Coming up next... Could it be LBTrocks ' #1 ALREADY??!??!!! OMG!!!!! Nope, not his #1! I used this as a clue because funnily enough I have heard multiple people joke about how "She's A Hottie" is probably going to be LBTrocks' #1. Well, ClevelandRox, as you can see, you were wrong! Not only was it not Flops' #1, but he wasn't even the highest ranker for it. That honor went to ChicaCherry콜라, who submitted at the last minute and helped push this song a sizable distance into the bottom 5. It was the primary last place contender for this rankdown, but towards the end it mounted a pretty sizable comeback. Anyway, LBTrocks definitely loves this song, and probably held back on ranking it super hight because he knew it wouldn't do well... Honestly, I enjoy this song a lot too. I ranked it pretty low because Toby's catalog is overall just so strong, but tbh I actually really love this one.. The instrumentation is flawless, and without a doubt Toby is literally the ONLY vocalist who could make such a horrible-on-paper song sound so earnest and pleasant... Lmao I'm glad to see it escape last place!

"She's A Hottie" is a dumb song, but my GOD. The instrumentation is pretty damn cool between the fiddle and the guitar work. The vocal arrangement also works for me and I love how Toby delivers the song. Definitely a catchy tune!

bboat11 no, I did not hold back. I ranked this way higher than I was initially expecting to, honestly. Y'all should know by now I don't censor my rankings to avoid backlash and ridicule, lol. I rank songs purely based on how I feel about them.

If the White House was in Texas, man We'd get a straighter answer. If they'd let us smoke what we want, We'd have a lot less cancer. There'd be a bunch more daddies Sons could be proud of. We'd have half the crime, We'd have twice the fun.

Rounding out the bottom 5, we say goodbye to one of Toby's most recent singles. "A Few More Cowboys" is one of the many flops he has had in recent years, however this one had the distinction of being WAY catchier than stuff like "Drunk Americans" and "Shut Up And Hold On". I honestly thought this sounded SO fresh when it came out, like "Finally Toby's making good music again!!!"
Unfortunately, the more I listen to this song, the more I dislike it... He has had a lot of preachy songs about how great America is, but tbh this one is the one that bothers me the most. Most of his patriotic songs at least have a point to make, but this one comes across as a super preachy "old man yells at a cloud" type of song.
Not to mention that many of the lyrics don't even make sense... Just look at the highlighted lyrics above. The White House may not be in Texas, but it definitely has been occupied by presidents that are from Texas... Not to mention that Texas provides a whole bunch of congressmen and senators to our government. All that has changed literally nothing about the ability of our government to give a straight answer. How does smoking whatever you want give you LESS cancer? Where are the scientific studies? Why are cowboy daddies people that sons can specifically be proud of? I'm pretty sure lots of cowboys were absent from their families a lot, drunks, abusive domineering alpha figures, etc... I mean, some were certainly great daddies, but it is not a parenting role that is typically glorified. And we'd have half the crime??!?! Like, vigilante justice??!! I fail to see how adding a few slow-talking horse-riding men in cowboy hats into our society and allowing them to take matters into their own hands would help make our country a safer place as a whole...
Anyway, I know that I am analyzing the song to death, but I am trying to prove that if you truly flesh out these ideas, none of them actually work. They are supposed to prove that having a few more cowboys around would help our country to be a better place, but instead they are a bunch of vague statements that have no practical value whatsoever. As a result, they just come across as super preachy and ignorant when strung together over the course of an entire song.
If this were merely a song about the aspects of cowboy life that were so great, it would be awesome. Unfortunately the attempts to deliver a politically-charged statement cause the whole thing to be one big headache. In its essence, this is not a song about cowboys at all, it is a song about how to make America better using outdated references that hearken back to a time when life was, in fact, not ideal for anyone except cowboys...

"A Few More Cowboys" is okay. I kinda like the chorus... It's not a favorite tho and not something I actively listen to. This is around the turning point on my list. You get much lower than this, you start getting into songs I don't care for.

So far so good. "She's a Hottie" is the only one we've lost so far that I semi-like, but it's still not a particularly good song from Toby, either.

Nothing too surprising here in this bottom five; "Drunk Americans" was an easy last-placer for me and "Mockingbird" was a disaster upon my first listen and didn't improve too much beyond that, unfortunately.

Surprised to see "Drunk Americans" out this early. I know it is far from loved, but I love the melody, even if the song is pretty disposable otherwise. He's had far more objectionable songs.

So I strongly dislike 90% of Toby's lyrics. I based all of my rankings off of the sound of the song - melody, catchiness, etc - for the most part. I hate preachy songs about America and religion, which is most of his damn catalog, so I kind of just have to shift my mindset when listening to his music because I do enjoy all of his music. Lyrically I only like a handful of songs. Melodically I like most of them.

There’s nothing redeeming about “Mockingbird” and it never should’ve been covered or even released as a single for that matter. Good riddance. The same can be said for “Shut Up and Hold On” as it’s incredibly hard to even make it through the entire song without making my ears bleed. I don’t necessarily mind the chorus but the verses are just incredibly annoying. I’ve never cared for “Drunk Americans” and I’m even more flabbergasted by the fact that it was co-written by Brandy Clark alongside the great Bob DiPiero. I see why this type of song appealed to Toby but overall the execution of it just didn’t work. While I may not be a fan of “She’s A Hottie” I can see why some you might enjoy it. That said, having listened to Toby on the radio since his debut I pretty much have an unbudging opinion of what I like and don’t like from him and this falls in the latter. I couldn’t even really tell you how “A Few More Cowboys” goes but bboat11 pretty much sums things up to a T. Not to get political but there’s no difference between this and Trump’s Make America Great Again campaign slogan…like how far back in time are you wanting to go for the country to be considered great again?! Anyways since this was never included on a studio album and barely scraped the top 50 on the country charts it isn't shocking to see it not make it out of the bottom 5. While I more or less went along with the crowd in thinking that “Red Solo Cup” would be out in the bottom 5 I’m actually not all that surprised TBH as I’m sure that while it has its fair share of detractors there’s some amongst us that like it (I don’t, however!). I doubt it makes it beyond the bottom 10, though.

I had all but forgotten that this was included lol but yea I wouldn’t have expected this to do any better. I’ve mentioned this before but I’m rather on the fence about including this song in artists personal rankdowns and probably would’ve liked to have had their duet “Piece of Work” included over this. That said, I’ve always more or less enjoyed this but did find it quite hard to rank here.
Ohhh...and I can’t let this song slide without mentioning (again) that I was at that Jimmy/George/Alan concert in Dallas way back when of which Toby was rumored to have been in attendance!

"Get My Drink On" is a catchy, toe-tapping song that I definitely jam to when I hear it... It is not one of my go-to Toby songs, so I am not disappointed to see it leave, but I am a bit surprised by just how horribly it performed here! This feels like a Toby classic, in a similar wheelhouse to "I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight". It looks like the majority of us simply didn't prefer this one alongside most of Toby's other work, even if we don't hate this.

"Beautiful Stranger"'s underperformance here is one of the first real tragedies of this rankdown, imo :'( It is not entirely unexpected, however, because this was one of his late-career flops, so it definitely has familiarity bias working against it.
Every aspect of this song is beautiful. The instrumental arrangement is just so peaceful and pleasant, the lyrics are romantic and tender without being cheesy, and Toby's vocal is powerful and believable. This one borrows elements from most of Toby's biggest strengths, imo.
Unfortunately, we did not as a collective think that this belonged any higher than the bottom 10. I was hoping it could at least climb into the top 40 or something...

I'm not sure how I put "Hey Good Lookin'" that high lmao, not sad to see it go but I also do enjoy the song for what it is.
"She's A Hottie" is terrible and overstayed.
"Mockingbird" did not deserve last place, it isn't the greatest song but like "Hey Good Lookin'" I enjoy it for what it is.
I didn't really pay that much attention to the lyrics of "A Few More Cowboys" because had I it definitely would have been lower. This was a first time listen for me and is probably the song I listened to the least out of the entire list.
also Can the atrocity that is "Red Solo Cup" please GTFO! I cannot even put into words how much disdain I have for that song.

I have no idea who thought "Crash Here tonight" was a great single choice, but it has got to be the most BORING song Toby ever released to radio.... The song itself is not objectively bad, and there is definitely a time and a place where I might enjoy it if I got the urge to seek it out on my own, but as a single it has no value whatsoever. I'm shocked this even made the top 15. Several songs on this album would have made better singles, but I guess Toby must have been at a point in his career where he wanted to release a song like this as some kind of artistic statement.

Many moons I have lived. My body's weathered and worn. Ask yourself how old you'd be If you didn't know the day you were born. When he rides up on his horse, And you feel that cold bitter wind, Look out your window and smile. Don't let the old man in.

Rounding out the bottom 10, we say goodbye to the newest song in this rankdown! "Don't Let The Old Man In" is a great song, but tbh it is hard to compare it to most of Toby's career. First of all, his vocals sound oddly weathered and quiet here. I don't necessarily dislike that, but it is odd compared to the powerful performances we are used to on other ballads such as "You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This" and "Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You". The melody is also pretty repetitive and doesn't have much dynamic range, so it gets tiring to listen to much quicker than his songs usually do. I am okay seeing this leave here!

That song isn’t great or anything, but I liked it a lot more after seeing The Mule. It really fit in well within the context of the film.

Finally "Hey Good Lookin'" is gone. Just a horrid tune. 'Hey good lookin, whatcha got cookin' is such a cringey line and the melody is cheesy as hell too. Bye!
I love the chorus of "Get My Drink On." I get where it might be viewed as bland/boring tho so I'm not surprised or upset to see it gone.
"Beautiful Stranger" bores me. I don't find the melody at all interesting.
Speaking of boring, I'm glad "Crash Here Tonight" didn't make it that far. I love a good traditional-leaning tune but my gosh, this melody is terrible and really weak. This song has never done anything for me.
