EOTY is interesting for female artists. Reba won it in 1986 largely off the success of "Whoever's in New England" and she wasn't the powerhouse headliner she became in the 90s but didn't win the award then despite being nominated most of the decade. Kathy Mattea was nominated for it a time or 2 and she never was an arena headliner. I believe Faith Hill got nominated but even in her day she mostly opened or coheadlined with Tim. If Reba could win it in 86 when she was still on her way up then Lainey could too. I think it'll go to Luke tho.

After Zach Bryan got arrested in Oklahoma yesterday they should replace him with Bailey Zimmerman. Is that truly a significant enough offence that deserves the cancellation of ZB's nominations...?

My 2 cents… i don’t get AT ALL how Lainey can be nominated for EOTY when she’s never headlined anything in her life. Has she ever done an arena tour on her own? I’m talking ones where she goes to places like MSG, Staples Center, United Center, etc… no she has not. She’s never headlined any festival either. Is she even the the second to last on the bill yet? She has 3 solo radio hits and a couple duets and thats it to this point. Not EOTY material. Not even close. I don't think EOTY is an exclusively touring-based award, even though that's often the go-to most of us link it to, but I'd say it's much bigger than that. When you think about who are the faces of the country music genre right now, Lainey is the current female face. It may feel a bit early because she's still so new, but her rise has been quick and she's been wholly embraced by the industry and the general public alike. FWIW, she also has been touring her own shows and selling them out, even if no, they aren't arena-sized venues yet.

I agree that it feels a little early for Lainey to be in the category, but I’m happy for her. I think her role on Yellowstone also contributed to her nomination this year.

The other thing with Lainey is we can’t hold it against her that she only has 3 hits, because the charts move so slow. She is nominated roughly 2 years into her career which is around the same time Taylor and others were nominated, the difference is radio didn’t slow their chart runs to one hit every 50 weeks back then. Lainey is the biggest female right now, won AOTY at the ACMs, has previously won SOTY, is on Yellowstone, etc. It makes more sense for her to be nominated than a throwaway nom for Miranda or Keith Urban, so I kinda dig it.
Do I think she should win? No, not this year. But the nomination makes sense.

I do kind of think the some fans feel a type of way about Lainey being in EOTY based on how the CMAs have handled Carrie when it comes to that category. I feel like it might be somewhat justified for them to feel this way, as seeing everything Carrie had to achieve just to get nominated, compared to Lainey is vastly different.
By the time the CMAs moved Carrie there she was already a decade into her career, had 24 #1s at that time, 5 blockbuster albums, and had been headlining arena tours for 3 tours, and like Lainey is now, was very much the “it girl” and had been for 10 years.
It kind of feels like the argument continues to change when it comes to the criteria, it felt like when GB won in 2016 and 2019 it was because he was headlining stadiums and Carrie was headlining arenas, and seemed very tour focused ,even though there were tons of other boxes that she checked off that he didn’t. Now it feels like the narrative is trying to be changed from that.
I do think some fans to feel it’s premature based on how they’ve handled Carrie is justified, however I don’t think that is a reason to bash Lainey, as the real issue should be with the CMAs waiting so long to put CU there.
(Srry for the long post, I had just been seeing this topic making its rounds on social media, and wanted to give my two cents lol.)

Honestly Garth stole Carrie's most legitimate year to win and it will forever stain the category.
However I have no problem with Lainey being there, and wouldn't mind her winning honestly.
Kane Brown not being in is the biggest head scratcher.

It’s all the more impressive how many nominations and wins Carrie has having never been “in” with the major voting blocs who’ve determined the results for nearly two decades now. Despite the politics which have DEFINITELY worked against Carrie over the years, she’s still a 9-time winner, 5-time FVOTY, and 6 time nominee for EOTY, tied with Barbara Mandrell and Miranda Lambert for the second most EOTY nominations of all women in country music, behind only Reba who has 10 total CMA EOTY nominations to her name. Impressive stuff overall.
I personally find it more impressive to be nominated six times, all after 10 years in the industry, than to be nominated once or twice with a win. Not saying I don’t want the win as a Carrie fan, but bigger picture shows she has done something very few women have been able to do in country music … stay.
A little history of females with CMA EOTY nominations:
10 Noms: Reba McEntire 6 Noms: Barbara Mandrell, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood 5 Noms: Loretta Lynn 4 Noms: Taylor Swift 3 Noms: Dolly Parton, The Chicks, The Judds 2 Noms: Crystal Gayle 1 Nom: Olivia Newton-John, Kathy Mattea, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Lainey Wilson, and if you count these groups; Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland), Hillary Scott (Lady A).
ETA… out of 285 separate nominations (5x57), women have been nominated 55 times (as part of a group or solo, including Sugarland and Lady A)… less than 20%.

It seems to be half way copy/pasted from 2019 (Maren and Kacey) and halfway from 2021 (arguably Carly and Jimmie's breakout years, neither of which would warrant an EOTY...).

Final round voting starts tomorrow. These are not my predictions and I do not envision this happening. These are just things I've thought about. I’d love it if this year we spread the love among the Entertainer nominees so everyone gets celebrated for their wildly different years in 2023. Give Musical Event to Carly and Chris Stapleton. Hopefully it can be a preview of his sweep in 2024. Give Song and Single to Luke Combs for “Fast Car”. Recognize the unexpected resurgence of this classic song in such an unbelievable fashion. Tracy Chapman deserves to be feted for her beautiful songwriting, and the whole team deserves to be honored for this track’s meteoric rise in streams and on the charts! Select Morgan Wallen to walk with Album and Male Vocalist. Now I will say Morgan is just personally not my favorite artist or human by any means…but the album’s sales are undeniable and he has yet to be named Male Vocalist,(by either major country awards show) which is somewhat surprising. I would give Lainey Wilson Music Video and Female Vocalist. She has burst on the scene in a big way in the last 2 years. The Wait In The Truck video is so cinematic it would be a deserved win. And I think she’s had a strong enough year to be the first back to back winner in the Female Vocalist category since 2015 with Miranda Lambert. That brings me to the Entertainer of the Year. I would give this to Carrie Underwood. Carrie is overdue for this award. She is an artist that should have been in the final conversation for a nomination in this category since 2009. She should have won this award once or twice at the very least since 2016. She is the first female to be nominated five consecutive times since Reba almost thirty years ago. The Denim&Rhinestones tour was not just the best show she’s ever done, it was one of the best for any artist! It was a sold out HEADLINING arena tour!!! In addition to her incredible vocals she played the guitar, The Drum Set, performed choreography, and was flying over the crowd!!! Her single OUT OF THAT TRUCK is streaming extremely well! Let’s also not forget her sold out record breaking Vegas Residency REFLECTION!! All that to say I would just like it if she could finally win this award. I apologize I just had to get this out! Thank you for coming to my TED TALK!

Everything Carrie has done in the last 18 years for them to just come in and vote Lainey after only being relavent for 2-3 years(and not even be at level Carrie was in 2008)? Would be a complete disgrace. And its not that I dislike Lainey, I just dont get why they are propping her up to that level this quickly when she isnt even close to being there yet. But in the end, i dont think it will matter, because i think the award is going to either Luke or Morgan anyways.

I know this (likely) isn't intentional on the part of y'all, but lowkey seeing a bunch of Carrie Underwood fans being livid at the mere prospect of Lainey Wilson winning "her" award is the kind of stuff that only helps reinforce the gross misogyny of the country industry. Carrie continually not winning EOTY is unfortunate, but essentially hoping one of the bros wins over Lainey because Lainey hasn't done as much as Carrie in her career is... interesting. Earlier in the thread y'all were mad at Miranda Lambert for her lack of trophies. Now it's Lainey. Focusing y'all's energy in the wrong direction.

I think I was the only one who brought Miranda into it. Only to point out that women continue to struggle in the EOTY category, and that having more than one female nominee (imo) decreases the chances of either winning based on the limited voting pool and how it trends… I’ll be sad to see Carrie lose to Lainey, but it will have nothing to do with Lainey, and I for one would rather Lainey win over the men just because it has been over a decade since a female won. Ultimately plenty of country icons have gone without the CMA EOTY, and things turned out fine for them. Lainey deserves her moment, even if it’s “early on”, because the truth is she’s had the biggest female breakthrough in country music since Carrie. If Lainey does win, I’d like to believe my generation’s favs, Carrie & Miranda, helped open the door for her to achieve such a feat so early. I know Lainey has been working at her music for a long time, but in terms of fame she’s very new to most, particularly in discussions about EOTY.

Theoretically though the awards are supposed to be viewed in a vacuum of the past year. Nothing else *supposedly* matters. (Again Garth's last couple wins....) In looking at the past year Lainey is definitely EOTY material, maybe has #3 best stats in the category.

Theoretically if they followed the guidelines then sure, but I think that's why a lot of Carrie fans are so up in arms about it. Because they haven't really followed the guidelines in the past. Because by that logic Carrie should've been in the category long before 2015 and should have seen a win already. I firmly believe if a win was already held then many of the fans wouldn't be so up in arms about it. I do think the frustration should be more placed on the industry on how they've handled Carrie than on Lainey, because on paper I do agree that Lainey belongs there, it's just how they've handled Carrie, that makes it feel kind of a slap in the face.

To me this reminds me of people who had to pay back student loans who are pissed that others got them taken care of. I 100% get Carrie should have received at least one. But to be rooting for another female not to get it because Carrie didn’t get it seems in poor taste. Again, Carrie should have won it. But if we are going to say other females shouldn’t win it because they can’t make what Carrie was doing when she didn’t win it then no female will ever win it. Go Lainey. Win this. And thank Carrie and Miranda in your speech. Edit: this is not directed at you even though I quoted your post. I think even if we don’t all see exactly eye to eye, everyone is basically on the same page here. :)

^ As long as she doesn't say "Carrie should have won this" because Adele got hate for doing that at the Grammy's when she won for '25' over Beyoncé. Even award speeches are scrutinized these days.

It's been heavily used in the rebranding of her fanclub, and I could see her team wanting to take a risk with the next single. Regardless of what she puts out, I'm sure it'll do well though.
