Interesting update. NBC has dropped the BBMAs and they are shopping it to another network. It was announced today that they are moving the show from May to November. The same weekend that the AMAs are most likely airing... I wonder if one or the other will end up moving at the end of the day as they will be fighting for star power.
Honestly, they should just merge the two at this point. The AMAs don't have nearly the same prestige they did 25 years ago. Not only that, but their nominations are based on data from Billboard to begin with.

That would 100% never happen and likely BBMAs will move the date as they are the smaller show.
I'm interested in what the tracking period will be for BBMAs now? A bit of a weird month especially they usually also stop the tracking for the show 1-2 months prior, so the tracking period will be ending in Fall.

There aren't enough interesting artists with the star power out today to justify having all these award shows anymore.

It seems really bizarre that they would do this all of a sudden. I wonder if there was some other turmoil behind the scenes that has lead to this.
The Billboard Awards had always aired in late November/early December so it was also really odd that they shifted it into the Spring months, especially when most of those songs and albums are already so outdated by then and that tracking period is so long ago.
I can't see this ending well.

There aren't enough interesting artists with the star power out today to justify having all these award shows anymore. Interesting or not, big artists don’t even show up to these “subsidiary” medium tier shows anymore unless their publicist gets a heads up that they’re winning something. And even then you might get a taped message or presenters accepting an award on someone’s behalf. Every show does not need to be televised. I know some of us live for the nostalgia of the VMAs, AMAs and the like, but gone is the quality control. It’s all about fan voted mess and who shows up to collect. The performances aren’t even must-see TV when YouTube uploads them within an hour or less. I enjoy shows like the NAACP Awards for personal, cultural reasons, but a lot of my faves would rather attend the “those other shows,” whilst ignoring the institutions that consistently (and I do mean CONSISTENTLY) give them flowers. I know I’m going to see all my aunties, uncles and cousins celebrating each other in one room, ratings and performances be damned. The masses aren’t interested in blocking out three hours of their night anymore for crap like the VMAs. I think this fan voted aspect has really made these shows far too predictable, so we watch for the performances. Every award is a spammed hashtag on Twitter. I was watching the 1987 American Music Awards the other night, and Whitney Houston, The Judds, Lionel Richie, Janet Jackson, Madonna, New Edition, Reba McEntire and Kool & the Gang won. All of the performances were so low budget, that the artists had to WORK to be the sole provider of entertainment. I was barely old enough to comprehend what an award show meant as a toddler, but at my big age now, I get it. At the risk of “ok boomer,” and trying not to be adverse to how things change, there’s a lot left to be desired when tuning into these shows. They are made for an audience not dissimilar to the productivity of fast food. They want it now and they don’t care how it’s packaged. Problem is, so few and in between do they actually care enough to tune in. So you’re marketing a show to those that can give you either the cold shoulder or slight uptick in viewership after they watch fan voted winners sweep (as they should because that’s no fault of the popular artist if their fans are doing what the shows require). Best Group: BTS. Fine, that’s cute, but I’m not in suspense. I’ll give the BMAs one thing: it’s all about that data. And then you have one or two fan voted awards.

This is very weird because aren't they both produced by Dick Clark Productions? lol

Interesting, so wouldn't this just mean Penske Media Corporation now produces both? I'm failing to see how the date issue came about. Since Penske is Billboard's parent corporation, this just seems like Pense wanting to better position the Billboard Music Awards. Am I confusing myself here? lol

Is it though? The AMAs always felt like they just gave it to whomever actually bothered to show up/attend. The Wanted, I love them to death, but they won an award one year and none of the other nominees had shown up so it was obvious how they got it. But I just wonder what happens when NONE of the nominees show up for a particular category?

www.avclub.com/there-will-be-no-american-music-awards-this-year-1850266862There will be no American Music Awards this year The Billboard Music Awards have taken the AMAs usual airdate By Sam Barsanti In what seems like a tacit admission that there are simply too many music-related awards shows but definitely is not that, Dick Clark Productions has reportedly decided not to do the American Music Awards this year after the Billboard Music Awards took over its usual November airdate. That comes from Variety, which explains that the AMAs are owned by Dick Clark Productions, which are also owned by Penske Media Corp., the parent company of Billboard, and so “insiders suggest that the thinking was to promote [PMC’s] own brand.” Variety also says that there’s “chatter among music industry professionals” that the AMAs are “becoming stale.” That may have something to do with the fact that the AMAs have been around for a (relatively) long time. Dick Clark himself created the American Music Awards in 1973 after ABC lost the broadcast rights for the Grammys to CBS. The show was a real competitor to the Grammys (which have been “becoming stale” for decades, by the way) for a while, but in recent years the ratings have been declining—as have the ratings for most awards shows, to be fair. The Billboard Awards are more recent, starting in the ‘90s and then getting revived in 2011, when it started airing in May to avoid the AMAs in November. Variety expects the AMAs to take over Billboard’s usual May window in 2024, and PMC told the outlet that “networks and streamers” are currently in talks over the broadcast rights for both shows, but Variety also points out that neither show has a broadcaster lined up yet. The story suggests that this could be a problem, since you need some kind of broadcaster in order to be broadcasted, but even the Golden Globes found a partner for its revival. If that show can live on, there’s no reason for any other awards thing to have trouble.

You can count on Taylor Swift and couple of k-pop acts showing up though so there's that. And then they'll boast about the "record breaking" reactions on social media or some bullshit like that.

Yeah, whatever this online format is that they're planning seems like a mess. I read all performances will be pre-taped? Is there an actual ceremony?

Taking the AMA's slot for this seems ... meh. I hate 3 hour long shows, but they could've done a shorter awards show with a focus on social media. We'll see if this pays off for them.

I'm open to this new concept, but the rollout just seems a little disorganized. Also a pain to watch all these ads in the middle of the performances!

The 2023 Billboard Music Awards have officially handed out all the night’s prizes – so who emerged the big winner? After the winners were announced all day and the night’s performances rolled out on BBMAs.watch and across BBMA and Billboard social accounts, the top winner of the night was Morgan Wallen with 11 wins, while Taylor Swift was the biggest female winner adding 10 prizes on the night. (In fact, Swift’s 10 wins and Drake’s five on Sunday night put them in a tie for the winningest artists of all time at the Billboard Music Awards.)
