I listened to the Counting Crows' August and Everything After last night for the first time. I remember a few years back that so many critics said that they and Matchbox 20 sounded alike. Sorta hear a resemblence to YOSLY (1st album)--maybe it's the gruff vocals. Rob Thomas' voice has evolved to a much better tone the last two albums, IMO. I think MB20's songs and production are better though.
I'm curious about other artists who always seem to get compared to each other by the critics. Any that come to mind? Do you agree with the comparison?

I listened to the Counting Crows' August and Everything After last night for the first time. I remember a few years back that so many critics said that they and Matchbox 20 sounded alike. Sorta hear a resemblence to YOSLY (1st album)--maybe it's the gruff vocals. Rob Thomas' voice has evolved to a much better tone the last two albums, IMO. I think MB20's songs and production are better though. I'm curious about other artists who always seem to get compared to each other by the critics. Any that come to mind? Do you agree with the comparison? Well Counting Crows became popular before matchbox twenty. Counting Crows made their biggest impact in 1994 while matchbox twenty began impacting late 1996. Actually, I've heard far more often a Hootie And The Blowfish and matchbox twenty comparison. Personally, I am beyond sickened of it (critics have panned Hootie since the very beginning) and thus backstabbed matchbox twenty review-wise. Also they get compared to Foreigner a lot. I think Rob Thomas has inspirations from many different artists. In his old stuff I agree it had some faint Hootie sound resemblances, but once Mad Season came around, their sound is far more diverse with the production. Then on More Than You Think You Are there's a whole mix of sounds. Songs like "Feel" sound more like grunge rock (it was mixed by the System Of A Down producer) while "Bright Lights" has a mix of Elton John, Counting Crows and Pearl Jam, and then "All I Need" like Sister Hazel, "Hand Me Down" in the vein of urban jazz, etc. Word has it on Rob Thomas' debut solo album there'll be more of a country sound overall, so once again we see various comparisons. *****Other Comparisons I Hear Often***** Jason Mraz & Don McLean (other than their voices I don't quite see the resemblance) Pearl Jam & Nirvana (absolutely disagree with this one. Pearl Jam sounds nothing like Nirvana, in my opinion. Pearl Jam to me is compared more to R.E.M, and, in their more recent years, Neil Young) Incubus & Hoobastank: (I can agree that Hoobastank's debut album sounded a lot like Incubus material, only Hoobastank is far more mainstream than Incubus) U2 & Disturbed (cannot understand this comparison at all. It is said quite so often but aside from the fact they both write songs of spiritual nature, their styles of rock are TOO different. U2 is more adult-alternative oriented (though Alternative friendly also) and Disturbed is for hard-core metal fans borderline Alternative. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The first post was about Matchbox 20. I always felt they’re compared with the Goo Goo Dolls a lot.

Jody Watley, Vanessa Williams, Karyn White, Pebbles, and Janet were compared a lot to each other back in the day. Now the only thing that has changed is not so much with Janet.
Patti and Aretha
Diana and Donna
Paula and Janet

I also forgot to mention Selena Quintanilla and Aaliyah, and sometimes also with Left Eye.
People also compare Aaliyah to Brandy and Monica.
