Most middling as in: - the song is not panned/largely disliked by many - the song is also not strongly praised or considered a favorite by many either It's just average and in the middle, yet somehow became a notable hit. Wasn't bad enough to change a station but there's not necessarily a desire to hear it. - Justin Timberlake, Not a Bad Thing: this isn't one of his more hated singles like Filthy, Can't Stop the Feeling, etc but it's also not a huge favorite like SexyBack, Mirrors, or Cry Me a River. It's just very average and rather forgettable.
- Justin Bieber, Holy: far from a Yummy or Baby, but is there seriously anyone who would say this is one of his best hits?
- Beyonce, Break My Soul: not bad by any means but I think it just feels so forgettable in her discography and immediately felt weak once we heard the rest of Renaissance.

"Mine" by Taylor Swift seems to fit this mold even though I love it. Seems to get outshined by "Mean," "Back to December" and "Enchanted" from the same album.

Christina Aguilera-Keeps Gettin’ Better,It was Christina’s last major solo hit. It went top 10 in 2008 and has been overshadowed by the hits from her first three albums.
Miley Cyrus-Malibu it has been overshadowed by everything that Miley has released after. Just forgetten since.

As Pulse's resident XO, I'd probably say Earned It. It's The Weeknd's first big solo hit and I've never seen anyone say they particularly like it or hate it, it's just there. Funny enough Abel even left it off his tour setlist probably because nobody really cares about it anymore, especially compared to stuff like Can't Feel My Face and The Hills which completely overshadowed it at the time.
A more recent example for Abel is probably Heartless, which I personally loved but I don't remember very many people even talking about it when it came out, it was pretty much overshadowed by Blinding Lights and then eventually Save Your Tears.
Heartless is a banger despite being pretty forgettable and Earned It is probably in the lowest tier of Weeknd hits, it's really quite bad IMO.

It is in the dictionary so it's moreso just a word you're not familiar with.

For my personal taste, Earned It is one of my least favorite singles by The Weeknd. Can’t Feel My Face and The Hills were so much better and I hear both way more than I do Earned It. The funny thing about Heartless is that I forget that song exists sometimes. There’s many times where my brain thinks Blinding Lights was the lead single from After Hours because it was so massive and overshadowed Heartless. I still remember In Your Eyes (which also got overshadowed by BL) but frequently forget about Heartless.

Rihanna- Hard. Anyone actually remember this song aside from when they go through the entire 2009 YE? It's very dated and mediocre.

I actually much preferred Heartless at the time, but I completely forgot about its existence in his discography until reading these posts. It sounds sooo last decade, too. 💀💀 Yeah the production is excellent but it's definitely the backwash of the late 2010's trap explosion.

I understand your explanation, middling in term of subjective taste, but I don't think "Break My Soul" fits here with your other examples. it's a critical favorite, Grammy and BRIT award-winning dance banger and will be memorable for having kicked off Renaissance and subverting everyone's expectations from her. I think something like "Best Thing I Never Had" exemplifies what you're going for better. Somehow became the biggest hit of the 4 era at the time and yet it's not really memorable, didn't get the critical and fan love "Love on Top" received over the years, didn't become a classic like "Run the World" either. it's just there.

I can confidently say "Used to Be Young" and "Single Soon" by Selena Gomez were middling on arrival. Everyone will be back to streaming "Midnight Sky" and "Hands to Myself" in a few months.

P!nk's back discography sort of became this with the likes of What About Us (I personally love that song, but it does feel like it came and went) and Just Like Fire. Everything post Just Give Me A Reason has sort of felt like a big wash of her general sound, but it doesn't sound as fresh as it once did about a decade or so before.
Kelly also has a few of these in Catch My Breath and Mr. Know It All.
Gwen Stefani's Rich Girl also seems to have been swallowed up by her other more memorable hits
Depending on the meaning of this theme I think Britney's I Wanna Go and Hold It Against Me could qualify, but we have to discern if the meaning of this term is just the songs that didn't have longevity or if the hits themselves just aren't fan or general favorites of the artists discography, technically I would say Me Against The Music fits the bill over either of the other two.
For Shakira I could see arguments for Beautiful Liar and Can't Remember To Forget You both being considered this - which is interesting because both of those songs are high level features.
Similarly, Whitney and Mariah's When You Believe also seems to fit this category too.

Despite "Music of My Heart" being *NSYNC's 2nd biggest Hot 100 peaker (and Gloria Estefan's last top 2) and despite how amazing it is, it's pretty much forgotten.

What was the chart run of this one like? I can't imagine it had much longevity. It jumped 41-2 thanks to the single in its 7th week but fell pretty quickly. AC airplay pretty much kept it on the Hot 100 long enough to go recurrent.
