Seeing this on the verge of #1 on Alt is killing me slowly inside. We better see a string of bea hits to justify this crap or so help me.
"Level of Concern" plummeting on Pop makes it almost certain that it won't be able to block this one from the #1. With other similarly pure pop songs muscling the indie rock out of the way to take their turn at #1 after this one does, it feels like the format really wants to commit hara-kiri this year.
Also blink-182 is increasingly revealing themselves to be craven losers desperate for relevance and it's getting sickening. I'm sticking with Angels & Airwaves, at least Tom's managed to keep some integrity.

Damn that cameo was baaaad. Did Tom keep them from making bad music or something? Seeing this on the verge of #1 on Alt is killing me slowly inside. We better see a string of bea hits to justify this crap or so help me. "Level of Concern" plummeting on Pop makes it almost certain that it won't be able to block this one from the #1. With other similarly pure pop songs muscling the indie rock out of the way to take their turn at #1 after this one does, it feels like the format really wants to commit hara-kiri this year. Me too. Level of Concern still has a decent lead but that’ll go away soon. Maybe Cage the Elephant will save us? Or even holdout stations. Good Things Fall Apart was looking like a surefire #1 but peaked at #3 instead because of them. I hope desperately what you’re saying isn’t true, except for bea getting hits. Alt girls that don’t copy Billie Eilish kind of flop, but even if I Wish I Was Steven Malkmus stalled in the 30s, it’d be better than nothing. That song reminds me of Numb by Meg Myers for some reason. Those types of songs are among my favorites. I know my favorite 90s angst sounds will rarely return to the chart but I’ll take what I can get. As for pop fully taking over alternative, it would sadden me to the core. IMO actual alternative is having a good year. Lots of cool alternative and indie has charted so far. To have it replaced with this fake lo-fi shit riddled with samples and no talent is vomit inducing.

I like this song so I decided to listen to the ep, which is kind of more of the same, nothing that stands up to this song. But the last track was the remix with Blink 182 and I have to agree that it sounds not only awful but incredibly awkward. One thing I got from the ep was how I felt so out of place listening to it since it's obviously meant for the teens to early 20s audience, and that's why having Blink on there made it so awkward because it's like a bunch of old guys trying to fit in with young guys. It made me uncomfortable.

3 questions:
1. Why is this garbage on Alt? 2. Why is this garbage about to top Alt? 3. Why does this garbage exist?

3 questions: 1. Why is this garbage on Alt? 2. Why is this garbage about to top Alt? 3. Why does this garbage exist? There are forces at work in the music industry and radio trying to turn Alternative into a pop format. The people with money are pushing this hard to radio stations who desperately need money. A lot of Alt PDs (notably Mike Kaplan of KROQ/WNYL who also advises every Entercom Alt station on what to play) feel that rock is dead, too white/racist, have never liked the genre, or some combination of all three. This is just the tip of the iceberg but this isn't the thread for a dissertation on the state of alternative music and radio. It's ugly. The amazing thing is that this song is currently stalled out which means despite its pop hit status and so many forces at work trying to make it a #1 hit there's enough Alt stations putting up resistance that it's buying time for a worthier song to catch this thing. It's quite fitting that a guitar-heavy song named "Hero" is charging to the top 10 with a full head of steam, the question is whether it can catch Powfu before "Level of Concern" can no longer hold out.

I swear, any of the big gainers right now could dethrone the top 3 and I’d be happy. Well, except “Zen”. Funny thing I noticed is that a lot of the stations heavily spinning this are owned by Cox Media or one of their subsidiaries. There’s a couple iHeartMedia stations spinning this, but the majority are Entercom. This Mike Kaplan dude and the whole Entercom crew sound pretty clueless. Here’s an article about it: www.google.com/amp/s/variety.com/2020/music/news/kroq-kevin-bean-music-ratings-post-malone-1234609654/amp/Yeah, I agree that if “Hero” shot up to #1 and stopped Powfu and AJR from taking it themselves, it would be the most delicious irony of the year.

Thank god for 21P though. We’re in an unfortunate era rn where one of AJR’s worst songs isn’t even my least favorite song in the top 3.

Thank god for 21P though. We’re in an unfortunate era rn where one of AJR’s worst songs isn’t even my least favorite song in the top 3. At least "Bang!" sounds vaguely alt-adjacent, even though it is definitely pop and total garbage. "death bed" doesn't even sound vaguely Alt-y. It's meteoric rise is mystifying. narp Kaplan is betting heavily on rock being dead. It's quite telling that the two stations he programs, KROQ and WNYL, have not picked up "Hero" yet. Actually, Entercom has snubbed "Hero" in general thus far except WSFS. Here's the top 3 plus the songs on the rise that have a chance of catching Powfu. 1 1 TWENTY ONE PILOTS Level Of Concern 3465 3579 -114 12.697 3 2 POWFU Coffee For Your Head 2611 2529 82 8.421 4 3 AJR Bang! 2554 2522 32 7.643 6 4 TAME IMPALA Lost In Yesterday 2277 2210 67 6.463 10 7 HEAD AND THE HEART Honeybee 1883 1696 187 4.731 12 10 MATT MAESON Hallucinogenics 1681 1497 184 4.68 15 11 WEEZER Hero 1619 1383 236 3.569 16 12 KENNYHOOPLA How Will I Rest In Peace If... 1534 1339 195 4.547 I think Tame Impala isn't going to gain enough to overtake Powfu, but you never know. I think the songs with the best chances are "Honeybee" and "Hero".

I’d be fine with any of those 5 songs putting this thing in its death bed.

Ask Mike Kaplan to listen to this in its entirety.

Knowing Kaplan, he'll probably think that noise is good and play it anyway.

I should be the dissenter again and say that I actually prefer this over the original “Coffee,” which is nondescript at best. She has better songs (albeit cringe-titled ones name dropping Stephen Malkmus) but “death bed” clearly elevated the original to new and pop-friendly heights.

What makes alternative a great format is its acceptance - and embracing - of new artists, even out-of-left field artists like Powfu.
Some of you are getting your wish, though. This is dropping heavily in around it's 15th (?) week; we'll have to see if it'll be a recurrent staple but the prospects of that don't look great, right now.
