Kind of mixed results for me so far, but also this album is really solid so I’m not too upset!

I'm sorry for the delay with this one! I had 3 rankdowns going at once when this started, so I finished Pixar Shorts reveals and then George Strait Extras reveals so I could then focus my attention solely on this one. Then the work week got busy 'cause I was attending a virtual conference on top of working... But I'm ready to dive back in now! We may even finish it in one big push if anyone is up for it :) We're having a HUGE windstorm right now, so let's just hope that my electricity/internet holds out!! Lol

Sometimes I don't like what's in the mirror. Uncomfortable standin' in my skin. Yeah, sometimes I feel a little broken. Doesn't mean I need to be put together again. So, when I'm cryin', Baby, let me cry. Don't fix it, Don't try to make it right.

Oh what a disappointment. This song is beautiful. Deserves top 5 at least.

I think "love me like a girl" is one of the more boring songs on the original album, but the ballerini version elevates the song sooooo much for me! That live performance on the Kelly Clarkson show blew me away when I saw it a couple weeks ago.

I overshare because I overcare 'Bout the person over there Who's completely unaware that I overthink, then I overdrink to overcompensate. Yeah, I know there's moments that I'm missing If I'd just shut up and listen, But silence makes me scared, So then I overshare.

"overshare"'s big appeal is how relatable it is! I think that everybody who listens to this can relate to it on some level, because social anxiety is a very common problem whether it's as serious as she describes it in this song or not. Everybody knows what it is like to feel awkward about an interaction whether they are good at socializing or not.

Figured my number one would be out about this time.
Liked this song on the kelsea album, fell in LOVE on the ballerini version.

I already know it ain't worth it in the morning. And, yeah, I like the high, I just don't like payin' for it, mmm. I'm stressin' over conversations, But now that's anxiety that I'm erasin', 'Cause I don't wanna go to the club.

The Introvert's Anthem!!!! I LOVE "club" so much! The thing that I love most about it is because it is literally the opposite of what I expected based on the title. Based on Kelsea's age and past material (and the overall trend of country music in general, let's be honest) I figured "club" would be an anthem about how awesome it is going out to the club on the weekends. Imagine my delight when it was literally about NOT wanting to go to the "club"! This song is SO relatable to me, who gets zero joy from the club scene.
This song also did a bit better than I expected it to here, because I feel like it has always been on the polarizing side on Pulse. After being a bottom 3 contender for much of the first half of the submissions though, this had a massive second wind, and zoomed clear up to #7, where it settled in with a comfortable enough cushion to not really be in a huge risk of falling again!

There's a thin, thin line between love and hate. Between a heart that's whole and a heart that breaks. Between ending the world or saving the day. There's a thin, thin line between love and hate.
We used to be so happy, didn't we? We used to say that forever'd be easy. But the day that you lied, I felt it all change. I crossed that thin, thin line between love and hate.

“Love and hate” really shines on “ballerini” - if I ranked the kelsea version it would have been bottom 2, honestly, but this version rocks.

I gotta be honest...to me, this RD is different from how we did Shania Twain's Up! ballerini is just such an incredible re-do imo that I wound up just ranking kelsea. The differences on ballerini are far too different for me and while it's redundant I personally would've liked to have just had two separate RDs for them. For instance, the ballerini "club" would've been in my Top 5 if it was a separate RD. Even "the other girl" would've gone up higher on my list.
"overshare" would've gone up higher too--ugh, ballerini is just incredible.
EDIT: this Top 5 is still beautiful tho. LOVE both versions of all of them--PARTICULARLY "needy"!!!!

Sometimes it feels like it's all real, But nothin' here is as it seems. I ask myself, does it feed my soul or my anxiety? Carpet's red, ego's fed, but it's myself that I have to face. That's why I've got a love and hate relationship with L.A.

“Love and hate” really shines on “ballerini” - if I ranked the kelsea version it would have been bottom 2, honestly, but this version rocks. "Love and Hate" is top 5 for me on the ballerini record, but dead last in its original version, so that averaged out to a #11 rank for me here, lol. It was the song with the biggest elevation under its new take imo!

The thing that shines the most about "la" to me is the songwriting. It is the only song on the album that was written solely by Kelsea, and this song is SO mature, and frankly shows that there is a lot more going on in Kelsea's head than people probably give her credit for. We'll probably never know to what extent this is an autobiographical song, but I personally imagine a lot of it is intended to be true to Kelsea's recent life experiences. A regular person never even thinks about how anxiety-inducing it must be to be a small-time celebrity in a room full of bigger names, and I imagine such a thing would be incredibly overwhelming! The questions of whether or not you fit in, whether you are being rude by being too chatty or too standoffish, etc. are explored so beautifully in the lyrics like "I've got some famous friends that I could call, but I don't know if I'm cool enough. And what's worse than spending time alone is one of them not picking up." We may not be able to relate to having famous friends, but we can totally relate to the anxiety of getting up the courage to call somebody, only to have them not answer, and then you're left wondering if they're busy or if they're ignoring you...
There are also undertones of how difficult it is to be a musician in Nashville, especially a female musician, and how you don't want to do anything to piss off The Powers That Be and jeopardize your standing in the industry when you are barely starting to get your foot in the door. The line "if I let down my hair in the ocean air, will Tennessee be mad at me?" is one of the standouts in that regard.
And of course the lyrics I highlighted above are just plain brilliant! "I ask myself, does it feed my soul or my anxiety?" in particular is probably one of the best lyrical moments of her entire career thus far!

I should also mention, the themes of "la" are also explored really well in "overshare", so they are like nice book-ends to this album in that regard. It both opens and closes with the themes of how anxiety-inducing it can be to try to fit in with other people, especially famous people!

You bring up something that really caught my attention with this album. Kelsea reached a GREAT level of maturity with this album. She really has made me a fan this era. I went from not listening to her at all to her being my most streamed artist of 2020 because I finally feel like she’s making relatable songs to me.

Not only is the lyricism in "la" great but it also kinda makes me feel like I'm in California (even though I've never been) while I'm listening, lol.

If touchin' you's gonna make me easy, That's okay, 'cause I don't want space. If not sayin' enough's gonna make you leave me, I swear to God, I'll talk all day. You've never needed anybody, but now you need me. I was the same! But things have changed; I'm needy.

"needy" had a rough start here, but climbed gradually for the entire submission process until it comfortably finished as our highest album track by like 15 points!!
I hadn't paid a whole lot of attention to this song before tbh, but while doing this rankdown this became one of my favorite songs of her career! That chord progression is pure ear candy, and I love the way the beat keeps it driving along in a way that feels somehow more "country" than many of the more poppy driving beats in the other songs.
The chorus melody is admittedly a grower. But now that it has grown on me, I can't get it out of my head! I am beyond thrilled to see this be our highest album track, because frankly it was looking like it was going to be done dirty for most of the submission process! This song is proof that it's never really over until it's over in these rankdowns!

"needy" is just incredible. Both versions are beautiful imo and I've loved the song from first listen. Likely her next single on my personal chart. This really fought with a certain other song to be my #1.
It'll go like this: 1. hole in the bottle 2. half of my hometown 3. homecoming queen?

Very pleasantly surprised to see needy pull off a top-4 finish! It was my instant favorite among the album tracks from the moment I heard it and glad to see it get so much appreciation here in light of the steaming dumpster fire this RD turned out to be. 😷
Rooting for HITB to take home the win!
