Jewel has just announced that she is working on a new album (or two) with new aproach.
Hello my lovelies,
As many of you know I have been busy writing ... I have a crap-ton of songs. Not sure how many that is, it’s a good question for Alan... ha!
[Sidebar from Alan: Since preproduction began last June, Jewel has written over 60 new songs, most of which are finished songs in demo form other than a dozen or so that are still in progress.]
He said it’s been the most prolific period I may ever have had. It’s funny, but I really have no idea.
This is the first album I have decided to write from scratch. For every album since Spirit I have gone through my back catalogue and gathered about 12 songs I like and then write 3 songs max. Even for my country albums. I have always written so many styles that no matter what type of album I was doing, I could always pull songs in that genre.
But for this album, I wanted every song to be new. And I didn't want to do anything I have done before. So, it's taken me a while to find a new writing style and break free into something strange and soulful and vital. Something that is visceral. Something that is modern but timeless.
It's strange writing at this age. Writing poems and books has been more my speed lately for some reason. When I was a child I wrote like a bleeding vein. I was raw and guttural and quicksilver. Feelings were pouring out of me with near violence. I needed to write to stay sane, to mitigate hurt, to stop the bleeding, to connect using sheer brute force. And I loved it. Every syllable felt electric.
To write now is a different skill. I used to write from pain and angst. I write from joy now. I write for sheer adventure. I write for poetry. I write for silliness. I write to explore.
I have pushed myself hard to let myself be free. To forget everything I used to know and used to be. To let go of everything that I think of myself and push past it.
Right now, I have folk and pop and rock ... but it's the neo-soul I am leaning into. My favorite songs are using my voice in a new way, and paying homage to the influences of my youth- Sarah Vaughan. Etta James. Muddy Waters. W.C. Handy. Marvin Gaye. Aretha Franklin. Bessie Smith. I’m not sure how it will all come together. It still hasn’t really formed yet in a cohesive way. But I feel it in there. And I won't stop until I find the songs in me that are free and wild and new.
In the meantime, I have to say the pop stuff has been my second favorite- it’s been fun! They make me smile. I want you all to hear them. Maybe there will be a whole other record. Who knows?

I really like this new song. The lower register is giving me Spirit vibes.

Don't know how to put a video from FB/insta here
but she said she has recorded over 100 songs but she does not like some of them and that this time process is pretty slow...
and she may release a new song soon...

There is a 25th anniversary deluxe reissue of Pieces of You coming this year. Jewel and her archivist, Alan Bershaw, briefly discuss the release in February's EDA post: February EDA

I wish she would jump on some underground dance tracks. I loved her song with Chicane, and her remixes with Gabriel and Dresden and Markus Schulz are legendary.

I don’t know what I’d want from Jewel at this point. Other than her song will Dolly a few years back, I haven’t cared about a Jewel song or album since Goodbye Alice In Wonderland and evening then, I only cared because it was the follow up to 0304. I’d say I’d like her to return to her folk pop sound but she did just that with her last album and it didn’t catch my interest. Maybe something more upbeat pop/rock a la Michelle Branch or even something with a very light synth/electro vibe (I’m talking VERY subtle) a la Beth Orten might work.

I'd be down for a full-on rock album. I've always thought she had a great rock voice.

So, caveat: I am a MASSIVE Jewel stan. She is literally one of my all-time favorite singers. She could teach a master class in singing and probably should. Dynamics, tone, power, elasticity, beauty, grit, soul, ache...she really has the full spectrum. Even when she "sold-out" (and nobody but her, it seemed, was in on the joke), she was still Jewel, through and through. At least "her" experiment worked. Jewel can literally sing ANYTHING and I would buy it. Hell, I even bought her children's lullaby album. Listening to No More Tears for the first time now and...perfection. Also, her last album was such a return to form. We finally got a studio version of A Boy Needs A Bike, which I have been waiting for since I first heard it in...1997/1998? It must go back to her debut era. His Pleasure Is My Pain is also at least that old, if not older. Also, Love Used To Be is one of her best songs period. Same with The Shape Of You, Mercy, and Everything Breaks, which are staggeringly beautiful. Come to think of it, Picking Up The Pieces is probably her 3rd best album, after Pieces of You and This Way. Her worst (with no competition) is Perfectly Clear, followed closely by Sweet and Wild. Her voice sounds beautiful in all her albums, but those are the only albums that I NEVER revisit and forget what the songs sounds like. I wasn't really here for when Jewel went full country. She still sounds magnificent because she never sounds bad, but the songs just did nothing for me, on the whole. Anyway, all that said, here is my ultimate Jewel playlist, in no particular order:
1. Who Will Save Your Soul 2. Foolish Games 3. Near You Always 4. Painters 5. Morning Song 6. Adrian 7. You Were Meant For Me 8. Don't 9. Daddy 10. Angel Standing By 11. Amen 12. Deep Water 13. Down So Long 14. Hands 15. Jupiter (Radio Version) 16. Fat Boy 17. Life Uncommon 18. Absence Of Fear 19. Standing Still 20. Break Me 21. This Way 22. Cleveland 23. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone 24. Grey Matter 25. Sometimes It Be That Way 26. Run 2 U 27. Intuition 28. Leave The Light On 29. Fragile Heart (love both versions) 30. 2 Become 1 31. Sweet Temptation 32. Emily 33. Again and Again 34. Doin' Fine 35. Haunted 36. I Love You Forever (Acoustic) 37. Fading (Acoustic) 38. No More Heartaches (Acoustic) 39. Loved By You (Cowboy Waltz) 40. Perfectly Clear 41. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland 42. Good Day 43. Satellite (another oldie but goodie. I like how she livened up the arrangement and picked up the tempo for the album version) 44. Last Dance Rodeo (I liked it in it's original '90s format WAY better, but again, Jewel blesses us with studio versions of fan favorites always, but this is still one of her best, even in this version) 45. Where You Are 46. 1000 Miles Away 47. Love Used To Be 48. A Boy Needs A Bike 49. Everything Breaks 50. The Shape Of You 51. Mercy

She still sounds magnificent because she never sounds bad, but the songs just did nothing for me, on the whole. The only album I skip by her as well is Perfectly Clear. I'm glad it was somewhat successful for her but it ultimately isn't something I particularly enjoy. If I were to rank her albums, my order would be: 1) This Way 2) Pieces of You 3) Spirit 4) 0304 5) Goodbye Alice in Wonderland 6) Picking Up the Pieces 7) Sweet and Wild (Acoustic only) 8) Perfectly Clear Her music has resonated with me since I was a teenager. If people haven't given Picking Up the Pieces much of a chance, I highly recommend: Love Used to Be, A Boy Needs a Bike, Everything Breaks, Nicotine Love, Carnivore, My Father's Daughter, and Mercy. If you read Jewel's post about Love Used to Be from her EDA post, it elevates the song to another level.

This woman needs more love and attention. She needs to know how loved she is. Listening to Picking Up The Pieces. Wow, it really is a continuation of Pieces of You, with a little more polish on some of the songs. But, vocally, she brings me right back to her debut. I had the honor and privilege of seeing her live at South Station in Boston. She randomly rode the subway, busking and then she got off at South Station and played in the middle of the terminal. February 2007. I remember calling my friend Grant and telling him to come over because it was something really cool happening. After he heard her live (he's a musician, too), he was like, "Damn, she's good!" This was after Alice. I forgot how great that album is. My Jewel album ranking:
1. Pieces Of You (it's so rare that I would say someone's debut is their best, but yes...this is one of those times. It's not one of the biggest-selling debuts of all time for nothing!) 2. Picking Up The Pieces 3. Goodbye Alice In Wonderland 4. This Way 5. 0304
6. Spirit 7. Joy: A Holiday Collection 8. Lullaby
9. Sweet and Wild 10. Perfectly Clear

I see on FB and Insta she has been very active in some groups or events about Mindfulness and well being etc
To be honest I am not interested to follow these things so I do not know much
But it seems she had many small concerts where she sang old and new songs...
Anyway... looking forward to this Picking up the pieces was/is great album

"Anxiety has been a teacher to me. It has caused me to learn there are only two basic states of being: dilated and contracted- and that every thought feeling and action led to one of those two states. Fear, anxiety, jealousy anger, greed all led to contraction. Joy, curiosity, observation, love, gratitude all led to dilation. I learned that if I was headed into a panic attack, I could hack my way into a dilated state by focusing very hard on a different feeling. I chose gratitude. It’s amazing how profound such a single thing can be if you feel it deeply enough. It’s a practice I still use today. I’m pleased to release this new song inspired by the transformative capability of a simple feeling."

'Grateful" is fantastic. My favorite thing she's released in ages, and it's quite catchy too.

I love the song, but she doesn’t have the voice to carry this song. Her runs were questionable. I love the song otherwise.
