (2004 Country, CMA Songs-of-the-Year, and Brad Paisley), except for Part 1 of BotB where it finished at #4!

I'm in a hurry to get things done. Oh, I rush and rush until life's no fun. All I really gotta do is live and die, But I'm in a hurry and don't know why.
Bonus: "I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)" - Alabama
Finished at #1 in the: 1993 Country Rankdown (Host: Cody Wants Out...)

"I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)" is SO flipping catchy!!! This song sailed to victory in the Alabama rankdown, landing itself a spot in the first BotB rankdown where it ultimately finished at #17 (which is pretty remarkable considering the age bias that seems to show up in rankdowns of this nature). It made its second appearance in victory lane during the eligibility for this current BotB when it bested Patty Loveless and Trisha Yearwood to end up winning the 1993 Year-end rankdown. I can't help but jam out to this song every time I hear it, so I am thrilled to be able to highlight it here as yet another multi-rankdown winner despite not being eligible to end up in this series a second time And to think it almost wasn't even included in the 1993 rankdown...

I don't think improving recording technology necessarily makes for better productions--since the people working with them (the producers/mixers/masters) don't uniformly have more talent. There's definitely such a thing as a production job being too glossy, especially in country, rock, and folk. Some of my favorite records ever are from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s, and I wouldn't want them to sound any different if they were made today.
This is probably something pretty much everyone agrees with in principle; only reason I thought to make this post is because on Pulse (and I'm not pointing to anyone specifically), it feels like the prevailing notion sometimes slips into equating sounding modern with sounding better.

I feel like the early production job on Strait's 80s material is pretty mediocre and in a lot of cases sounds way more dated than many things recorded in the same timeframe by other artists. Like, there are songs older than "Unwound" that still sound way more fresh and timeless than it does. So, yeah, I agree with the production qualms in re: "Unwound."

I was gonna surprise y'all with Easton Corbin reveals tonight, but for that comment, you're gonna wait a bit longer! Well it should've been in the 1992 rankdown so at least it wasn't completely left out... Nothing that has left so far was all that big of a surprise other than "Burning Man" as I expected that at least to make it a bit higher considering it was the winner of the 2018 Country Rankdown. I think we all pretty much predicted all three Christmas songs would leave right away and I think both Martina's "Come See About Me" and Patty's "Half Over You" was selected to go out somewhere near the bottom five as well. I'm also not all that shocked to see a few of George's songs leave already including "Love's Gonna Make It Alright" which as bboat11 mentioned it also hasn't aged well for me and is probably one of my least favorite singles by George in recent memory; I also thought both "Cold Beer Conversation" and "Drinkin' Man" would leave somewhere inside the top 40. In regards to the dated sound of some of George's earlier songs such as "Unwound" I can't help but think that considering MCA initially signed him on to a single-song only deal that once a full album was green-lighted there probably wasn't a huge budget provided for this effort. It could've also just been a thing with MCA because even Reba's first three album for them ( Just a Little Love, My Kind of Country, and Have I Got a Deal For You) all sound a bit dated as well.

From the back roads to the Broadway shows with a million miles between, There's a least a million love songs that people love to sing. And every one is different, and every one's the same, So this is just another way of sayin' the same thing.

And I was thinkin’ that I probably didn’t stand a chance, But I rolled up my sleeves, walked up and I said, “Hey, I know I don’t know you, but I’d kind’ve like a shot.” She said, “I saw you comin’ over. I already thought it over, and okay. So now what?”

Last night they had a bad one a mile or two down the road. Well, my buddy walked out and left his woman burnin’ out of control. Well, I was down there in about a hour or so. With a little mouth to mouth, she was ready to go. I’m the fireman. That’s my name.

Living For The Night does not deserve to be highest George Strait song here. 30. "The Fireman" - George Strait This song is nowhere close to bottom 10, let alone last place :sip2:

I consider it to be the best one out of all of his by a fairly wide margin... Lol. But I think we can all agree that the real problem here is how low all his other songs placed, rather than that one still being in...

it does seem like a good spot for this song to go. The surge at the end of submission though.
