“I Saw God Today” was one of my top 5 most-played songs of 2019! I love the lush instrumentation.

So, so close to getting “I Saw God Today” into the top 20. While I’m not a religious person, I do consider myself to be quite spiritual and therefore songs such as this one definitely tend to resonate with me on a very personal level. Not the least bit surprised to see it as the most polarizing song, though.

"I Saw God Today" is one of my favorite George songs ever since I started getting familiar with his music - I prefer this song over "Troubadour" which won its rankdown by far.

Yeah, "Troubadour" is a novelty song, while "I Saw God Today" is an all-time great. The lopsided praise they receive is shameful.

Yeah, "Troubadour" is a novelty song It most certainly is not. Thank you. I let this comment slide, but I’m glad you highlighted it. If anything, I’d say it’s gone on to become George’s “The Cowboy Rides Away” as far as representing the last part of his career. I literally adore “Troubadour”.

He is literally singing a song centered around a nickname that has been given to him by his fans. That sounds like the definition of novelty to me! Like if Martina came out with a song about herself being the Celine Dion of country music, that would literally be a novelty song I mean, call it what you want, but it is a song that only works in the very narrow context of the specific artist who is singing it, at the specific point in his career that he is singing it. That hyper-specific focus is what makes it novelty, imo. Also note: "novelty" does not automatically mean "bad", it just means that the song exists for a very specific and pointed purpose that pretty much no other song comes close to matching. I don't mean it's not great.

Ok but let's be real. If Kellie Coffey ("When You Lie Next to Me") had become a famous singer, SHE would be the Céline of country; sorry Martina! I mean...you could mistake Kellie for Céline!

I don't mean it's not great. Girl that's not what defines a novelty song at all though? A novelty song has more of this association with something being goofy, frivolous, has a certain minimal in-the-now appeal, not necessarily a "deep" song lyrically, and only has any kind of lasting impact for being something fun and mindless for people. "Troubadour" doesn't fit any of the criteria for being a novelty song imo. It's more like an autobiographical song in the sense that it's closely associated with George Strait and at a certain moment in his career, but... it just doesn't feel 'novelty' in any way. Examples of things that I'd slap a novelty label on: "The Shake," "(Save a Horse) Ride a Cowboy," "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy," "Friends in Low Places," "Fish" (Craig Campbell), a lot of Brad Paisley's goofy songs ("Ticks," "Online"), probably at least a third of Trace Adkins singles ("Badonkadonk," "Brown Chicken Brown Cow," etc.). Not all of those are inherently "bad," but that's about the only thing about your assessment that I can agree with, lol. Basically I didn't have an issue with you dismissing "Troubadour" as novelty because it always has a negative connotation, rather because it didn't make any sense! Georgie does have novelty songs in his catalog tho... I introduce you to, "Lovebug":

Toby Keith has always been one of the more polarizing country artists on Pulse, so the fact that he was able to make the top 20 in both BotB and RotB is quite an accomplishment in my eyes! But his strongest material is SO strong, he absolutely deserves it. "Wish I Didn't Know Now" is a catchy and awesome song, that I feel tends to get overlooked in favor of songs like "Should've Been A Cowboy" when talking about his '90s material, so it is nice to see it getting some recognition around here lately.

Up next, an awesome song by a well-loved artist that I consider to be among her best material, and am continuously shocked how many of her big "fans" continue to pay it dust...

"You've Got To Talk To Me" was a substantial hit for Lee Ann Womack from her debut era. While I would expect ClevelandRox to tank it because he has a personal vendetta against Lee Ann (I think she murdered his dog or something based on how he talks about her), it always seems to pick up a few other random tanks every time it shows up in rankdowns, and it makes me sad :( This song is SO catchy, and honestly continues to grow on me even more every time I hear it to this very day. Lee Ann never seemed to want to fit in much with the mainstream country market, but this is an example of how great of a mainstream artist she could be when she wanted to!

That's right!! Our first strong top 10 contender to be kicked out is Garth Brooks of all people!! "Callin' Baton Rouge" spent multiple lists in the top 2, and hung out in the top 10 for the entire submission process until about 4 lists from the end when .indulgecountry and Cody Wants Out... got their fingers on it. ClevelandRox and kw9461 were able to get it back comfortably into the top 20 before submissions closed. This is one of Garth's catchiest jams! I know he is kinda hated around here, but it is really nice to see both this one and "The Dance" being able to finish in the top half of these rankdowns, because they are definitely among his best songs.
