In 2001/2002 a new trend started when artists who didn't need to be sexual were doing well on the pop charts and passing artists who were showing off a lot of skin. For example in those years Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were out, while artists like Pink, Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton were topping all the charts.
Now in 2003 it seems that "Sex Sells" is back in, as Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and Beyonce are at the top of the charts once again while Pink, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, and Vanessa Carlton are nowhere near the top for the most part. Is "Sex Sells" back in? Was this whole "Rocker chick era" only a phase?

I just feel like the charts are getting to be more like they were in the late 90's.
After no Pop on the charts for awhile, we have Stacie Orrico in the Top 10 and Britney about to get there.
Matchbox 20 and Jewel both defied the 90's curse of the past few years with Top 10 summer hits.
The current Top 10 is Hot AC dominated.... 3 Doors Down, Fountains of Wayne, Santana, Trapt (well, Rock), Maroon 5, etc. There would not have been this many songs from this genre in the Top 10 a year ago. Most of these songs could have been hits in 1998 or 1999.
The ballad is also making a comeback... "The Voice Within" is reminiscent of old-school Mariah.... ballads did not have a place on the charts for the past few years.
The trends are changing!

Vanessa and Avril haven't released a single in over nine months, so you can't use them as a measuring stick.
The market was somewhat overstaurated with rock girls. Lucy Woodward, Lillix, Liz Phair, Michelle Branch, etc. that they were taking away airplay. So, to a point, you may be right. However, I think Avril's next album will be the true test of whether your theory is true or not.

I always thought it was interesting that with massive airplay and promotion, none of the rock chicks have really taken off-Not anywhere close to what britney/Christina/all of them did. (with the exception of Avril, but I think Avril...well I wont get into her) Im getting a little tired of the Im a rock chick with a guitar and I dont take my clothes off so I rock genre. Its very same soundey to me (not that I dont enjoy some of the songs)

With radiorules' logic I could make a topic called "Is rhythmic music out?" because it's declined in the past few months.

I agree, i think the "I'm a rock chick, and i am better than those that take off their clothes" is getting rather old and predictable, so people are going back to the "I am a pop chick who takes off her clothes and if you have a problem with it go kiss my ass" girls.

That is actually bad news believe it or not. Whomever said she was punk on this album was WAY off. She is some mellow fluff something or other on there. It's like she just mailed it in on this one. Few demonstrations of her powerful vocals can be found. I bought this off of liking Trouble and it is the best song on there. Ugggh. If it sells poorly, maybe she should think about actually working on her music a little the next time.

Misundastood sold about that much its first week and has gone on to become the third biggest selling album by a female artist in the last three years behind Avril Lavigne & Norah Jones. five million total. You can't judge an album's success after one week of sales and one single. You of all people should know that, as somebody else also started off a bit slow anout a year ago, but has over the course of the past year turned out a successful album.

I agree, but I also think depending on how well "God Is A DJ" performs will be linked to the fate of this album. Kind of like Santana's "Shaman", when "The Game Of Love" kept the album stable but "Nothing At All" flopped miserably and the album tanked off the former half of the Billboard 200. By the time "Why Don't You & I?" became ahuge hit now, it hasn't made an appearance in the Top 100 still. If "God Is A DJ" also falters, the album will go down with it and almost nothing can then pick it up. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Personally, I think Trouble was her best shot at a big hit. Maybe I'm bitter because I just bought the album and I'm disappointed, but dang, it just isn't very good.

Isn't it weird that the girls that don't shed their clothes are considered "rock chicks" that write and play instruments while the ones that do shed their clothes sing rhythmic/pop and rarely play an instrument and don't always write? LOL!!

If you're talking about who I think you are, then she still sold over DOUBLE the amount Pink is expected to in her opening week. And that was with a similar floppy single, but yeah, I see what you're saying. "Try This" could still do well, but if her next single does nothing, the album will be done with.

Who are your favorite rocks chicas? Here are mine: -Angela Ammons (was on GOLD soundtrack "American Pie 2") -Carly Hennessy (front page of "Wall Street Journal"!) -Laura Dawn (had theme song to Fox's "girlsclub") -Lindsay Pagano (MILLIONS have heard her song!) -Aja Daashuur (I saw her at Cerritos College) -Kristin Candy (forgot who she is, but Radical told me about her and I saw her album for $1 at Amoeba!) -Lucy Woodward (big star, class of 2003) -Lillix (big stars, class of 2003) -Brooke Adams (16-year-old singer/songwriter! Michael Jackson said she has talent touched by God!) -Kym Marsh (rockin', Top 40 UK artist) -Rose Falcon (daughter of Billy Falcon, had a #1 Radio Disney smash, holds guitar in press photos) -Delta Goodrem (she is piano rock) -Lighthouse Girl -- some Australian chick that sings that song about "The Lighthouse" and she's from a reality TV show, I forgot her name so let's call her Lighthouse Girl. -Hilary Duff - (The girl can rock!)
That's all I can think of at the moment.

That is who I'm talking about. Yes, she did sell more than Pink, but you got my point that most people wrote off that person and many thought she was done for good, which she obviously wasn't. You all are right that Pink needs a strong single to pick up sales.

I think Pink's new album is in trouble. The first single was a flop, second single I just cant see doing much better. And after that.... Plus I honestly think the music is subpar. I was surprised at how little the music appealed to me and how much I disliked the new album. Mizzundastood was one of my favorite albums of the past two years...so Im not just dissing on her. I think she can make good music, catchy music.

I think Britney, Christina, and BeyoncΓ© are doing so well because they are very well known and they have pop-friendly songs. Not nessacarily because is sex sells again. Michelle Branch recently spent five weeks at #4 and that was one of the most rock songs released by these girls. As for "Breathe," no one can be sure exactly where this song will go. I just think the song was released at the wrong time, now they are so mmany songs with huge bullets just climbing the charts!
As for Nelly Furtado, I was hoping she would do well again, but I wasn't really expecting it.

"Are You Happy Now" was a hit single, but "Hotel Paper" hasn't even gone platinum yet if i'm correct! Her album debut in the top 10 but then quicky fell to the bottom of the charts.
As for pink, i just want to tell you that i am not dissing her at all. I never really liked Pink until she came out with her 2nd album and she became one of my favorite artists, if not my favorite artist at that time (when Christina was on her long hiatus) and her album was the best of 2001 in my opinion. By the time "Feel Good Time" came out i began losing interest in her and "Trouble" was the final nail in the coffin for me, now i am not even considering picking up her album. I probably would've picked it up but there are so many better artists out there like Britney who's album i will be picking up!

To be percise it debuted in the top two, and #2 is a much greater accomplishment than #10.

I was surprised Michelle dropped like a rock. A hit single and already one album to establish a fanbase that was sucessful... I think she will still sell steady for awhile, but I dont think it will be as successful as TSR And I liked Feel Good Time **blushes** Trouble is just awful though. Thats one of my what were they thinking releasing that singles
