This is tied with OOTW as her best song imo.

This is tied with OOTW as her best song imo. You’re not wrong. Between this, OOTW, ATW, Cardigan, Maroon/AH…it’s a lit battle for the top of her discography. I do feel this one edges the rest out though.

One of my favorites from Lover. I’m surprised it was never released as a single but they went with “ME” and “The Man” instead. Lover is a great album but the singles rollout was messy. It should’ve gone: 1. You Need To Calm Down 2. Cruel Summer 3. Lover 4. Paper Rings or I Think He Knows

It should’ve gone: 1. You Need To Calm Down 2. Cruel Summer 3. Lover 4. Paper Rings or I Think He Knows The challenge with launching the L-era was that she wanted to distance herself from the dark/perceived negative R-era. So neither YNTCD nor a song with the word Cruel fit that criteria when trying to change the narrative to a very low-info General Public. Honestly, Delicate would've been the perfect lead single for L. While 'Me' is painful, it not only accomplished what was needed, but also will be forgotten since it luckily did *not* hit #1. CS is great and I expect it will start getting unsolicited radio play if it either cracks the H100 Top 50 or reaches Spotify's weekly Top 10.

Honestly, YNTCD felt like a good bridge from Reputation to Lover. Lyrically, it feels like Taylor moving on from the drama of Reputation and telling the public to calm down while the bright music video moves her into the lighter Lover era.

I always wondered why I could never find a thread for this. Turns out there wasn't one? Also, SEND IT.

Overrated. Swifties are just annoyed this wasn't a single and are blindly pretending it's better than it is. Most of the album tracks on 1989 and even reputation are stronger.

CS, ITHK or even YNTCD as leads probably all would’ve debuted #1 and been actual hits instead of ME!

I haven't heard it on the radio yet (except for one time on the day Midnights dropped) but I just noticed Z100 played this 4 times in the past week. I remember hearing Bloody Mary, Kill Bill, Sure Thing for example on Z100 extremely early in their runs, and all of them became hits. So fingers crossed.

Tbf i doubt i'd put this among my top 10 or 15 favorite Taylor Swift songs, but this is still really good, and i get why Swifties are mad this wasn't a single. Pretty sure a lot of them do geniunely love this too. Also as someone who has listened to 1989 this is better than 75% of the album.

Funny how subjective music is. The blasphemy… Lol, right? It's top 3 in her discography for me, and I'm primarily a Folklore/Evermore/sad Taylor girlie. It's just that good. No accounting for taste! Anyway, I see the point about having the word 'cruel' in the title, and the perception that would have had before anyone heard it but as soon as the GP heard its brightness and incredibly sticky hook that would have all melted away. Still the biggest mistake in her career, but I love that we are seeing that undone now. As for its prospects today, it's had an incredibly slow and steady rise over all of 2023 to its new peak of #13 (where it's been on and off a few times this past week). I see no reason why it won't push into the top ten and continue to build momentum as the tour goes on and people put it on their summer playlists. Timing could be perfect actually, as 'Karma' will likely peak next week and have a few weeks of solid attention. Then we'll have 'Enchanted TV', then boom, full attention to 'Cruel Summer', especially as people feel nostalgic for summer in its waning days. We love to see it.
