When you watch a video to a song you don't really like, but the video is great, does that sometimes change how you think of the song? Likewise, if the video for a song you like turns out to be not so good/annoying/offensive, would it tend to turn your opinion of the song more toward the negative side? This sort of thing has happened to me, and I don't really know what to make of it. A couple of weeks ago, I first listened to Incubus's new song "Megalomaniac". I liked the song immediately, but then I watched the video for it (located here). Artistically, the video is excellent, but I didn't like how they portrayed George W. Bush (using a look-alike figure of him) as the "megalomaniac" (and let's keep discussions of Bush out of this topic, just accept the notion that I disagree with Incubus' opinion on him). But that's not even the biggest problem. Near the end of the video, they show a man holding up a black book with the following words: Obviously, this is going to be offensive towards most people who are Christians, me included. Now, I can't think of the song the same way. I know nothing in the song has changed since I first listened to it, but other factors have definitely influenced it. I told my brother about the video, and he said, "Well... the song's still good." I sort of had to agree with him on that. Has something like this happened to other people before? If so, how have you handled it?

I usually think of music videos separate from from the song unless they're both as good, or as bad. I can't really think of an example right now, but the most a video could do is to spark more interest on the song itself if I like it. That's about it.

I think the bridge of "It's My Life" is good music to run somebody over in the video.

Videos never influence what I think of a song and they shouldn't!

I adore Incubus' video as well. lol!
Videos can sometimes make me like the song a little more but other than that, no.

I always envision the video of a song when I'm listening to it.
If it doesn't have a video, then I just picture the artist in my head.

Videos usually only have a positive reaction from me. While I liked "Megalomoaniac" before viewing the video clip, I really applaud Incubus for using their artistic freedom.

A video may not get me to like/dislike a song more, but it can change my opinion of an artist.
I never really liked the song to begin with, and think that Incubus has always been pretty overrated. As for this video, while I still dislike the song, I now dislike the band as individuals. Before, I had no opinion of them.
This same thing happened with Christina Aguilera. After seeing the "Dirrty" and "Beautiful" videos, I really disliked her personally. Even though I liked "Fighter" as a song, I still disliked her as a person.

Videos almost always make me like a song more. The best example I can think of is "Stacy's Mom." I liked the song before the video, but loved it after. And if I see a video that I dislike and it's for a song I like, I make it a point to not watch that video.

I wasn't interested in 'Dirrty' until I saw the video and I viewed the song in a whole new light! :)

Videos are always meant to be enhancers to the song. That's why I will hate a song and then watch a video and all of the sudden like a song because of it. I'll say that it doesn't happen all that often, but it can.
For the most part though the video shouldn't influence a song.

Videos never influence what I think of a song and they shouldn't! Well if everyone thought that way, MTV2, VH1 Soul etc. wouldn't exist. Eminem's "Without Me" video was the one that got me to really start liking him. The song jumped 21-10 (I think) on my personal chart after watching the video. Prior to that, I thought he had a few decent songs like "Stan" and that's about it. Now I'm a big fan. Hasn't happened in the reverse direction tho.

Videos can help me to like a song. It shapes what I think when I listen to the song and if I really really am entertained by it and understand it then I tend to really get into the song. I judge a single by how it sounds and how it looks. If I am on the edge about some song then a video just pushes my opinion of the song in one direction or the other.

It's very rare for a video to actually make me think less of a song I like. It's almost always either improves my opinion or just doesn't change it.
A good example of a great song with a bad video is "Closure" by Chevelle. This is possibly better than their first two singles in my opinion. And given the videos for those two singles, I was expecting something really good for this one. Instead it's just some footage of a concert combined with some "on the road" footage. I was so disappointed. I figure it's to promote their live CD, but the song doesn't even appear there! What burns me even more is that given the opportunity, I could probably make a really awesome video for it. (although it'd probably be really dark and depressing) But it doesn't change the fact that it's a great song for me at all.

There's something about Beyonce's videos. They make the songs more colourful and interesting. (I'm serious, get your minds out of the gutter)

I tell ya...I don't get to watch videos very often, but I used to hate the song "Still Waiting" by Sum 41. Then about three months ago I saw that video and that guy from Island Records, and "Green Day 75", and I'll say right now that I like the song more than I ever enjoyed "Fat Lip", which was a high B-range song. Everything else gets a fairly low mark.
