Scarecrow In The Garden is the third track from From A Room: Volume 2. It is a spare, ominous ballad about a West Virginia farm that has been passed down through the family of immigrants from North Ireland. Probably the most narrative and descriptive song in Chris' catalog. I was glad it ended this high but also disappointed that it ended up behind singles...so predictable. tim , Kanenrá:ke and I lose a top 10.

What Are You Listening To? is the stand-alone single released in 2013. Written as a man singing to his ex-lover, Chris wonders what song his ex is listening to, and whether she is carefree, sad, in love, or in other moods. It could have been a decent sized hit if it were released this year instead of 2013 where bro-country began plaguing country radio and pushed out this kind of song. Mellow melody seems to be great radio fodder. I wonder what song the "woah-oh-oh-ohhh" refers though. Top 10s of more than half of participants are gone, but singingrulebritannia finally gets rid of his only remaining bottom 10.

Nobody To Blame is the second single of Traveller. It is about a man accepting responsibility for the punishment he's receiving from the woman kicking him out of their apparently well-established life. This became Chris' first top 10 single on Country Airplay chart. It has sold 423,000 copies in the United States as of November 2016. It also won Song of the Year at the ACM Awards. Solid country rock song with some tasty instrument jams at the end, but I am still annoyed this got the slot of Tennessee Whiskey as second single...At least it became probably the most hit non-single whatsoever. Four top 5s are gone, and look at the surge towards the end of submission!

"Nobody To Blame" is such a fantastic song! I love the feisty energy of Chris' vocal performance. It was an amazing single, and I was hoping it might be a contender to win this thing. It's certainly one of my favorite singles from him!
"Traveller" next?

Parachute is the third single of Traveller. An estranged lover is willing to come back if she ever reaches a time of need, even if she ignores him until then, because things he neglected to say or do ruined the relationship. The song has sold 248,000 copies in the US as of December 2016. Besides his vocal on full force, "fallin' feels like flyin' 'til you hit the ground" is probably one of the most dramatic lyrics I have heard yet capturing the scene precisely. it is these complex lyrics that appear simple that gives beauty of country music. George Strait Junkie finally loses his remaining bottom 10. singingrulebritannia and I lose #1.

Oh wow! I fully expected "Parachute" would be an easy top 3 contender, if not the winner! This is shaping up to be a more unpredictable finish than I was expecting!

"Millionaire" needs to gtfo. I thought it was pretty widely agreed that that song is boring as hell, and too similar to yet inferior to "Broken Halos"...

#5 is tied with #4 in points, #4 edges out because it also has a #2 rank which #5 does not...

why is "Millionaire" still in this? I like it but it is no where near the caliber of everything else remaining

Tennessee Whiskey is the third track of Traveller. It is basically a ballad from drunkard to his woman. It is a cover of a country classic—a minor hit for David Allan Coe in 1981 (peaked at number 77 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles chart), and a major hit for George Jones in 1983 (reaching number two on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in November 1983). His career and country music were revolutionized when he and Justin Timberlake performed this song (and Drink You Away) on 2015 CMA Awards. Based solely on a little more than one day sales after the broadcast, it reached number-one on the Hot Country Songs chart, and number 23 on Billboard Hot 100, selling 131,000 copies. It peaked at number 20 the following week, selling a further 118,000 copies. It has sold 1.8 million copies in the US as of April 2019, and is still selling around 4k copies per week more than 3.5 years after that live performance. The sales and streaming of this song keep the album afloat on country album chart. In March 2018, it was announced that Tennessee Whiskey: The Musical, a play for Broadway and based on the story of Dean Dillon, is in the pre-production phase. I really think it could have been a #1 or #2 on Hot 100 if this received radio push, but this song strives on its own based on pure talent. castleoblivion26 loses his #1.

why is "Millionaire" still in this? I like it but it is no where near the caliber of everything else remaining Because nobody tanks it... Millionaire is the first and only single from From A Room: Volume 2. Lyrically, the song is about "spare love" and appreciating relationship closeness over material wealth. The song has sold 247,000 copies in the United States as of April 2018. This is typical stripped down Chris Stapleton tune for you lol, talking about being content with life. Unpopular opinion: I think the melody is slightly more varied than Broken Halos... George Strait Junkie loses his #1.

Rooting for "Fire Away", but it'll probably be "Broken Halos". Which I am totally okay with as well!!! Just as long as "Traveller" doesn't win, because it has now overstayed...

Traveller is the first track and first single from Traveller the album. It is about vagabond life of a musician physically travelling across land, and parallel trip through time. It was nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, winning the latter. The song has sold 135,000 copies in the United States as of February 2016. The analogy of traveler having a parallel trip through time is not that fresh, but this song has some other fresher analogy as well, like the heartbeat's rhythm and the rubber, or "every turn reveals some other road" to describe uncertainty but being hopeful towards life, or the bridge that hints the idea of this song will be repeated over and over again. Great meaningful lyrics. tim loses his #1.

Fire Away is the second track from Traveller. The song is about bracing for a heated fight with a particularly sharp-tongued lover and hanging in there no matter what as a form of unconditional love. The song's accompanying music video was released on February 26, 2016, and is currently his only song that has a music video. The release of music video propelled the song to hit the peak on Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. Brutal lyrics. This is not much worse than Parachute in terms of degree of unconditional love envisioned. I may not be able to provide this kind of love to others...The focus on mental illness in the music video adds depth to the lyrics. Kanenrá:ke loses his #1.
Broken Halos is the first track and second single from From A Room: Volume 1. Broken Halos is a song about people close to us who pass away. At his concert at the Ryman Auditorium in February 2017, Stapleton introduced the song by noting that he wrote it on the day a childhood friend passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 37. It won the awards for Best Country Song at the 60th Grammy Awards, and Single of the Year and Song of the Year and the 52nd CMA Awards. Additionally, it received a nomination for Single Record of the Year at the 53rd ACM Awards. Okay a rankdown #1 that has no one ranked it at #1 and the host being the lowest ranker... :-/I mean lyrically this song is good at comforting others about the loss of individuals, but musically it is literally the same guitar riff over and over again, so dull!

I am not a huge Chris Stapleton fan, but I am 100% on board for this top 2! I love both of these songs! "Fire Away" has always been one of my favorite songs from him, and "Broken Halos" is one of his best singles :) Thanks for hosting, recordyear! It was good for me to expose myself to Chris more :)

Thanks for you all for joining this rankdown! This is my second rankdown hosted so it is more convenient and quicker to make graphs and presentations. And fewer participants mean easier to organize the data lol (doesn't mean more participants are not welcome btw) Now a promo time! My personal rankdown consisting of Indie/Less Known Country Songs is supposed to due this Wednesday, but I know it clashes with two country year-end rankdowns and the rankdown also has too few (6) particpants right now, so I will extend the deadline but I don't know how long the potential participants want to rank those songs, so if you are interested, please reply in that thread. I will consider it, thanks!

I’m happy to see that “Scarecrow in the Garden” managed to sneak inside the top 10 because that’s one of the best songs from the From A Room albums and also was an instant favorite of mine from the first time I heard it. Somehow this song always manages to get stuck in my head. I figured “Nobody To Blame” would make it to the top 10 and I’m quite ok with it leaving before the top 5. I can see why they went with it as a single for country radio but it was never one of my favorite songs from Traveller. “Parachute” on the other hand was an instant favorite of mine when I first heard the Traveller album and I remember having it on repeat the entire summer of 2015. I was thrilled to see it get released as the album’s third single even if it was over a year later. I’m not quite sure when I first heard “Traveller” but it’s the song that made me a Chris Stapleton fan and it’s a song I’ve always related to quite a bit. I wasn’t expecting it to win the rankdown so I’m glad that it managed to make it to the top 3 since I knew the song had its share of detractors. It was about this time of year in 2015 when I attended a Waylon Jennings tribute concert here in Austin that included everyone from Willie Nelson, Eric Church, Lee Ann Womack, Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, and Chris. At the time it was Sturgill who had the most buzz and the entire audience was waiting in anticipation to see him perform. About the time that Chris came on to perform Waylon’s “Ain’t Living Long Like This” I remember there being a group of twenty-something guys in front of me chatting and one of their friends said something like “Have you all heard of this guy yet?” to which they all replied no. He mentioned that they should check out his new album Traveller because it was really good and all the while I just kind of stood behind them chuckling to myself. Anyways I’ll never forget that moment because it wouldn’t be just a few months later after the CMA Awards in the fall that everyone in that group was probably now a fan. Thanks for hosting this recordyear as I really enjoyed doing a rankdown for an artist that is outside of the usual artists that we do these for.
