Kanye just said that he was cool with not winning and that when he didn't hear his name called, it just made him want to go back to the studio and work harder. That's awesome - he sounded normal - maybe this loss cut off that egotastic stuff. Also, Bono said Kanye's performance was the best of the night!!

Kanye got some sense knocked into him? way cool! I guess people can mature!! of course, people with three Grammys in one night normally don't have anything to be angry about :)
seems like last night was mostly great all around.

Bono has no taste if he thought that was Kanye had the best performance of the night.

I'm still shaking my head at how few awards were actually given out on TV. Only 11? I know they can't do too many, but curious as to which ones you would definitely add to the list. I think they should pair up the awards. If they televise best pop female song, they should also show best pop male song, etc.

Well, if they didn't have the artist introduction to the performances with those clips before the performance, and they didn't have that period of 30-40 minutes where they just performed music then I think they could have added 3-4 more awards to the show. I was disappointed that the Country and Urban formats which showed the most radio growth were not represented better at the Grammys in terms of presentation.

I didn't see the show but I heard the live version of "Gold Digger" as performed at the Grammys on WWYL and it sounded great. Was it as good to see it on TV?

I loved the whole drumline and steppers! I think someone mention a few pages back it reminded me of Spike Lee's School Daze.

Clarkson Surprises With Grammy Performance news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060209/ap_en_...HNlYwMlJVRPUCUlBy JAKE COYLE, AP Entertainment Writer 1 hour, 33 minutes ago Early on during the Grammy Awards on Wednesday night, Kelly Clarkson bested music industry veterans Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt to win the best female pop vocal performance award for her mega-hit "Since U Been Gone." When she performed less than an hour later on the same stage where she tearfully accepted that award, the choice of song seemed obvious. Except it wasn't. Instead of belting out "Since U Been Gone" — one of the best 3-minutes of angst-ridden pop that mainstream music has produced in a good while — Clarkson sang her ballad, "Because of You." The former "American Idol" — of all people — should have known that song choice is everything. Wearing a beautiful, flowing red dress, Clarkson (introduced by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Rothlisberger) strode out from beside a grand piano, singing with a strong, confident voice: "Because of you, I never strayed too far away from the sidewalk. ... Because of you, I am afraid." Could she have been thinking of Simon Cowell? While the performance was perfectly fine, it felt a little reminiscent of those many mediocre, superficial ballads trotted out on "Idol." Speaking of which, "Idol" was one word she didn't utter while accepting her pop vocal award.

This was the first year since 1999 that I didn't watch the Grammys. I really had no interest...and I was kind of busy.

I can NOT believe that people are complaining they don't hand out enough awards. I HATE awards shows. The ONLY reason I watch the Grammys at all is for some standout performances. I personally think they are going in the right direction, no host with stupid cheesy comments, fewer boring acceptance speeches, all good.
I might actually watch next year for that very reason.

Does anyone any info about the awards that are given out prior to the telecast? Is there an audience for this ceremony? Do artists actually accept the awards? Is there a webcast of this ceremony? If not, why?
And it's not like I want to see a lot of more acceptance speeches. But I do think that those who have won Grammy's prior to the telecast should get some on-air recognition. Perhaps scroll their names, like they do for the "dead" people. It's just a shame that someone can win multiple Grammy's earlier in the day and get shut out during the telecast and the perception to the viewers is that they're a big loser. The other night they read the name of Producer of the Year and had him stand up, which was nice. They can't do that for everyone obviously. Just seems like they could cut one performance to fit in more recognition of that year's Grammy winners.

Well said Northcoast. I certainly don't want to see more long acceptance speeches (yawn!), but I feel like a lot of big winners were denied even a little moment of glory.

I heard yesterday on the radio that Sly Stone was in an accident a few weeks ago and was badly injured and that's why he had a bandage on his hand. He is supposed to be on oxygen and that's why he left the stage so quickly. He was wearing a back brace under his jacket as well. The man is in bad shape and it's a wonder that he was able to go on stage at all.

Just now getting here.
Mariah - "WBT" was passable, but "FLAB" was amazing. Thankfully the media are actually giving her credit, as her performance has been singled out a lot as one of the best (if not the best) of the night. From Entertainment Weekly to Entertainment Tonight to BET to Barbara Walters to Vanessa on TRL to Slant to more, I've seen a ton of praise.
Kelly - Good for her for winning a few, and her performance was good as well.
U2 - How annoying was it that Bono had to give us a running tally of their wins/losses? I think he did that a few years ago, too. Sorry you've lost AOTY twice, Bono. Try talking to Mariah; she's lost AOTY three times, ROTY three times, and SOTY twice. You've won all of those categories twice, so shut up.
Christina - Her performance was good technically, but she really brings no emotion to that song.

I'm so happy for Mariah! She walked away with an award for her vocal performance, her songwriting, and her album. Go MC! And plus, the media didn't bash her at all like I expected and she was actually mentioned as a big winner on most aritcles I read!

Very happy Maroon 5 won for This Love. I know it's old but that song made their career. Hey, I've been meaning to ask about this. Why the hell was this nominated in the first place when it was released way before the eligibilty period? When I first saw it, I thought they made a mistake and actually meant "Sunday Morning." Did they re-release it when we weren't looking or something?

Christina - Her performance was good technically, but she really brings no emotion to that song. the same for Mariah and Mary J. Blige..none of them sang, they screamed. Their performances were so scary. Even though I don't like Whitney Houston, I must say her performances were always full of emotions. Kanye, Madonna, U2 and Kelly were the best of the night.

How come Maroon 5 won for "Best New Artist" in 2005 when they released their debut album, "Songs About Jane" in 2002?
It reall makes no sense that just because they hadn't hit the big time in 2002/03 and did in 2004/05 that it seemed to have been acceptable.
Because of that reason Kanye West was robbed for "Best New Artist" considering he was the best artist nominated that year that was actually elligible.

How come Maroon 5 won for "Best New Artist" in 2005 when they released their debut album, "Songs About Jane" in 2002? I believe Best New Artist criteria is not based on the year your first album comes out but the first year in which a band makes an "impact" (how that is defined is subjective) on mainstream music. In that sense, then Maroon 5 would have been eligible.

It was her large amount of grammy nominations that made the public notice her at first.

The bigger stars aren't usually there because they are walking the red carpet or whatever, but a lot of the genre winners are there to accept. VH1 used to show the ceremony, but they stopped a few years ago. I remember Brandy rushing the stage when she and Monica won for "TBIM."
