40. Say Something
Everyone knows all about my transgressions Still in my heart somewhere, there's melody and harmony For you and me, tonight
Total: 327 Average: 32.7 SD: 11.22546708
Album: Man of the Woods Songwriters: Justin Timberlake, Larrance Dopson, Floyd Nathaniel Hills, Timothy Mosley, Christopher Stapleton Hot 100 peak: 9 Year-end Hot 100 (2018): 85
Say Something is the third single from Justin Timberlake's Man of the Woods album released in 2018. It was an instant grat but was later switched to official single after Filthy flopped. For what it's worth, this is probably still the best track from that album which is otherwise a train wreck. Even so, this song is too repetitive. someguy lost a top 10 here. Meanwhile, Kanenrá:ke , George Strait Junkie , and gardyfan lose their last place.

Nobody's Lonely Tonight is the fourth track of Chris' third album From A Room: Volume 2. It is a ballad of two lost lovers seeking for companion for a night. This ends up so low because no one really likes the song. It got no top half rank.

Two Brothers is a song about two brothers that may have opposite fates in Civil Wars. I appreciate its traditional sound but he just has better songs. Kanenrá:ke loses a top 20.

Drunkard's Prayer is the eighth track of From A Room: Volume 2. The protagonist succumbed to his conscience and confessed his regrets towards his drinking. The melody is not clicking with me. It feels too stripped down and is not an interesting tune. George Strait Junkie loses a top 5 while tim loses his last place.

6. Which cover will be the highest? "Tennessee Whiskey" The lowest? "Was It 26" or "Friendship" Good call. Friendship is the final track of From A Room: Volume 2. It is a cover that was previously recorded by Pops Staples. The perspective of this song is uncommon in country music I think. But it feels repetitive just like Say Something tbh. someguy loses a top 10.

I Want Love is the first instant grat from the Nashville version of Elton John cover album. The song fits his narrative of a troubled man but the melody and especially the vocal are not. He sounds so restrained in this and does not seem to be comfortable. Also the strings are so tacky. Can't believe it could escape bottom 10. bboat11 loses a top 5.

Hangover Tonight is supposed to be the lead single to his tenth album, which is not released still. It is the song that ruined Chris' perfect run at that CMA Awards breakout night because this song was somehow nominated for Musical Event of the Year despite Chris is not credited (and lost to Raise 'Em Up) lol Anyway I feel this song is trendhopping too much. Production and lyrics are basically "pop country" that is on radio these days. That's why I put it as my last place. Meanwhile, gardyfan , bboat11 and someguy lose a top 10.

Traveller finally has a loss as this is the 12th track from that album. This song is his description as a touring musician. I think the harmonica has provided just enough pace for this song, but 6 minutes is definitely too long especially when this is in the latter half of the album.

And From A Room: Volume 1 is the last album to lose a song. Being eighth track, it talks about how he cannot live without drugs. The part when he discovered his friend smoked his marijuana is a bit funny, but it wears fast. However, the harmonica in this song is pretty strong too. Not surprised to see the theme may put some participants away. George Strait Junkie loses a top 10 here.

Was It 26 is the 11th track of Traveller and is a cover of Charlie Daniels' song. I don't like the slur of "at twenty-five or was it twenty-six" in each stanza. it feels so forced after a while. Also don't like the melody much. George Strait Junkie loses a top 10 again.

I knew “Say Something” was going to fall somewhere within the bottom 5 so to see it go out first doesn’t come as a surprise at all. Not a bad song per se but nothing I would go out of my way for to hear again. “Nobody’s Lonely Tonight” is a tad too slow and sad for me to ever really come back around to. But, Chris’ voice and the bluesy production set the right mood and when listening to it you really do get the feeling you’re sitting in some smokey bar late at night. “Drunkard’s Prayer” was an easy last place for me as it just has zero melody and I just can’t ever find myself to be in a mood to listen to it. That being said, this kind of stripped down acoustic song works better for me in a live setting as that is where Chris does his magic and is able to pull you in and stop you in your tracks. “Friendship” is a song I’ve listened to repeatedly in hopes that I’d eventually like more but I think I end up liking it less and less after each listen. There’s plenty of country songs with the word friend in the title that I like including Kenny singing about his “Daytime Friends”, Hank’s “All My Rowdy Friends”, or Don’s “You’re My Best Friend”. Anyways the lyrics to this song just make me think of two friends gleefully frolicking hand-in-hand in a field somewhere and I just can’t. “Them Stems” is a song I’ve never been able to get into and it’s not because of the subject matter at all. Glad to see it leave early. Other than that there weren’t any songs that I was surprised to see leave at this point and I’m happy that bboat11 ’s prediction of “You Are My Sunshine” leaving near the bottom didn’t come to fruition...in fact it better not leave before the top 20.

I am sorry, but don't blame me You Are My Sunshine is the fifth track from the compilation album Southern Family produced by Dave Cobb. In country community it was covered by Johnny Cash and Jamey Johnson, for example. And this cover reminds me a Morgane Stapleton album ought to happen! What a terrific vocal. Chris also complimented her well here. Kanenrá:ke loses a top 5 while someguy loses his last place.

Next up is the song with 2nd highest SD! Someone's last place will be eliminated, along with two more bottom 5 ranks. Meanwhile someone's gonna loses his #2, and another person will lose his top 10!

Death Row is the final track of From A Room: Volume 1, giving insights to the mind from a prisoner in the death row of a prison, after receiving death penalty. Another song with loose melody and structure. The lonesome guitar is kind of mysterious but that's it.

Oh :(
"You Are My Sunshine" is such an amazing vocal from both Morgane and Chris. I'd love to hear a full duet album from them someday. Getting to see them perform it live is even better. The energy they create together is phenomenal and when Morgane takes lead the way Chris interacts with her is beautiful. Deserves better!

Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning is the second track of From A Room: Volume 1, which is a cover of the song recorded by Willie Nelson and was released in 1982. The original peaked at #2 on Hot Country Songs chart. I think this song ruined the album momentum. Feel too slow and not interesting. Kanenrá:ke loses another top 5 while phil1996 and bboat11 lose a bottom 5.

Outlaw State of Mind is the second-to-last track of Traveller. It tells the listener to do whatever you want, like an outlaw. It is also featured in the movie Hell or High Water. I like the pulsating guitar and how the harmonica ran wild in the secnd half the song. Kanenrá:ke can breathe for a while as he loses a bottom 5 instead of a top 5.

The next seven reveals are ties. #26~#24 is a three-way tie, while #23~22 and #21~20 are two-way ties.

More of You is the seventh track of Traveller. It is an ode to his wife Morgane. Morgane's vocals are highlighted prominently here too (probably the most obvious moment in the whole album). However it has been done many times before and this song does not move me much. castleoblivion26 loses his last place while Kanenrá:ke and phil1996 lose a top 10.

Without Your Love is the seventh track of From A Room: Volume 1. Very R&B for him and imo similar in tune to I Was Wrong. However the blues guitar helps it to set apart from other R&B songs on country charts. singingrulebritannia loses a top 5 while castleoblivion26 loses a bottom 5

Love Me Anyway is the eleventh track from new P!nk album, Hurts 2B Human. It entered Hot 100 at #96 in the album release week due to strong downloads. Eh, Chris sounds quite rough and out of place in this tbh. Not to mention the sappy lyrics that are abundant in her album. bboat11 is the first person to lose his #1, while singingrulebritannia loses his last place. The only person who has #40 left in the rankdown is phil1996 .

Uh the three 'star' collaborations are easily his worst work And P!nk in particular has been making nothing but terrible music this whole decade, which compounds this and made it a simple 40 for me in a rankdown with lots of great songs

Daddy Doesn't Pray Anymore is the ninth track from Traveller. Written while his father was living, Chris says the decision to perform it came after his death in October 2013. Not unlike the twist in He Stopped Loving Her Today, the reality of this song hits hard.
