I don’t think anyone meant the exact level of success of OTR, just the fact that it was a sizable hit that kept him in the general public eye. Panini was top 5 at billboard. To be fair there are not that many openly gay singers having mainstream success. Now it's more common to see them on the airplay charts but there was a time were only Elton John was there. Anyway, how many gay singers are currently charting on the top 50?Doja Cat and Daya are both openly bisexual. Not what you’re asking for specifically, but close enough.

I know, OTR was just a general point of reference. Nobody said he was a one hit wonder lol. Let’s rephrase: he very likely won’t be able to have the same media profile he had at his peak, but will still have moderate success.

Musicians tend to be gays and lesbians, I am pretty sure that more than half the people in pop chart right now are homosexuals, the big thing about Lil Nas X is, that he is not closeted, the most of them are and often the reason might be business one, because America is still pretty conservative place, sorry the whole world is...

Well, things changed for sure. I remember people saying Robbie Williams was not manly enough to make the charts back in the 90's but Sam Smith had no problem getting radio airplay. And of course i was talking about openly gay (even in retrospective is obvious there were a good bunch of gay singers in the charts back then). The truth is this guy is brave, novelty or not Old town road was a mix between hip hop and country which are not the most gay friendly genres (even if things improved there too)

To be fair with women things work very differently, maybe not for an openly lesbian singer but bisexuality on a woman, specially if it is a hot woman is generally promoted as a straight fantasy, so it's not uncommon going a little lesbian on videos even when the singer is not bi at all. And there are even cases of coming out bi to years later saying she is not bi at all. Not the cases of Daya and Doja Cat anyway Duncan Laurence is bi too (and engagged with a man) but of course he is from the Netherlands and he got to the charts in a quite strange way (with a song that is two years old)

Now that I have heard the song divorced from the video, I actually like it a lot. Very catchy and meme-worthy lyrics.

I think I’ll buy this on iTunes and I’m trying to get my friends to. If they won’t, maybe I’ll PayPal them $1.29 Idk it just feels important? I remember Big Machine marketed Fancy Hagood as Who Is Fancy because they didn’t think an out & explicitly gay artist could sell. I want to show the industry that it can, even if it only equates to ~3 iTunes downloads

Probably the best thing I've heard from him since OTR. His music videos continue to be ridiculously over-the-top, but the descent on the pole is an iconic visual already. Much better than the Lisa Frank-meets-Kris Kringle vibe of his last single's accompanying visual.

I’m living for the people here and on Twitter who think his career is over. They did the same song and dance when he came out, and when he rapped about gay sex on “Holiday”. Yet, here is he smashing. In a wig and heels, no less.
No idea what shape or form his career will take after this (and not because of this video, but because I think his music is just OK). But I think he’s making a legacy and saying “IDGAF” along the way... and that is mad respectable.

#2 on Spotify, up ~75k streams to a new peak of 1,311,800 😭 Edit: #1 on iTunes bitch #1 on youtube for the US on 26/3 with 4.6 million views. The video is doing really well on youtube. Over 25 million views now. Top 10 debut on the Hot 100 should be on lock I would think with these numbers.

At this point I need Montero and Belcalis to link up again and bring on the impending apocalypse or whatever the f@ck people are expecting from them.

At this point I need Montero and Belcalis to link up again and bring on the impending apocalypse or whatever the f@ck people are expecting from them. holy shit, idk what would happen but it would break the Internet. I need it I was scared of backlash, but it’s weirdly empowering? He orchestrated it all. He’s manipulating them and they don’t seem to realize it, and even if they do, they’re feeding into it. They’ll always react the same, doesn’t matter what we do, so we can do anything, really. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this managed to debut Top 5. Peaches is a bit too strong to overtake, though

"Panini" is still my favorite from him, but this one slaps too. The visual is stunning.

Look even if you hate the song having a song by an openly gay black man becoming a hit is well overdue. Hoping this smashes it's such a bop.

I’m also on the team that doesn’t find his music all that great, but 100% wants to see him succeed. I think he seems like a good kid and love him taking on the Fox News/pearl clutching conservative idiots. Also like that he’s paving a lane that no one else has ever done (at least not successfully). Rooting for him!
