Anyone else get it? Overall I think it sounds great. It's not much different from your typical DMB album, but there are some interesting touches. My favorite tracks so far are "So Damn Lucky", "Dodo", "Stay Or Leave", "Some Devil" and "Gravedigger". I love the bonus disc with the special edition too. It's like a mini-sequel to Live at Luther College. Can't wait to see the band in Central Park tomorrow.

Tony,
Dave (DMB rather) is my favorite band of all time. I'm obviously interested in Some Devil for that reason, but I'm hesitant to buy it right now because I don't like "Gravedigger" at all. Is the whole album that bluntly dark? I guess I can always DL it before I buy it...
I'm so jealous you get to go to the Central Park concert. I'm so pissed I'm at school right now.,.. if I were home I'm sure my friends and I would be there in a second. Be sure to report on it.

I love "Gravedigger" and think it ranks among the best on the album, but I can see why some people might not like it. That said, the whole album is definitely not like it. "Save Me" is in the Everyday/Stay (Wasting Time) vein, "Stay Or Leave" is a killer ballad, and there's just a great variety. The main difference from a typical DMB album that I see (besides the lack of the other band members) is the use of an orchestra on several of the songs. Too bad you can't make it to tomorrow's show. I'm completely excited and can't wait. I'm actually skipping class to make it.

Alright you definitely sold me on the album. I don't know if I'll buy it right now, since my credit card is practically maxed :( and I really don't feel like using my own cash to buy it LOL. Summer is over and I no longer have a job. But I definitely think I'll pick it up sometime soon. The orchestra thing sounds really interesting. In the meantime I'm going to DL Stay or Leave and Save Me.
About the concert, I'd say that definitely falls under an event big enough to skip class for without feeling any guilt. Shit, I know I'd go without any qualms. Also, tomorrow is supposed to be a perfect day in terms of weather.
Although off topic here, I thought I'd tell you I'm going to my first John Mayer concert... he's playing here at Penn State on Halloween.

Also try downloading the title track and "So Damn Lucky". My friends and I were going to stand outside all day and wait to get in, but everyone couldn't leave at the same time, so we're all leaving together at 4:30. My apartment will be filled with the sounds of DMB until that time. LOL. Let me know about the Mayer show. I haven't seen a show in a long time. My last live experience, while musically excellent, was ruined by the hoards of 12-year-old screaming girls. Did you pick up Heavier Things?

>:( I tried DLing the songs several times and I either get a blank mp3 or a live version of "Where Are You Going." Guess I'll have to be a little more patient. About the 12 year old girls, yeah they always ruin concerts. I seriously get ticked off when that happens, although I've had a far worse concert experience than that. The Coldplay concert I went to was ruined by two gay couples sitting directly in front of us who I swear were giving each other handjobs right there in Radio City. I hate PDA of any kind, but I think that's taking it wayyyyy too far. My friends and I actually had to leave the concert for 20 minutes right in the middle of the set because we couldn't stand the site. I was extra pissed because I brought my younger sister and one of her friends along with us that night too. As much as I love Coldplay, I don't think I can ever go to one of their concerts again. Sorry to bring up that story here, I guess it's one of those things you can never get off your chest enough lol. Anyway, I haven't got Heavier Things yet, but I've heard it a few times already. I'm loving "Split Screen Sadness" right now. Now taht I'm going to the concert I'll definitely become more familair with the whole CD. Since this place is about 95% college students, I thankfully won't have to worry about 12 year old screaming girls!

The concert was amazing. Aside from the logistical nightmare of actually getting inside the Park (we didn't make it in until the band was playing their fourth song), it was a great experience. From what I've read there were 90,000+ people there.
This was the setlist:
Donβt Drink the Water So Much To Say Too Much Granny Crush When The World Ends Dancing Nancies Warehouse Ants Marching Rhyme & Reason Two Step Help Myself Cortez The Killer Jimi Thing What Would You Say Where Are You Going All Along The Watchtower
Encore: Grey Street What You Are Stay
Also, One Day sales of Some Devil have it heading for 450K and a shot at #1, demonstrating once again that Dave's fans come out regardless of radio support.

That sounds like an amazing setlist. A lot of Crash material which is my favorite. Glad he did "Two Step," as always I would have been disappointed that he didn't do "#41." I wonder why they don't perform it as much as they used to... I mean I know it's just an album track from like 3 albums ago, but still it is very much a fan favorite.
Also, what's "Cortez the Killer"? Where's it from?
Aside from the music, what was the whole scene like? Man I wish I coulda been there.
Great news about album sales.

Alright, I gave in and bought this today... along with Outkast. I put them on my credit card that i don't pay for LOL. Anyway, I haven't got to listen to it so far past "Dodo" but I like that song a lot.
I'll give my thoughts tomorrow after I listen to the whole CD.

Here's my take on it now: "So Damn Lucky" is my favorite on the album as of now. It just has a really nice vibe. "Some Devil" and "Trouble" are both good songs too, but they didn't stand out all that much on first listen. (I've only listened to the album once as of now) "Grey Blue Eyes" seems really bluegrass falvored. It's alright. it sounds like O Brother, Where Art Thou music which isn't my cup of tea but because its Dave I like it more than I usually would. Next comes "Save Me" which is my other favorite song here. I agree that it's in the same vein as "Everyday" or "Stay (Wasting Time)." "Stay Or Leave" is pretty good. "An' Another Thing" - ugh why is he singing like Betty Boop? It's ruining what would be a perfectly good song. I really, really love the next block of 4 songs. "Oh" and "Baby" are beatiful ballads. "Up and Away," okay this may be my new favorite on the album. I love the reggae feel...Dave & Trey = good combo "Too High" is also great... sounds like its from the Before These Crowded Streets era. ________________________________________ Overall thoughts: Pretty good album. You can tell the Band is missing though, it doesn't really "jam" so to speak, just on "Up and Away." I also think Dave's voice isn't the strongest... he seems kind of high-pitched. I also notice the orchestral inclusion here and there, and I like that. Also, some songs seem a little underproduced. I hate using that word too. LOL. I made 3 consecutive posts in this topic.

Let me preface this by stating that I will not be purchasing this album... and Gravedigger is horrible.
What I don't understand is why Dave had to do a solo project when, from what I have heard, the album sounds JUST LIKE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND!!!! Urgh, that is why I find it so ridiculous...

Jersey Boy, who has listened to the album, says that the band is noticeably missing. So not everyone feels that way, and therefore, it's not ridiculous.
Matthews said in Spin that he had written a few songs that didn't "fit the mold", and felt that doing something that was truly his own was "sort of intimidating and enlightening". "It seemed like this was something that if I didn't do, I'd be less able to bring something to the band...The eperience made me look forward to playing with them more than ever."
So that should take care of that.

Also, what's "Cortez the Killer"? Where's it from? Aside from the music, what was the whole scene like? Man I wish I coulda been there. It was actually a song that featured Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes. I believe it was a cover of a Neil Young song. Overall the crowd could have been better. When we were towards the back of the crowd, it was very subdued with people just standing still and not making much noise, but it got better as we manuevered our way through and got closer to the front.

Entertainment Weekly gave this album a B- I don't take their reviews seriously at all though, they're always based on one person's personal opinion... not really a critique of the album. Now along with the review, they have 6 DMB albums listed labeled as either "Get" or "Forget." This REALLY burns me up... this is what they said about the Crash album: FORGET. The album's inevitable breakthrough balled, "Crash Into Me," helps to transform Matthews into a mainstream hitmaker. "I Want To Much," he sings, and the slick production and ambitous but unfocused song writing prove the frontman correct. C+
