Snippet sounds like a bop and damn that video is gonna definitely be all the rage online on Friday I can feel it. Still don't think he will be able to outperform Ari but #2 seems very much in the bag.

This is all a lot less edgy than he seems to think it is. That's the thing about LNX tho. He thinks his puerile antics are actually shocking and edgy. The only people eating that shit up are fellow edgelords who live on Twitter and people who use him as some sort of folk hero to fight their own corny war against Christianity LOL I get what you mean. I'm all for actual substantial criticism on religion and its effects, but this just looks like a Mad TV skit and his image comes across as more like just a dude in silly halloween costumes, now notably more than before. Which is all great in itself, it looks like it'll be a really fun video again. The snippet is alright, but both Montero and Industry Baby sounded much stronger from the start.

Religion, like every other major institution, is meant to be dissected, deconstructed, and used (or discarded) as needed. Even as a practicing Christian, I can say that I am all for intelligent, thoughtful discourse on the subject. But, that's not what's happening here. It doesn't even seem like that song is about that at all, but rather just using "J Christ" as some kind of token symbol for the clicks and shock value, while LNX continues to do his usual. It's the lowest hanging fruit, but of course, anyone at all disgruntled by religion or triggered by it for personal reasons, will be screaming "YASSSSS KING!! FUCK JESUS!!!!11! RELIGION SUX!!!1!!" til kingdom come and it's oh so tired and played out.

this song/video seems to have more hype and chitchat than Ariana's, imo, so #1 is certainly not out of the question. The video looks amazing!! Bring back videos!

Ironically enough people going on about being bored about Lil Nas going back to the Christianity shock value well for a second time is actually giving him engagement, like he's been trending on Twitter all week and everywhere people are having discussions about him. He really knows how to get people talking.
And that's a good thing because this last year was devoid of anything exciting in music, just boring hit after boring hit. At least Lil Nas X is SOMETHING to talk about right now.

the curiosity spins/views alone...
in terms of Hot 100 points and YouTube, how big of a video would this have to be to gain a sizeable amount of points for the Hot 100 to offset Ariana's likely huge radio deal and streaming debut?

Adele flew to the top tho and Justin waited and waited and finally got that #1 two months later.

I know that surprised me but it also made sense.

I just checked the thread (page 353), and Au$tin said Sorry had an extra day of airplay, so that's probably a reason why he debuted higher, but yeah, they were really close anyway. On Billboard Airplay chart: Hello #35->#19 Sorry #29->#20.

It's just that it's literally THE safest group of people you can criticise (which frankly is a whole discussion in itself because it's very strange when you think about it). I feel like in the 00's a lot of pop stars were probably begging the Westboro Baptist Church like "Please protest against me to make me look controversial" lol. It just makes you more liked and more popular to criticise Christianity, it's a very safe career move with mostly benefits and minimal downsides. Genuine controversy that genuinely outrages a lot of people like with Try That In A Small Town, every pop star will avoid that as if their life depends on it, including Lil Nas X. But other than that I don't really care. And I'm going to have to watch the music video because it looks interesting for sure. The song sounds catchy from the snippet too.

Right. Religion, like every other major institution, is meant to be dissected, deconstructed, and used (or discarded) as needed. Even as a practicing Christian, I can say that I am all for intelligent, thoughtful discourse on the subject. But, that's not what's happening here. I agree on this. Not religious myself, but Christians (along with, I guess Mormons and Catholics) seem uniquely expected to just ignore it or be dared to say something when this kind of thing happens in popular culture. And it happens so often, and with such lack of imagination, perspective or merit that it's boring at best, but an exercise in click-bait trolling and offense-baiting to millions of people in the name of 'shock'. Never has shock been so boring.

Can someone point out how exactly he is insulting a religion? Or why he shouldn't be allowed to? Especially given the religious doctrine he is referencing (and has explictly stated is not mockery), as interpreted by hundreds of millions, is that he is going to an eternal hell once he dies just for uncontrollably being attracted to the same sex

I don’t think anyone here is saying he shouldn’t mock Christianity, but rather that his attempts to be controversial have become reductive, low effort and boring.

I was speaking with a friend last week and saying the actual most 'rockstarr/'shocking' thing he could do would be a sort of praise/pop song in the style of Shackles. Maybe he is.

I was revisiting "Montero" today. Hoping this song lives up to the hype.
