#20Noriko Sakai – Active Heart Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster OP
Points: 180 SD: 9.31 (9th highest)
samo🦕 – 1 khan – 4 Taiga – 11 Steel Sponge – 12 esportsanime – 15 reputainbow – 17 zippy – 20Trilogy – 22 Zach – 24 willapted33 – 27 singingrulebritannia – 28 wheatsquares33 – 28 My condolences, samo🦕 About the song/anime: So naturally I’d want to include some city pop in a rankdown like this. The problem is, I can’t think of much anime out there with a proper city pop song in it, especially not that I’ve seen (my 80s anime watching is kinda deficit). The Cat’s Eye opening is pretty iconic, maybe you could consider Smile Bomb city pop, I have ONE Tatsuro Yamashita song we’ll see later. But it’s harder than you’d expect to find the classic city pop sound in anime. That said, is Noriko Sakai’s Active Heart city pop? Eh, not really, maybe a bit, but she was a HUGE pop idol in late 80s Japan (she had a run of SIXTEEN top 10 singles from 1987-1990, and a really wild drug scandal in 2009 that got her in a lot of trouble), so...almost close enough given what I’m working with here? This song is a ton of fun too, I love the little “hai hai hai hai” bit so much. Even if it’s not serving the city pop fantasy, I think getting some 80s rep in here is good. Gunbuster is dope, it’s a little 6 episode OVA that really gives you that classic 80s anime experience. It is mecha, but a bit more rooted in its emotions than on the technical side of cool robots like I'd expect (I’m not an expert in 80s mech anime though to compare, esportsanime definitely knows more about this than me). Probably the most notable thing about Gunbuster is that this is directed by Hideaki Anno who would go on to be the mastermind behind Evangelion 7 years later. It’s definitely less...Eva than Eva, but you can see the foundations of what that show would be here. Last episode of Gunbuster is amazing.

#19The Peggies – Stand by Me Sarazanmai ED
Points: 180 SD: 6.77 (7th lowest) Zach – 1 esportsanime – 4 singingrulebritannia – 10 samo🦕 – 12 Trilogy – 12 khan – 14 reputainbow – 14 wheatsquares33 – 15 willapted33 – 17 Taiga – 21 zippy – 21 Steel Sponge – 22 My condolences, Zach About the song/anime: Kunihiko Ikuhara is my favorite anime director, I’m pretty sure. I can’t think of another director (except maybe for Shinbou) who has such a distinct, recognizable style as Ikuhara. Can’t even really describe the Ikuhara aesthetic, but watch a few episodes of Penguindrum or Utena and you’ll get it (I actually think I have a song from every one of his major shows represented in this rankdown series). Sarazanmai is the most recent entry in the Ikuhara canon, and even for him it’s pretty out there. I did end up liking this show because it’s very gay & I’m probably going to like anything with his name attached to it, but um I would not recommend it as a good starting point to get into his larger body of work (or to get into anime at all, the first episode is...crass). The opening by Kana-Boon is eh (planning on having another Kana-Boon song in a later list though), but Stand by Me is great (and an odd instance of a show’s ED outshining the OP in overall popularity as well). The Peggies had a rough start for me, their anime debut was with Kimi no Sei for Bunny Girl Senpai (a song I hate that’s from a show I hate), but following that one up with this one really made me grow to like the band. You don’t get the chilled out shoegaze-y vibe of this song on most of their other work, they are a bit more math-y and punk-y, but I still have grown to enjoy their work. Stand by Me is still by far my favorite though. Great animation for this ED too.

#18GING NANG BOYZ – Shounen Shoujo Sunny Boy ED
Points: 182 SD: 8.66
esportsanime – 2 wheatsquares33 – 3 Zach – 4 samo🦕 – 6 singingrulebritannia – 11 Taiga – 15 willapted33 – 16 khan – 17 reputainbow – 22 Steel Sponge – 23 Trilogy – 24 zippy – 24 About the song/anime: Sonny Boy is an extremely good show. I’m always missing the days of early 2000s experimental anime in the post-Evangelion bubble where anime was weirdand fucked up in an attempt to be the next Eva, to various levels of quality. You don’t see stuff like that often, but Sonny Boy really captured the spirit of that era of anime in a way not much else in recent memory has. One of my favorite shows of the 2020s, if not my favorite. Perfect visual storytelling & presentation. Lots of great music in this series too! Iirc there’s like a different insert song in every episode, and they were all pretty dope, but the ED here is by far the most iconic song from the show. Sonny Boy is a bit interesting in that it doesn’t have the standard opening-ending sequences most anime have. No opening, and no proper ending animation, just this song that plays in the final scene of every episode. And the song is absolutely magnificent & caps off every episode so perfectly. Loved it when I watched the show, but grew to love it even more listening to the full thing for this rankdown. Need to listen to more Ging Nang Boyz! Also just an observation—haven’t done much research on this, but it seems this band has some connection to the creator of iconic trans rep manga/anime series Stop Hibari-kun Hisashi Eguchi? Eguchi is responsible for the character designs for Sonny Boy (there’s like a 40 year gap between the two shows), and a very Hibari looking character is on the cover of GNB’s Young Alive in Love. This is also GNB’s only song to appear in an anime. Weird coincidence or some connection I don’t know, either way kind of interesting.

#17Mob Choir – 99 Mob Psycho 100 OP1
Points: 183 SD: 8.17 Steel Sponge – 5 wheatsquares33 – 8 esportsanime – 10 khan – 15 zippy – 15 Taiga – 18 Trilogy – 18 samo🦕 – 19 willapted33 – 22 reputainbow – 27 Zach – 28 singingrulebritannia – 29 About the song/anime: Mob Psycho 100 openings are pretty consistently good across the board (I never watched season 3, but I think I like that one, I know I’m a fan of the first two). They’re very “anime” sounding songs, but in a way that I mostly like. Season 1’s is just more ICONIC than season 2’s, so that’s what I went with here. The artist for all these Mob Psycho 100 openings is credited as “Mob Choir”, an act that I can’t find out much about it. They’ve only ever done work for Mob Psycho (as their name suggests), so I figure it’s just some studio musicians or something? Idk. As for the show itself, Mob Psycho 100 is one of the most beloved & widely popular anime from the mid-2010s. Like, it’s a show that pretty much everyone loves (I’m not one of them, I think the second halves of both seasons I’ve seen are boring, but I still see the appeal). Incredible animation & art direction in this series, they do some really cool and creative stuff visually on this show, which I really appreciate. Show has lots of charm & good character writing too, I recommend it.

#16LiSA – Gurenge Kimetsu no Yaiba OP1
Points: 183 SD: 7.45
khan – 6 Steel Sponge – 6 esportsanime – 7 samo🦕 – 10 Trilogy – 14 Zach – 14 reputainbow – 15 singingrulebritannia – 19 zippy – 19 Taiga – 23 willapted33 – 26 wheatsquares33 – 27 About the song/anime: Demon Slayer is one of biggest anime series of the last few years (arguably, the biggest, but I’ve only grown more and more out of touch with what the kids are watching the last few years, I know next to nothing about Jujutsu Kaisen, but that may be bigger at this point). And I like the series generally, it took awhile to warm up to me, but I can usually get down with Demon Slayer. The fatal flaw being that I hate overly long fight scenes, which is 90% of what Demon Slayer is, but there are some genuinely cool fights in Demon Slayer, and the show looks fantastic. This is studio Ufotable’s hot new property since they’ve stopped making Fate, and they’ve only continued to hone their cinematic, dense art style since. There’s some scenes in Demon Slayer that are absolutely jawdropping, and that makes the more boring bits worth it to me. The series generally has pretty good music throughout too—Aimer and Lisa, two of the biggest headliners when it comes to anime themes, contribute a lot to this series (plus we love a Yuki Kajiura soundtrack). I LOVE Aimer (we’ll see her later), but Lisa is a bit more hit or miss for me. But that’s just a personal thing, I think it’s undeniable that she was THE voice of mid-2010s anime (namely for her work with SAO and Fate. That one Nisekoi opening goes hard too). She is a good singer, but I’ve always found a lot of her biggest hits to be very “anime” sounding in a way that I don’t usually like. I tried to highlight a lot of different styles & sounds on these playlists, but I should note that like 80% of modern anime music is very uniform—the same sterile symphonic synth instrumentals, the exact same song structures & compositions across the board. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not to my taste a lot of the time, it all blends together. I think you could say Gurenge is kind of an example of this style, but like, it’s a really GOOD example of that style, love the chorus and heavy guitars.

Points: 184 SD: 8.06 Taiga – 7 khan – 8 zippy – 8 Trilogy – 10 willapted33 – 10 wheatsquares33 – 11 singingrulebritannia – 12 Zach – 12 samo🦕 – 24 esportsanime – 26 reputainbow – 26 Steel Sponge – 27 About the song/anime: Tokyo Ghoul is a series with some great music attached to it—I assume most of you are familiar with Unravel, as that song was recently in the 2014 RYM rankdown and is otherwise one of the most significant opening sequences of the 2010s. I love Unravel and by extension TK & Ling Tosite Sigure (I currently don’t have an LTS in this series actually, but that’s subject to change). I think pretty much every Tokyo Ghoul season has some TK/Ling Tosite Sigure opening actually, but I’ve only watched the first season. And the first season’s ED is extremely good all around, even though it’s widely forgotten. Obsessed with the bass on this track, and the kind of starkness with the soft watercolor visuals is such a cool contrast to the show that precedes it. Love this ED. As for Tokyo Ghoul itself ehhh it’s not my thing. I kinda liked the first 5 or 6 episodes of this show because it’s pretty aesthetically strong & fairly interesting for a show of this type, but it really devolved in the second half for me, went entirely off the rails. Manga’s probably better, but I never picked it up, idk. Still, Tokyo Ghoul is extremely popular for a reason.

#14Lia – Tori no Uta Air OP
Points: 187 SD: 9.41 (7th highest)
reputainbow – 2 wheatsquares33 – 2 zippy – 7 willapted33 – 12 esportsanime – 13 singingrulebritannia – 16 Trilogy – 16 Zach – 17 samo🦕 – 18 Steel Sponge – 25 khan – 30 Taiga – 30 About the song/anime: I did, in fact, watch all of Air. On paper, that is something I have done (and fairly recently too, it was late 2021). I literally cannot tell you a thing about the show though lol, it wasn’t great. It’s an adaptation of a Key visual novel, the visual novel group responsible for Clannad, Kanon, Little Busters, etc. Basically any early mid-2000s rom com visual novels with terminally sick girls with eyes that are way too big and random out of place supernatural elements, that’s kinda it (I do fuck with Little Busters & Angel Beats is good too, thought that’s not really Key as it’s not based on a VN, but it is created by Key mastermind Jun Maeda and you can definitely tell). Anyway, as much as I could not care less about the show Air, I do love this opening. Like, it’s just ridiculously good, I am obsessed with this song and the opening sequence itself. Even though these character designs do look fucked up most of the time, there’s just something about the whole look and feel of this opening that’s so good (that one shot of the character riding the motorcycle in the sunset to this song is like PEAK aesthetic). Oh, and about Lia here—she is like THE go-to artist for your Key show. Openings for Angel Beats, Clannad, Charlotte, Kanon, Little Busters (and The World God Only Knows randomly, which is an outlier as its not Key or Jun Maeda, but also a good song—it’s like 8 minutes long and two different parts of that one song are used as openings for two different seasons of the show, which I can’t think of happening anywhere else). Most of these songs don’t do much for me though, so it’s a miracle that Tori no Uta goes as hard as it does.

Outside of this opening for Blue Period, they also did the opening for Horimiya Piece (a show I like, an opening I don’t). Song’s just good. Blue Period is also good! A pretty hard drama about art school students, it’s a really good show (the manga may be better, I own a lot of it but have only read the first volume). Good non-binary rep too through best character Yuka. This isn’t one I have a ton to say about this song or this show—both are good! High recommend for Blue Period.

#12Yasuyuki Okamura – Viva Namida Space Dandy OP
Points: 196 SD: 7.76
zippy – 4 samo🦕 – 5 Steel Sponge – 9 reputainbow – 10 wheatsquares33 – 16 singingrulebritannia – 17 esportsanime – 19 Taiga – 20 Trilogy – 21 khan – 25 willapted33 – 25 Zach – 26 About the song/anime: So, I think this is mostly coincidental, but I included songs from the big 3 of Shinichiro Watanabe adventure shows in this rankdown (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy). Sure Watanabe has other shows under his belt (more recently Sakamichi no Apollon and Carole & Tuesday), but these three exemplify the “gang of bounty hunting weirdos go on episodic adventures” style best. Love all three series too, including Space Dandy which is kinda paid dust for being as fun and inventive as it is. Sure it’s not Champloo or Bebop, but this show isn’t afraid to get weird and has some really great episodes and always has cool, inventive animation. (also, Space Dandy was kinda the first anime I ever watched. Like, I wasn’t even an “anime fan” until like 2016, but I was watching this on Toonami in 2014 before I even realized it was an anime series). Across its 2 seasons, Space Dandy has this one OP by the legendary Yasuyuki Okamura, love this song (he also had a great little duet on Daoko’s 2017 album called Step Up Love which was the ED for Kekkai Sensen’s second season, second time that show’s come up here). Also, we have a good Etsuko Yakushimaru ED here. I love Etsuko, she may be my favorite artist in the anime world, but we’ll see her again later. QT best character, I love him.

#11Yumi Kawamura – Burn My Dread -Spring of Birth Ver.- Persona 3 the Movie 1: Spring of Birth OP
Points: 198 SD: 8.19 esportsanime – 3 Trilogy – 6 Taiga – 8 samo🦕 – 8 khan – 9 Steel Sponge – 14 willapted33 – 18 reputainbow – 19 Zach – 19 wheatsquares33 – 24 singingrulebritannia – 26 zippy – 27 About the song/anime: Obviously, Persona is primarily a JRPG series with an incredibly slick aesthetic and soundtrack across all its games. I love the look and vibe of Persona, unfortunately I’m not a JRPG girly as much as I try to be, I just can’t get down with this style of gameplay. Fortunately, Persona 3 has some pretty good movie adaptations that I like! (Persona 4 and 5 did not get such kindly received anime versions) I really liked this four movie series, if anything these movies made Persona 3 my favorite of the series (as someone who’s never played more than a few hours of a Persona game). Now that does mean that when it comes to including Persona music here (which I think is a must), Persona 3 is the only one I could include by my own self-imposed rules (I’ve been warned against watching the Persona 4 series and dropped Persona 5’s anime halfway through). Fortunately, Burn My Dread might be my very favorite Persona song period, so it works out for me. Vocals & harmonies in the chorus are fire. I’ve always loved the music of the Persona series and how each game’s soundtrack has a vibe that is uniquely Persona, but there’s enough variation in the styles between each game to make them distinct from each other (I think Persona 3’s has the best overall package too cause Lotus Juice is dope). Anyway, I don’t have much recommending that I can do here because if you’re interested in Persona you’re probably interested in the games above watching an anime adaptation of them. But if you’re like me and are too dumb for JRPGs, the Persona 3 movies are good.

I’d argue that I like the latter a tad more than, but that was in one of Red ’s personal rankdowns semi-recently, so I went with the former. This band hasn’t done too much anime work—mainly the songs for Kuuchuu Buranko, the opening for Devilman Crybaby (which is also kind of a banger, very different stylistically), and...an insert song for my favorite anime Eureka Seven apparently (I didn’t know this until now). Kuuchuu Buranko/Welcome to Dr. Irabu’s Office/Trapeze/Flying Trapeze itself is...a very weird show lol, I’m not sure how much I like it, but I think I appreciate it? It’s uh very visually distinct (and I’m a fan of director Kenji Nakamura’s unique brand of weirdness, Tsuritama is one of my all-time favorites). It’s like, an episodic show that’s half animated-half live action where a green bear doctor does some psychological analysis of his patients. Idk, I don’t remember a ton about this one, it’s been awhile and I did not get it. But it has great music!
