It's finally time to start counting down my top 100 songs for 2006. This year was one that was quite different for me with my big move over the early summer and lots of work toward my Ph.D. That unfortunately meant that a lot of my charts were far behind and I had to spend many hours just trying to catch up every few weeks. I am hoping to stay on top of things from now on to prevent these things, and most importantly, I hope that this past year is not an omen for the possible demise of my chart, something that I have enjoyed doing since 1999.
Anyways, we are up to the guessing game. But before we get to that, let's first present the "just misses" of the chart. Take a guess at these to try warming up for the top 100. As in years past, I will use "CS:" at the beginning of clues for Christian radio songs that charted only on Christian radio format charts. If the song charted on Christian radio and went for adds/charted on a mainstream chart, then there will be no "CS:" added to the clue.
Let's start the warm up.
105. Not a Hall & Oates remake but instead a "flop single" for this artist. Nelly Furtado - Maneater
104. Holdover from 2005. It was the lead single from this sun-loving artist's latest release. Sheryl Crow - Good Is Good
103. CS: This Christian CHR/AC fav's lead single from their latest album. This band did enjoy mainstream success back in the mid-90s with one song. Jars of Clay - Dead Man (Carry Me)
102. CS: The name of this song is also the name of a certain Latin singer/dancer/actress' only hit on the mainstream AC chart. Rebecca St. James - Alive
101. There was apparently some confusion over this pop artist's last single from her latest album. The choice was this one, which received small airplay in big markets like Atlanta and Boston, or the other one - the record company chose the other one, which turned out to be a huge success. Kelly Clarkson - Gone

Hmm, either no one wants to guess or the clues are too tough. picpak got one right, but 101 is not Beyonce. Unfortunately, that song came out too late to accumulate points to make it this high.
Here are some easier clues:
104) In the chorus of this song, the lyrics actually describe a meteorology faux pas - thunder always follows lightning, not the other way around.
103) The older hit song I mentioned in the previous clue references a great Biblical disaster that destroyed the world. That should give you the group.
102) The artist's name is three words, the last two being quite holy.
101) The title of the song is the same as this surprise top 10 Urban hit in 2001 for this group that you wouldn't think would be on the Urban chart at all.

103. Jars of Clay - "Dead Man (Carry Me)" (so low?!) That's the song. Yes, it is quite low because I charted it late and so the number of times I heard it dwindled. Still one more song to go before the real challenge. The second clue was supposed to help out, but maybe another change in the clue will do you good. ;)

104. Sheryl Crow- "Good Is Good" YES! Good work. Now let's start the top 100! 100) A current big pop hit has a title very close to this pop hit from eariler this year. Both have to do with doing something on a club dance floor (or maybe in your personal space. ;)) Eminem f/ Nate Dogg - Shake That99) CS: First of two hits by this Christian rock band. It was the last single from their album Fight The Tide. Sanctus Real - Closer98) An anthem of sorts for women, led by this artist, one of SNL's more memorable guests. ;) Ashlee Simpson - L.O.V.E.97) The video for this song shows the lead artist in an infommercial trying to sell a product related to the song's title. Bubba Sparxxx f/ The Ying Yang Twins - Ms. New Booty96) This song is still climbing my chart now. Think income. Ludacris f/ Pharrell - Money Maker95) Life isn't that simple for this actress turned singer. This song was a quick riser/descender on the charts. Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind94) CS: Carryover from 2005 by a Christian band who, in other songs, have asked about their identity and what would happen if more people prayed. This song was the lead single from their sophomore album. Casting Crowns - Lifesong93) When this artist released this single so close to the one prior, I thought it would be a mistake. But, it's #1 status on the pop chart this past year surely made that decision justified. Justin Timberlake f/ T.I. - My Love92) The artist is prancing around the woods in this not-so-popular followup to the artist's debut hit. James Blunt - High91) One of our more popular political posters predicted this hit would be an instant #1 for this new solo artist across the mainstream charts (pop and HAC). The pop prediction was way off. Rob Thomas - Ever The Same

All are right except #99 and 98, though you got the right artists for both.

Correct answers given were:
98) Ashlee Simpson - L.O.V.E. 93) Justin Timberlake f/ T.I. - My Love (the key was the word "justified", which hinted at JT's first solo album). 92) James Blunt - High 91) Rob Thomas - Ever The Same
Here are a couple of easier hints for the other ones.
100) I can see how you could lose yourself in the wording of the last clue. Here's an extra hint though - the song is from the artist's greatest hits album.
99) The right artist was already given. You guys are getting so much cl... oops ;)
97) Some posters were upset that this artist's former pop release a couple of years ago didn't do much better, as they felt that was this rapper's best release.

100. "Shake That," Eminem f/ Nate Dogg 99. "Closer," Sanctus Real (probably not guessed because it feels like it's more from the Narnia CD than from Sanctus Real's)

Yes what you say is true, but Closer was the final release from Fight The Tide, so it's all good. And #100 is indeed Shake That (the other song that has a similar title is Smack That). No guesses for #97. Don't make me get ugly with these clues.

97) hmm... Bubba Sparxxx f/ Ying Yang Twins - "Ms. New Booty" (?) Ummm.... that's right! :) 90) CS: The name of this group is a bit of a misnomer - it implies opposite directions. The song's title is what the streets would be on clear nights. Falling Up - Moonlit89) I wonder if the artist took French when they were in high school. Beyonce f/ Jay-Z - Deja Vu88) First of two hits on the top 100 for this big 90s band. The song went top 10 on HAC and top 50 on pop, though it entered the pop chart twice. Goo Goo Dolls - Stay With You87) This song had two titles - one for the radio edit, the other for the original. The only difference was in the parenthetical, however. Sean Paul - We Be Burnin' (Legalize It)86) This song describes the desire to have an out of body experience - sort of. It really expresses the need to be closer to a high power. MercyMe - So Long Self85) A holdover from 2005, this song is by an artist who has a former 90s hit that is constantly used as LDDs. The artist continues to have strong showings on the AAA chart, and to a lesser extent, the AC chart. This one charted only on AC. Eric Clapton - Say What You Will84) You might want to check 59th and Broadway to see if this exists. Rob Thomas - Streetcorner Symphony83) CS: The name of this band is something that can be a bit... manic at times. This is by far their biggest hit, including #1 on the Christian CHR chart. Monday Morning - Wonder of It All (Next Year)82) First of 3 hits for this pop-alternative band from their sophomore album. The song's chorus is actually quite simple and clear - the moon gives way to the sun and night is over. All-American Rejects - It Ends Tonight81) CS: A Christian rock band that has been around for almost a decade, the band in the last couple of years has also crossed over to the Active Rock chart. This song was their first single from their latest album and shot to #1 on the Christian rock chart. Skillet - Rebirthing

Only #89 is correct out of the guesses above. However, the artists for #88 and 82 are correct.
I'll wait a little longer before posting more hints.

82. All American Rejects "It Ends Tonight" (Currently charting in my top ten!) 88. "Stay With You," Goo Goo Dolls Those guesses are correct. (Note: For #82, the "first of 3 hits" means this is this first time that All-American Rejects are on the countdown - they have two more hits coming up later). Here are some additional hints: 90) If you trip, you would probably land on your face. But, according to this band's name, you would go towards the ceiling. 87) Maybe if I could get people warmer to this artist's followup hit to this song, it would help a bit. 86) I can only imagine how much trouble folks are having with this clue. This is one of those songs that could have had a "CS" in front, but it did chart on a mainstream chart. 85) The immensely popular LDD I referenced was written about the death of the singer/songwriter's son. The song in question charted only on AC. 84) 59th St. and Broadway meet. So do millions of other streets in NYC and throughout the world. Where they meet is called a .... 83) This song had a parenthetical with it - (Next Year). 81) Diehard fans of this group are often called "Panheads."
