It was nice and she did the best she could considering she is pregnant. I was really hoping for her to kill some choreo like her "Where Have You Been" video/live performances and give us that energy.
I was surprised at the lack of guest performers though. She could've easily had a number of them appear to help elevate the performance more and take some of the focus off her.
Looks like R9 isn't going to appear until next year at the earliest with baby number 2 on the way!

I don't understand why she did the halftime show if her goal was to do nothing for it, and also nothing with it post performance.

I'm guessing the pregnancy was not known when she signed for the show. She's not Beyoncé or Gaga in terms of live spectacle, but that time she did four VMA medleys she served spectacle and vocals.

Gonna be honest, it feels Rih is never coming back to music proper. She seemed like she didn't even wanna be there and honestly I don't think she even enjoys performing/making music anymore. We'll probably get one last album from her and I expect an official retirement announcement cuz it seems her heart isn't in it anymore. I just wish she'd just tell us that she's not coming back instead of leading everyone on.
I think it is crazy to think there's kids out there right now that don't even remember when Rihanna was an active hitmaker, she's just the make-up lady now.

She's probably never going to officially announce she's retired because she makes way too much money from streaming. She'll occasionally release music just to keep her streaming numbers up.

Let's be real, her streaming revenue is likely a small fraction of her actual income at this point. Fenty is a massive money making brand.

I do wonder how much involvement Rihanna even had in her music in the first place. She cranked out albums annually for almost a decade, and with promotion and recording, they were all made to be hits but did she actually put much time into genuinely developing herself as an artist or was she more into the performing/hitmaking aspect and others picked out the songs for her to record when the time came? I think that's why ANTI felt so intentional because there was more time leading up to it and it felt more like a cohesive collection of songs rather than a bunch of potential hits. (I'm also not saying there's anything wrong with someone recording songs for the primary purpose of making hits. They're all bangers). So now that she's doing something else that's made her bigger bank than possible in music, it's not like really she's given up much. That's how it seems to me anyway.

Highlights
Pose - Never liked this song but it was my favorite part of the show i think people wanted more of this lol Rudeboy - loved the mix they did Work - loved how she worked the dancers and the camera Wild thoughts - loved the choreography how they were all in formation Diamonds
The show was simple, sleek and clean. It grew on me and I enjoy it. I was disappointed with Umbrella though it was her breakout song but not much happened for that moment.

I enjoyed the show, she was glowing and has tons of mega smash hits.
Now, if only she had the ambition and work ethic of Madonna, she would've been untouchable in terms of sales & streams.

There was never any real artistry going on. Bad performer, can't sing live, doesn't write her own music, she was always just a radio artist. Somewhere between the time of her abruptly stopping and thru Covid she became this legendary figure who the younger kids looked up to in terms of music. I think they just assumed she was a great performer cuz of her vast catalog. Her Superbowl performance just reinstated what was previously known: she was always and is still always just a radio artist. Nothing more. all these publications who are giving her a 5 out of 5 are just refusing to give negative scores to a black, pregnant woman.

Other then he's trying to insinuate that Rihanna is getting preferential treatment and the benefit of the doubt over other certain white female counterparts because she is black which is a ridiculous accusation.

If a man gave this same performance, no one would be shocked at the positive reviews. I sort of disagree with this because Justin and Adam were pretty much flamed for their performances, and generally the female performers in recent memory are the ones who have had better received half-times (e.g., Madonna, Beyonce, Katy, Shakira & Jennifer, etc). Rihanna is skating on this when she honestly shouldn't be- and I think it's ok to call that out in that the entertainment press is biased here. Had she not been pregnant the news outlets would have had a similar lack luster reaction to her show that was given to BEP, Weekend, and other performers. All of the comments from fans, and non-fans alike excusing her performance while saying things like "well she was never a performer, vocalist, artist, etc. anyway", makes this seem all the worse because it implies that she should have never been given the job in the first place. It's like saying you hired a candidate that was unfit for the role, and then excusing their low performance by saying they were never fit for the job in the first place. I'm perplexed by that line of thinking. I think obviously the NFL believed she would rise to the occasion given that they are the biggest platform for music ever, with the greatest built in audience an artist can ever find. But it's sort of clear by now she couldn't care less about music in general. I don't consider Rihanna any worse than any other artist to come out in the 00's when it comes to artistic ability and talent. A lot of the criticisms made against Rihanna could apply to Kesha, Katy, and Gaga, so I think that should be contextualized. She had everything at her disposal to make this an event, and she just didn't.

I think that even if he had given a better performance, everyone pretty much was going to shit on him anyway because it was totally unfair that he got to do a second Superbowl performance when Janet Jackson didn't get to and they did not apologize to her and she lost her career because of something HE did to her.

I mean yes of course to all of that, but his performance was still trash, so he gets no passes from me for anything.

Rihanna Super Bowl Halftime Show Spurs (Weirdly Specific) FCC Indecency Complaints According to a report, comments referred to the "overtly sexual dancing" and "hand sniffing" by the pregnant singer. www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/rihanna-super-bowl-lvii-halftime-show-fcc-indecency-complaints-1235260065/

02/24/2023Rihanna performs during Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show at State Farm Stadium on Feb. 12, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona. Kevin Mazur/GI for Roc Nation Rihanna‘s Super Bowl LVII halftime show made headlines for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the singer’s surprise pregnancy reveal. But, according to a long list of comments received by the Federal Communication Commission, it also resulted in more than 100 complaints from across the country about what some viewers deemed an overly sexual performance. “Inappropriate touching and dance moves, very raunchy for a family to watch. Little kids do not need to see this,” read one note from a complainant in Rockton, Illinois, even as another described it as “sick sick sick.” A number of other notes referred to “sexualization, genital grabbing, sniffing of her fingers,” as well as “gyrating… and rear end… grabbing,” “filth,” “perpetual air humping… glorifying being a stripper” and a description of dancers “holding their hands up the cracks of their butts and pumping,” in a note from Plainwell, Michigan that misidentified the performer as Shakira; the latter shared the stage with Jennifer Lopez in 2020 in a performance that, not for nothing, derw more than 1,000 FCC complaints. One all caps screed from Depew, New York went deep, with the writer lamenting, “FRIENDS AND FAMILY GATHER TO WATCH THE SUPERBOWL. WHY DO WE CONTINUE TO HAVE TO BLACK NOISE YEAR AFTER YEAR. THEY CAN’T SING OR WRITE ANY DESCENT MUSIC. ALL I HEARD WAS WORD WORD WORD WORD WORD WORD WORD WORDWORD WORD WORD WORDG. BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK AND GO DOWN ON ME, GO DOWN ON ME GO DOWN ON ME OR GO DOWN ON YOU ETC. I DEFINATELY [sic] DON’T CONSIDER THIS MUSIC., AND I DON’T APPRECIATE SEEING HER AND HER DANCERS GRABBING THEIR CROTCHES ON NATIONAL TV!. THE NFL SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF WHAT THESE 1/2 TIME SHOWS HAVE BECOME.” Another one from Brush Prairie, Washington pleaded, “Can we please have a half time show where the artist doesn’t grab their crotch or try to dry hump the lead singer. I really don’t want to see 30 back up dancers doing pelvic thrusts. Ew. Also, twerking should rank up there with the F bomb,” while a viewer from Colorado Springs, Colorado suggested, “If I were to go to a place where children were present and did these same motions, I would probably be arrested. Therefore, I don’t see how it is fair for it to happen on television against our will and without warning. Quite infuriated that things like this continue to be permitted.” Yet another from Ellicott City, Maryland, said they were literally sickened by the show, writing, “The halftime show was disgusting. Scratching your crotch and anus and the sniffing your fingers makes me puke. The devil sequence was blatantly anti Christian and so inappropriate. Why is this trash allowed on television?” And while a handful of complaints were focused on the commenters calling the game and the ASL interpreter, nearly all were squarely focused on RihRih’s performance and the writers’ beliefs that the content was not family friendly. At press time a spokesperson for the NFL declined to comment for this story and a spokesperson for halftime show producer Roc Nation had not returned a request for comment. The Super Bowl halftime show is no stranger to controversy and pearl-clutching complaints, from those who were offended by Eminem taking a knee during the 2022 show to viewers overstimulated by the site of Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine’s nipples in 2019, and, of course, the many complaints following the 2004 show where Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s nipple in an incident dubbed “Nipplegate.”

These people who are complaining about the 'pornographic' nature of the performance seem to know an awful lot about what pornographic content is. There was no penetration during her performance so it's not pornographic. Most of these complaints are coming from a place of racism. They need to sit the hell down. in a note from Plainwell, Michigan that misidentified the performer as Shakira WHAT One all caps screed from Depew, New York went deep, with the writer lamenting, “FRIENDS AND FAMILY GATHER TO WATCH THE SUPERBOWL. Happy Birthday to RiRi! I've rewatched her Super Bowl performance and think she did a great job. The rewatch with a realistic perspective helps. I think I went in with these weird ass, unfounded expectations. As if I’d never seen a Rihanna performance before. She gives what she gives, and it’s more about her radiance and confidence than anything else. When she says, “suck my cockiness,” that’s not for play-play. She’s her own performer and honestly pretty consistent. Not making excuses, but in hindsight… was she supposed to be the best performer the Super Bowl has ever had, or was she supposed to give us a nice mix show of huge hits/fan faves (she did), a Fenty moment (yes), a look (maternity wear be damned, she still looked goodT) and some cute production moments (minimalist, but still cute)? It was far from bad.

updated Nielsen figures.
with the correction of an initial reporting error, Rihanna's halftime show becomes the most-watched in history, breaking Katy Perry's record.
