#9Zutomayo – 残機 Chainsaw Man ED2
Points: 203 SD: 6.24 (5th lowest)
khan – 5 esportsanime – 9zippy – 10 Taiga – 14 samo🦕 – 15 Trilogy – 17 singingrulebritannia – 18 wheatsquares33 – 18 reputainbow – 20 willapted33 – 20 Steel Sponge – 21 Zach – 29 About the song/anime: Chainsaw Man is a super popular manga & anime from the past few years, I’m sure most of you are familiar with this one. One of the few manga series that I’ve read in full (well, until it came back a few months ago after it originally ended, I haven’t read since then) upon urging from esportsanime . And I thought the manga was...fine. I actually liked the anime more though. If you like gritty, extremely blunt, over-the-top action gore with a cast of big dummos definitely give this series a shot, people love Chainsaw Man for a reason. When it comes to the music of Chainsaw Man, this series actually does something pretty interesting with its openings and endings. The opening song Kick Back is consistent across every episode (I’m sorry, I just do not like Kick Back much at all and there are Kenshi Yonezu songs that I like more, so we’ll see him later), but this show does have an entirely different ED sequence every episode. Sure, it’s not a new concept for an anime to have a different ending theme song every episode (shows like High School of the Dead, ReLife, Dorohedoro did it before), but I can’t think of another show where the animation itself is always different to match up with the song as well. The amount of effort that was put into Chainsaw Man’s EDs is really impressive. I honestly don’t remember most of Chainsaw Man’s myriad of EDs though (but Aimer, Eve, and TK all make appearances which is cool). The first episode’s Chainsaw Blood by Vaundy is dope, but a bit too cringy and butt rock-y for me to represent here (but don’t get it twisted, I love the cringe butt rock quality of that song, you don’t see cringe butt rock in anime enough, frankly). But this Zuttomayo song was an immediate hit for me. That opening bass riff is so good, and it’s just a great pop song all the way through. I don’t think Zuttomayo have appeared in anime too much, but their album from last year was a very good listen, one of my favorites of the year.

#8Oasis – Falling Down Higashi no Eden OP
Points: 217 SD: 7.65 Taiga – 4 reputainbow – 5 willapted33 – 6 singingrulebritannia – 7 Trilogy – 8wheatsquares33 – 9 Zach – 11 khan – 13 Steel Sponge – 15 zippy – 18 esportsanime – 23 samo🦕 – 27 About the song/anime: Performed by a little known indie upstart known as Oasis, Falling Down is one of a few instances we’ll see of a non-Japanese act performing for an anime in this rankdown. It’s a good song. Now did I *have* to include an Oasis song here (that apparently showed up in one of aero’s personal rankdowns that I unfortunately didn’t send for because I was out of touch at the time)? Nah, but I thought it would be some fun variety. I have some other western acts that appear in anime coming up later this rankdown too! Not included: The One by Backstreet Boys (opening for Hanada Shounen-shi), Roundabout by Yes/Walk Like an Egyptian by the Bangles/I Want You by Savage Garden (all from Jojo), Girls on Film by Duran Duran (Speed Grapher), I Ran (So Far Away) by...Bowling for Soup? (Saint Seiya)). A couple notes on other music in Eden of the East—so the official opening is Falling Down, but apparently Funimation had some issues getting that song licensed for the English subbed/dubbed release, so chances are if you try to track down the show down online, the opening you’ll actually encounter is this song by Saori Hayami (who’s the voice actor of the main girl in the show). Also a pretty good track, but it’s just odd how it’s overlayed with the original opening animation (which is INTENSELY 2009 in a way that I really dig). Also, the ED for Eden of the East is Futuristic Imagination by School Food Punishment—which is actually my #1 anime ED of all time and one of my favorite songs of all time, even outside of the anime world. Now, I didn’t include that song here because it was in the 2019 rankdown, and I sent it for Last Stand too, so a few of you have already heard that one). But we will see School Food Punishment at another list anyway (also, maybe there’s a touch of them here? To be continued). Eden of the East is...well, it’s really good but also very frustrating. The anime saw an 11 episode run as a Noitamina show (basically a block of animation that’s usually for artsy, experimental seinen shows that run for 11 episodes) in 2011, and I LOVE the premise. Like, the plot of this series is absolutely brilliant (and I love main guy Akira too). But um don’t get TOO invested I’d say, there’s not much in the way of a good resolution for the story. There’s a couple movies that I think rounds it out a bit, but they’re generally so unliked that I never bothered to watch them. I think I’d still recommend the show though, it’s a good time.

I did not know that Oasis – Falling Down was used for an anime OP back when I did the psychedelic rankdown with aerodynamite. Otherwise I haven’t changed my mind about the song.

#7Shocking Lemon – Under Star Hajime no Ippo OP1
Points: 222 SD: 5.20 (LOWEST)
Taiga – 9 willapted33 – 9 zippy – 11 wheatsquares33 – 12 singingrulebritannia – 13 reputainbow – 13 samo🦕 – 14 khan – 16 Steel Sponge – 16 Trilogy – 19 esportsanime – 20 Zach – 22 About the song/anime: Hajime no Ippo is a classic sports anime with some pretty cool music under its belt. Namely, the first two openings by Shocking Lemon are both great (the 3rd opening is a little weird and not great...it’s the same guitarist that performed the Trigun opening and sounds near identical but about a quarter as good). I like Under Star and Inner Light about equally—Inner Light has a great guitar riff, but I think I appreciate the highs and lows of Under Star a bit more. Just a very dynamic grungy rocker, very good as an opening for this show. Oh, and there’s a decent Coldrain ED in one of the later seasons as well. Don’t know much about Shocking Lemon, seems these Ippo songs are their only anime appearances. Ippo is a pretty recommendable show if you’re in the market for sports anime, especially in a pre-Haikyuu world. It’s a fun watch, I’m just not crazy about the genre to begin with, but a lot of people would argue that Ippo is the greatest sports anime of all time, and I kinda get it.

#6Shin Sakiura f/ AAAMYYY – NIGHT RUNNING BNA ED
Points: 230 SD: 8.43
reputainbow – 1 zippy – 1 willapted33 – 4 singingrulebritannia – 6wheatsquares33 – 6Zach – 8 khan – 10 Steel Sponge – 13 Trilogy – 15 esportsanime – 18 samo🦕 – 20 Taiga – 25 My condolences reputainbow & zippy About the song/anime: BNA is a pretty recent show by studio Trigger (who I don’t think is anywhere else in this rankdown, but will surely come up again later on). While you do get a lot of the signature Trigger style & flare in BNA and I always appreciate an anime that’s for the furries (and BNA might possibly be the most furry anime out there, Beastars probably beats it but otherwise), it didn’t really click for me unfortunately. Had its moments, but never fully won me over. Best thing I got from the show is this ED, I love this song (OP is pretty good too, but Night Running blows it out of the water). No notes on AAAMYYY or Shin Sakiura, they just made a great synthpop banger for a show that I don’t feel too strongly about. Song is damn good, but I don’t have too much to say about anything else here lol.

#5Nujabes f/ Shing02 – Battlecry Samurai Champloo OP
Points: 232 SD: 10.8 (2nd highest)
zippy – 2 Steel Sponge – 3 willapted33 – 3 singingrulebritannia – 4 Trilogy – 4 wheatsquares33 – 4 reputainbow – 6 Zach – 6 Taiga – 12 khan – 19 samo🦕 – 28 esportsanime – 30 About the song/anime: Of all the artists in this list, Nujabes is probably the most well-known & acclaimed in our space (well, I guess Oasis is here too, but that doesn’t really count). I definitely need to make it a point to listen to more Nujabes, all his stuff is absolutely amazing from what I can tell. The body of his work mostly exists outside of the anime space though. In fact, it is kinda weird that the ONLY show Nujabes ever has contributed to is Samurai Champloo. And he didn’t just contribute an opening or an ending, but basically the entire soundtrack. The Champloo experience and aesthetic is basically inseparable from Nujabes’ musical contributions, and Battlecry is, imo, one of the best anime opening sequences of all time. Love this song & the visuals that accompany it. This is the 2nd of the 3 Shinichiro Watanabe shows to be revealed here, and, fittingly, my second favorite. It’s been awhile since I watched Samurai Champloo, but it’s basically always on my radar to revisit. The balance of comedy, drama, and action is really well done, the episodic adventures are always fun, and it just has a great vibe throughout, I’d say it’s another must watch. I think this had a pretty good run on Toonami too, I see people praise the dub a lot (I may have even watched a bit dubbed? Idr)

#4Seira Kagami – Never Kaiba OP
Points: 234 SD: 5.63 (3rd lowest)
wheatsquares33 – 1 Trilogy – 5 willapted33 – 5 reputainbow – 7 Steel Sponge – 7 singingrulebritannia – 9 Zach – 9 Taiga – 10 esportsanime – 11 zippy – 13 samo🦕 – 17 khan – 20 My condolences, wheatsquares33About the song/anime: Never’s another one of my all-time favorite anime songs. Easily top 10, probably top 5. Like, it’s just beautiful & galactic, amazing production. Love the synths. Kaiba’s ED Carry Me Away is also extremely good ambient pop that I featured in the failed rankdown (...I’m not sure why I picked that one over Never, but future me appreciates that I did so I can use Never here guilt free). Seira Kagami is a bit of a mystery to me, she only had a few singles in the early mid-2000s and they’re all really good (I’ve never watched Chaos Head and wouldn’t feature Super Special over Never even if I had, but that song is also incredible & stuck in my head literally 100% of the time), but she kinda just vanished. Which is a damn shame, we deserve a world with more Seira Kagami music. So to talk about Kaiba itself, I love this show. This is another Masaaki Yuasa show (the guy that directed Eizouken a few reveals ago), and one of his best (maybe my favorite overall). Like, when I say that Yuasa shows have very singular aesthetics you won’t see anywhere else, this is mainly what I’m thinking about. These kinda retro character designs, this soft pastel color palette, the cutesiness of everything with the darker sci-fi theming, BEAUTIFUL show aesthetically, and the plot is damn good too (as an eternal fan of weirdo cyberpunk psychological adventures). Definitely give Kaiba a watch, love this show.

#3Yoko Takahashi – Soul’s Refrain Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth ED
Points: 237 SD: 8.70 (10th highest)
Zach – 2 Trilogy – 2 reputainbow – 4 samo🦕 – 4 wheatsquares33 – 5 zippy – 6 willapted33 – 7 singingrulebritannia – 8 khan – 12 esportsanime – 16 Steel Sponge – 18 Taiga – 24 About the song/anime: Here, I have a hot take and a cold take—I don’t like Cruel Angel’s Thesis all that much, but Evangelion has GREAT music across the board. Like, there isn’t another series here that I had such a hard time picking a representative song for—between Komm Susser Tod, One Last Kiss, and Thanatos, there’s a lot of classic, incredible music to come out of the Evangelion franchise. But like, I figured it would be the best route to go with a Yoko Takahashi song since Cruel Angel’s Thesis is THE song of the series, and Soul’s Refrain is amazing (came very close to being my favorite song of a given week quite a few times). Discovered this one from the excellent Evangelion Finally record weirdly, hadn’t heard it before that. And there’s a reason for that—unfortunately, I did not realize at the time I was making this list, but I have actually not (properly) seen the anime that this song was featured in. Breaking my own rules here. This was a credits song for Evangelion Death & Rebirth which is...a recap film that condenses the 26 episodes show and half of End of Evangelion into one movie. I don’t know why this exists, but I never watched it. But I mean, I have watched Evangelion proper twice, so like...I mean, I know the content. Anyway, I think you could probably make the case that Evangelion is the most influential anime series of all time. When you talk about the history of anime, there’s a clear divide in the “before Evangelion” and “after Evangelion” eras. It was that much of a game changer, and it’s well worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. Finally got around to the rebuilds last year too and...mostly found them pretty enjoyable. Not what I expected, but their cool.

#2Kessoku Band – ギターと孤独と蒼い惑星 Bocchi the Rock OST
Points: 257 SD: 5.43 (2nd lowest)
singingrulebritannia – 2zippy – 5 esportsanime – 6 khan – 7 Zach – 7 willapted33 – 8 samo🦕 – 9 Trilogy – 9 wheatsquares33 – 10 reputainbow – 11 Steel Sponge – 11 Taiga – 13 About the song/anime: Bocchi the Rock has been explosively popular online since it aired in late 2022. I guess it’s something about the show’s candid portrayal of social anxiety + dry sense of humor, cute characters, experimental & creative animation that made it really pop for a lot of people online, much more than similar girl band shows that I was speaking about earlier. I am a Bocchi fan, it’s a show that I’ve watched twice and thoroughly enjoy, but it never quite HIT in the same way it did for a lot of people. Still, definitely check it out. Another element of BTR’s success is how genuinely great this music is too. Girl band shows don’t usually go THIS hard all the time. Sure the K-On girls have their moments, but they don’t have a whole album of math rock & emo bangers in the same way Kessoku Band do. Really impressive stuff from this show, one of the few anime ALBUMS I’ve listened to all the way through, and it’s definitely worth your time if you like this song. Also, fun fact about Kessoku Band: while I like to imagine that the characters of Bocchi the Rock are all the actual performers on record (the blonde drummer girl with the big ribbon is my fav), the drummer for Kessoku Band is also formerly the drummer of School Food Punishment (told you they'd come up again--the drumming on Futuristic Imagination is what really takes that song to the next level for me, so I was surprised to learn this!)
1 #1The Seatbelts – Tank Cowboy Bebop OP
Points: 273 SD: 7.91
singingrulebritannia – 1Steel Sponge – 1willapted33 – 1khan – 2 reputainbow – 3 Trilogy – 3 Zach – 5 zippy – 9 samo🦕 – 11 esportsanime – 12 wheatsquares33 – 13 Taiga – 17 Congrats to singingrulebritannia , Steel Sponge , and willapted33 ! About the song/anime: K this one bordered on “too well known for this rankdown series”, but I remember it being requested when I didn't include it the failed rankdown and I don’t recall it ever shown up in another rankdown before so, what the heck. Kind of an obvious winner, but like, Tank is one of the most iconic anime songs of all time, it’s well deserved. Yoko Kanno & the Seatbelts really nailed the soundtrack for Bebop, probably an all time top 10 anime soundtrack (but just between you and me, I kinda prefer Real Folk Blues to Tank). Also, the opening song for the film is pretty good & intensely 90s, featuring Raj Ramayya on vocals (this is the guy that performed the vocals on Underground River from Made in Abyss that was featured in my failed rankdown as well) This is the final of the 3 Shinichiro Watanabe shows in this rankdown, and they really went in ascending order of popularity (and quality). Like, Cowboy Bebop needs no introduction, but it really is as good as it’s made out to be, I love Bebop.

Thank you everyone for sending!! I'm really glad that I was able to bring this to life finally after 4 years of wanting to. I had a lot of fun with it (as you can probably tell by my paragraphs of rambling on every reveal lol).
Again, unsure about the timeline for the rest of the series...think I might go ahead and post the thread, actually and just set a farther out deadline so there's not a huge rush with all the other year-end rankdowns right now.

nice to have such an incredible song get the win here. cowboy bebop is one of the few anime I’ve seen & the music is probably the highlight of the show for me.
my fav anime is NGE & I was happy that a) we ranked something from it here & b) it wasn’t ACT or komm susser tod since we’ve ranked them before

Tank! is a worthy song to win that grew on me a bit since the last time we ranked it.I came into this rankdown thinking Battlecry would probably be my #1 but then NIGHT RUNNING turned out to be such a nice discovery along with some of my other top ranks. Also, Shocking Lemon – Under Star finishing at #7 despite not receiving any top 8 ranks and no bottom 8 ranks is one strangest results I've seen.
