I love Fantasia but that "screeching" is so annoying. My GOD, she's become the Yoko Ono of the R&B world.

The way things went this year... Chris Brown will win album of the year next year, LOL. Next year Clay Aiken is gonna sweep the pop categories!! You just watch y'all Hells yeah! Aiken for male pop vocal... pop album... hell, female pop vocal while we're at it. He's pretty ambiguous...

Ps. Theres a HUGE difference in the White Album and the crap Paul McCartney performed tonight. I don't like that "Fine Line" song, but I think what was a little surprising to me was the attitude some people had here. Yeah, I know he's not relevant to the young audience in general, but there were at least a few that said "he sucks," and that seems a little uncalled for. To be honest, if I was judging McCartney only on that song performance, I wouldn't have a lot of great things to say...

I thought Paul McCartney did a great job with ALL of his performances & I love his album as well. The ageism on this board is atrocious.

Well seems like nobody was the runaway horse this year with the Grammys. Everything was evened out even though U2 winning 2 of the nights biggest awards was pure bulshit!

YES! The Record, Song, Album of the Year awards all went down exactly as I wanted to. A few points now that the West Coast airing is over.
First, I'm so glad to see the Grammy people redeem themselves for screwing over Green Day last year. Granted, it's only one more award (and two overall for American Idiot), but hey, Record of the Year is nothing whatsoever to sneeze at.
Second, let me preface this by saying that U2 is my favorite artist. And How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is a great album. Not their best, but a tremendous effort nonetheless. After they were unjustly screwed in 2002 (they lost to a freakin' bluegrass album for cryin' out loud!), I was hoping this one would redeem it, and bring home that much deserved second AOTY. And then Mariah Carey had to go and have the most improbable comeback in recent memory. So, naturally, I was less than enthusiatic about U2's chances in the generals.
But I guess there was a sense of something in the air in the pregame show, when they won those two rock awards for "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" and "City of Blinding Lights." Then they win Best Rock Album, making them 3 for 3. So I'm thinking "Huh, well maybe they do have a shot at Song and Album." Then they win for SOTY, and I now I'm thinking they just might run the table. And whaddya know.
And 18 years between Albums of the Year, if I'm not mistaken, that's a record, and a testament to just how great these guys are compared to everyone else.
A few other things I have to deal with. First, why was there no host? Oh well, I guess that's all for the better, anyway.
Also, um, Kelly Clarkson won two Grammys. Oooooooookaaaaaay. Then again, I thought that was gonna be an omen for the night, but thankfully it wasn't. (And a side note: it's a damn good thing I'm not a Seahawks fan, and saw Ben Rothlisberger introduce her; to me, that's so the equivalent of being shot in the stomach and getting salt rubbed in the wound.)
And as great as the U2/Mary J. Blige performance was, I have to think Coldplay slightly edged them out for the best performance of the night. Though I missed the first half of it because I didn't want to see Clarkson's acceptance speech, which kinda ticks me off, but you could still tell how much firepower they were carrying.
And Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Paul McCartney. That was, um, interesting.
All in all, I have to say this was definitely one of the more enjoyable Grammy nights in recent memory, especially with their recent history of screwing things up. It's so nice to know that once in a while they can get things right.

Yeah, I realized that after I typed it, but it was still weird in amongst all the other musicians. Didn't Bill Clinton win one two years ago?
Yeah, and Hillary won a couple of years before that. With Obama's win this year, it seems the Spoken Word category is reserved for Democratic politicians.
Oh, and I have to mention what (in retrospect) turned out to be a hilarious joke. On the Late Show with David Letterman, he had a mock Grammy timeline of what happened during the show (this was taped before the Grammys started, of course). One event was that Osama (bin Laden) would win the Spoken Word award for his latest tape. It turns out he was one letter off!

I am thrilled that the GRAMMYs were awarded to these artists. For people who say, GRAMMY always awards U2, this is only their 2nd album of the year award. They received their other award in 1987. Both, All That You Can't Leave Behind and Achtung Baby lost. Personally, I think they deserved all of their awards tonight.
Also, thrilled that Record of Year went to Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It's good great music/lyrics and was a hit song across 6 different charts.
Lastly, I am thrilled that Shakira is now a 2-time GRAMMY winner (with 3 Latin GRAMMYs).

It's just after 2am on the Pacific coast, and I've finally finished watching the show. Damn work.
First off, I'm pretty much happy with how just about everything went down tonight. There were a couple awards that came out of left field, but you can't be right 108 times.
I'm thrilled that U2 won Album of the Year for 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.' I can honestly say that after listening to all 5 nominated albums (yes, Paul's too!), it was between U2 and Kanye in my books. Both had absolutely brilliant discs, and I'm happy to see that after all this time, U2 were awarded for one of the best discs of their career.
Also winning song of the year was no surprise. "Sometimes..." is an insanely personal song, absolutely beautifully written.
I'm a little ticked that Maroon 5 won with a live version of "This Love." I've said it before, and I'll say it again... just give live recordings their own category so that older songs aren't nominated along with songs that really deserve it.
I was shocked that Kelly Clarkson won Pop Vocal album. Don't get me wrong... it's a decent album, but I thought that either McCartney or Stefani had this one in the bag. Guess all those Top 2 hits amounted to something after all.
Best performance of the night came from Kanye West. THAT, my friends, is how you blow the roof off the Staples Center. Coming in second would have to be Paul McCartney's performance. Now, I know "grandpa" (as so many of y'all decided to nick-name him) may not be right up the alley of a lot of people here, but I just found the entire thing enthralling. 'Chaos and Creation In the Backyard' may not be the best disc of his career, and "Fine Line" is far from the best song, but the man knows how to entertain. Bravo!
For all that's said about Ciara, I was pleasantly surprised at her during the Sly and the Family Stone tribute. Along with Maroon 5, they were probably the best part of that fiasco.
It's too bad Sugarland's performance suffered as many technical glitches as it did. I happen to love the group, and I'd have loved to actually hear their performance as it should have been.
I thought Mariah Carey was in some kind of street fight during her performance of "We Belong Together." Seriously! Look at the way she swings that right arm!
The all-star tribute to New Orleans at the end of the show was fantastic, much more so than last year's money-raising disaster. Irma Thomas will forever be a goddess.

Mariah was absolutely AWESOME in FLAB! That was WOW. And the stand-ovation!. Although it was not her best WBT performance (MTV's Sin City-esque hands down), FLAB totally rocked. And the other one perfomance I liked was KELLY CLARKSON. stunning, well-deserved awards!. The other perfs. were meh. Gorillaz was boring and Madonna was not bad but her perf was a copycat of the EMA's. And at U2 sweeping... There are certain people (U2, Beyoncé, Alicia, Norah, etc.) who s**ts and they give them a Grammy for that. I don't think Mariah will win a Big 3 Grammy award until she dies and releases a posthumous album. And about the impact of the ceremony and awards to the sales. I don't see it very big. Probably, this Grammys show was the least-viewed of its history as everybody was watching AMERICAN IDOL and LOST. And U2 album is out of the charts since centuries ago. I think the big winners in sales will be MARY J. BLIGE (along with her Oprah appearence) & KELLY CLARKSON. The others will increase, yes, but not that big. Maybe Mariah will make it to 100k even if she didn't go up to recieve an award but she performed and that is what it counts.

the Grammys were cool especially live in the arena since they were more of a concert then award show lol!!!!!
my favorites live were Mariah, Kanye, Jay-Z/linkin park, tribute to Sly, and kelly Clarkson
all the other ones were cool but these performances were the ones that the audienced enjoyed the most!!! Vocally Mariah was the best that nite, she pretty much gave all she had and spilled it around the arena cause those notes on the climax of Fly like a Bird were incredible, u could have been a blind person in the furthest seat from the stage and enjoyed her performance!!!!
I've watched the performance again on Youtube and she sounds awesome, but trust me she sounded even 10 times more in person!!!!!
i'll post later on the other performances, i enjoyed Kelly alot too! i'm to tired lol i gotta go to bed!!

BTW that album has sold 8 million copies, I think that exceeds U2's albums. Just cause you don't like the bluegrass or country grenre of music doesn't mean it doesn't deserve its wins. Two of the best perfomances of the night came from country, Keith Urban and Faith Hill.

Are you kidding me???? Some of you need to go ask your parents to play you the white album and then come back. Ps. Theres a HUGE difference in the White Album and the crap Paul McCartney performed tonight. Actually I thought for there being a nearly 40 year gap his performance sounded very close to the one on the White Album. Or did you not realize he performed a song off of it?

I love Fantasia but that "screeching" is so annoying. My GOD, she's become the Yoko Ono of the R&B world. SUBG is screaming IMO. I enjoy Kelly's ballards more. I enjoyed the tribute! They were discussing it this morning on Tom Joyner's Morning Show and Fantasia represented. Fantasia looked and sounded good IMO.

If it were about politics, there is NO WAY Clarkson would have won, OR been asked to perform. That was about ratings. They thought the young girls would tune in in mass. Didn't happen. U2 Upstages Carey With Five Grammy Awards By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer Thu Feb 9, 5:38 AM ET
LOS ANGELES - The Grammys finally showed Mariah Carey a little love — with an emphasis on "little." Though Carey, 2005's biggest pop success, had a leading eight nominations and the chance to make history with the most Grammys won by a woman in a single night, she went home with just three trophies Wednesday. She lost in all of the major categories she was nominated for, including record, song and album of the year.
Instead, U2 got all the Grammy glory, as the perennial favorites captured five Grammy awards for their album "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," including album of the year.
"We have to go through certain things in order to appreciate life and learn lessons," Carey said during an interview with the TV show "Extra." Asked how she was doing, Carey replied, "I'm just in a really good, comfortable, happy place."
It was the second time U2 had won the prestigious award (the first was in 1998 for "The Joshua Tree"), marking their 20th Grammy award and their eighth for this album (it won three last year).
"If you think this is going to go to our head, it's too late," U2 frontman Bono said after the group won song of the year for "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own." After winning the night's big award, album of the year, Bono told Carey, "You sing like an angel."
Carey won three Grammys in the pre-telecast ceremony, including best R&B album. But the evening still seemed bittersweet for Carey, who had the year's best-selling album with "The Emancipation of Mimi" and its most popular song in "We Belong Together." She was nominated for album of the year, and song and record of the year among her other nominations, but won nothing during the televised ceremony.
"I think winning three is a huge achievement," said British soul singer Joss Stone. "I think winning eight is a ridiculous thing. I can't imagine winning half a Grammy let alone three. She went through a lot, and everybody knew it. She's come back on top."
The wins marked Carey's first Grammys since she was a fresh-faced ingenue in 1990, winning two awards that year, including for best new artist. In the years that transpired, Carey has more than lived up to the promise of that trophy, becoming one of the best-selling artists of all time.
But personal and professional stumbles a few years ago made many wonder if she would ever be a blockbuster artist as she had in the 1990s. Carey proved her doubters wrong with her stunning comeback.
Besides losing album of the year to U2, Carey lost best female pop vocal performance to Kelly Clarkson's triumphant "Since U Been Gone," song of the year to U2 and record of the year to Green Day. Clarkson also won the award for best pop album.
"I'm sorry I'm crying again on national television," said the former "American Idol," tearful and shaking as she held her first Grammy. "Thank you so much, you have no idea what this means to me."
John Legend won three awards: best new artist, best R&B album for his debut, "Get Lifted," and best male R&B vocal for the piano ballad "Ordinary People." His mentor, Kanye West, also won three, including best rap album for "Late Registration."
"I had no idea, I had no idea," West said in mock shock as he pulled a huge sheet of paper that read "Thank You List."
A highlight was the appearance of Sly Stone, the mercurial, psychedelic soul-rock pioneer who disappeared from the music scene decades ago and hadn't performed in public since 1993.
Toward the end of a sizzling all-star tribute to Stone, the man himself emerged, sporting a blond Mohawk against his 61-year-old brown scalp, and made his way through "I Want To Take You Higher." Though the tribute was planned, many didn't expect Stone to show up.
"I think we just got upstaged," said Keith Urban, who was standing backstage and saw the performance begin playing on a nearby monitor. "Everything pales in comparison."
Former Beatle Paul McCartney was featured in the night's most intriguing mash-up, walking onstage to sing "Yesterday" with rockers Linkin Park and rap mogul Jay-Z.
Alison Krauss & Union Station also had three awards, including best country album, while Stevie Wonder, who released his first album in a decade last year, had two.
A brief, impromptu performance by Wonder and Alicia Keys was the first to energize the crowd. Wonder pulled out his harmonica and the two soulfully sang his classic "Higher Ground" as a tribute to the late Coretta Scott King, who was buried Tuesday.
"Let's keep trying to reach that higher ground," Keys said. "I forever want to reach that higher ground."

My favorite last nite.. Kelly - loved that version of BOY.. She is so adorable.. and I agree with the post that said if it WERE about politics she would NOT have won. Kanye/Jamie- that was very creative with the bands battling and the stepping at the end was so cool. :) JayZ/Linkin Park/Paul - Loved it.. JayZ ooooozes coolness. Mariah - gotta give it to her.. She gave it her all! Fantasia/Maroon 5? - I love how they sounded and I think her "yelling" is signature..

How come nobody is talking about Chrissy A's performance?
I thought She was in great voice, probably the best voice place of the night. But she oversang as usual. Girl's gotta learn some more restraint.
Mariah sucked on WBT but redeemed herself on FLAB. Jesus, the flailing arm thing has got to stop. She is surely gonna knock out one of her band members one of these days.
Paul M. The vertigo swirlies on the Piano thing in the first song had me snoozing. You rocked with the second performance though.
Jamie and Kanye. WTF?
Kelly C. So sweet and genuine. Somebody give her a cookie!
How come nobody remembers any of the country music performances? I do. Nicole Kidman was hot!
Sly Stone had me scurred. Dude has no neck.
Madonna & Gorrilaz moment = overated hype. Madonna Hung Up moment - okay (the reported 3 weeks of rehearsals didn't show one bit). Why didn't she perform Sorry?
Fantasia needs to get her tongue pulled out. Screaming is not singing. Who the heck was that Lima bean boy? Joss Stone blows. John Legend had a hot jacket. I want that. That was the highlight for me.
Jay/Linkin Park = RULES!

I'm so glad Kelly won both awards, I wish Gwen had got something. But Kelly was so heartfelt and I know they meant a lot to he. I didn't think Mariah w ould sweep and she didn't. U2 was too overrated though.
Best performances were Kelly BOY and Mariah FLAB and whatever Christina was singing. Mariah sounded shaky on WBT but made it up in FLAB. GD was just weird for me. It was nice to see Fantasia there too.

Overall the grammys sucked again. They always do. I haven't seen one that had great performances and the awards went to right people. It has always been out of touch and always will be.
The best one in recent memory was in 1999 (where Ricky Martin performed, Lauryn Hill was best album of the year, and Madonna finally won some grammys)
That being said, I thought Madonna, Kelly Clarkson, Kayne West, and Christina Aguerila had the best performances.
Mariah Carey needs to stop trying so hard. She tries to top herself so much that the singing suffers sometimes.
And all of the group performers were awful....and that finale was just gross!!!!!!

^I don't think anyone really cares anymore about award shows lol. I agree, but the media loves discussing the grammies and everyone is going on and on about her getting overshadowed and upstaged and bla bla bla, had they televised her other 3 wins, she would have been the 'darling' of the show apart from u2.
